    Don’t change a thing, Scott. I love the ad hoc “hey, I find this interesting .... let me share what I’m thinking”. Your “style” is precisely what makes it great and genuine. It is as if we are having a stream of conscientiousness interaction. Personal interaction, without being personal. Stay true to yourself and don’t shine it all up.

    I really have to emphasize the comment of Arnold! I have a PhD in physics and have been working now in science education for quite some time and I have to say, your „amateur“ content is often times more correct and more educational than some of the content of science channels that are supposedly doing this more „professionally“. I think the 99% on the raptor came from “99% combustion efficiency” as in 99% of the propellant burning up inside the engine

    • @otheraccount5252
      @otheraccount5252 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      that is, 99% of the chemical energy turns into thrust times Isp

    • @christiansteinert6189
      @christiansteinert6189 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@otheraccount5252 the 99% is just related to the chemical reaction. Musk said that because it's a hot gas-gas interaction he expects that 98-99% of the fuel and oxidizer molecules will react with each other. This will then of course be converted into heat which in turn results in pressure. But the question how much of that pressure gets converted into thrust is a different point.
      Isp is the result of everything taken together: a) how complete is the combustion b) how much chemical energy is released from the reaction between the respective fuel and oxidizer c) how well is the pressure from the combustion chamber converted into thrust as the exhaust flows through the nozzle d) how light are the molecules of the combustion product ... and probably more plays a role
      That the combustion is 99% complete will not mean that 99% of the released chemical energy will be converted into thrust.

    scott your raw authenticity is what makes your channel exceptional. we know your background and we know you're not reading from a script unlike some other youtubers (*cough**simonwhistler**cough**) so your knowledge is inherently more trustworthy and, imo, has a layman's charm that makes the esoteric knowledge you dispense a million times more digestible.

    I like the last answer, the way it is now is perfect! You call your graphics scrappy/ugly, I call it basic and functional :)
    It gets the job done and thats the important part for graphics
    Also, taking time to ansewer properly is important Id say.

    Personally I love the way you find "different" topics that "classier" presenters wouldn't bother with, and then you explain those topics in clear and concise details in an interesting way that makes the science behind the topic easy to understand.

      Its known to be 25 small engines combining to provide the delta-v of a single raptor divided by 6 (lower gravity), but also angled to loose about a third of the delta-v. Thus each is about 1% raptor thrust (~20 kN) and running on methalox. So either a new SpaceX engine, an old experimental engine that SpaceX set aside, or maybe some "small" methalox engines from another NASA supplier.
      Wikipedia suggests these would be "high-thrust methox RCS thrusters" on a list of SpaceX engines. Fitting a 20kN vacuum engine in about 1m of surface shouldn't be too difficult for an experienced rocket designer.

    Your style of not having fancy graphics makes you explain things how you see them in your head and and that gives us a chance to understand your thoughts.. and if you do your 'job' very well you break it down far enough for the laymen to get you.
    That's your secret sauce and its Invaluable.
    Keep it up.

That's what people love about them. Shoutout to all those kinda science and education channels!! You, Cody's lab, ElectroBOOM, explosions and fire, Pecos Hank, Tom Scott, Crime pays but Botany doesn't, Periodic Videos, the slowmoguys and probably many many more. They're all awesome.

    The device used to determine what a planet is made of is called a spectroscope. It's kind of like an advanced prism. When the light from a planet is isolated, it can be run through a spectroscope and produces a rainbow colored rectangle. When one examines this grid, very thin black lines can be seen spaced at certain intervals among the colors. These black lines correspond with different elements present in the light reflected from the atmosphere. -A 29 year middle grades science teacher, retired =)
