I hear you, Jon. I am 56, and started training Judo 3 months ago, and I still struggle, particularly with cardio, flexibility, muscle soreness and arthritis. And those things can affect the amount I train each week, and - more important to me - my motivation, but I am trying to be disciplined, rather than being concerned about motivation. I am addicted.

Jesus Cristo Very true. I hadn’t wrestled in 40 years, but that mentality, experience and attitude is hardwired in my brain. As soon as I was on the mat, I felt at home. But after a while (a couple years) I realized I had to stop being a wrestler, and become a “jiujitsero” - I’m still working on that.
Every adult brings a lifetime of experience with them to the mat. For me, the most interesting thing is to see how the heat and flames of jiujitsu forges those experiences into something new and beautiful.

I started BJJ at 66 years old, under Professor Mario Yokoyama , who was awarded his black-belt by the late Ryan Gracie. I am now 69(in a few days). At my age you have no choice but to leave your ego at the door, and you have to be determined, for one does not have the strength and stamina of a man or woman in their 20's.The effort and strain, along with getting used to being sore all the time, is worth it - "if it does not challenge you, it does not change you".

I notice around 4:35 her right arm is up and over her body, she just kind of pulled it out to give him room to flatten out and choke, if she left it there would it of protected her and prevented the choke, or would it then become something like an arm in choke? ty

I am the Moroccan Taekwondo champion in the years 1986 1987 1989 and I stopped training for 27 years. I have two sons, the big one is 13 years old and the little one is 6 years old. When I take them to the Taekwondo hall, I feel nostalgic to play the game again. I teach them how to play like champions and they are distinguished. The little one looks a lot like me, he doesn’t He is afraid to play with someone who is older than him and plays with manliness, unlike the old man. He is an artist in his game, but he is very afraid. This is what prompts me to return to practice Taekwondo in order to stand by my children

I'm 22 years old and I've been doing bjj for two years and I'm a 3 stripe white belt. It's been a dream of mine since i was a child to become a champion of some sort but my parents would never let me take martial arts because they were afraid I'd be too violent. Right when I got out of highschool and got a job all my friends went to college and I looked for the best local bjj/muay thai studio locally, where I found the beautiful art of bjj and my journey began. I fell in love with it. Tonight, I kinda opened up to my professor about what he thought about what it takes to become a world champion by training full time (5 days a week drilling for 2 hours and rolling for 4 at the minimum.) and what he thinks it really takes and he told me that he thinks I'm too late... I'm too old. I couldn't help but want to tell him I'm going to try anyways and another fellow black belt who's been training under jean jacques machado since he was 15 chimed in and he also thinks I'm too old. I just talked to my fiance about what she though and she said "I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you might be too old babe."
I just saw this video and I cried.
It's always been a dream of mine and I dont know what to do. I want to become like gordan ryan, Keenan Cornelius, buchecha, or marcello Garcia so bad. I want to become a legend like these guys and I know it's no easy task. But I'm crying right now because I feel like my dreams have been crushed and I don't know what to do.
I was told if I'm not winning worlds in 3 years I'm never going to be a champion.
If anyone could reach out to me and tell me what they honestly think, it would be helpful. Thank you for listening to my small story.

GratificationGaming you have to have a good support system. I would possibly find a new place to train with positive people who will push you to be the best you can be and not tell you that you are too old to do something. My coach is living proof that if you want to be a champion you at any age you can. I’m a 40 year old blue belt training when I can still pushing myself to be better.

Stick with it man my biggest regret is stopping. Im back at it now. I would have been a beast if i had stuck to it. My buddy who i use to whoop on is a brown belt now and ge is a beast. Its all about consistency. Dont worry about where you are at now and dont focus on how well you measure up against everyone. Im 28 now by the ways and i first started at exactly 22 which is where you are at. Thats why i replied. Dont be like me. Im still young.... I am getting at it but i wasted too many years

If you enjoy BJJ just continue doing it. Enjoy the journey and it doesn't matter so much as where you end up. Maybe with time you will discover this "philosopy" could and should applies to everything in life... coming from a 46 year-old one-stripe white-belt who does not get to train more that 4 times a month... and that is if I'm lucky.

    • @dhaggard79

Train as hard as you can as often as you can. Get in to some local competitions and see how you fare. Start the journey and see where it takes you. Look back one day wherever you are and tell yourself that you gave it your all.

Go for it, but don't get too hung up on it. There is so much more out there than sport competition. Getting older is something else to learn about and adapt to, and overcoming that challenge has it's own reward.
