I'm really surprised its taken me this long to cover Last Bronx. An excellent 3D fighter from Sega.
Time Code
00:21 - Arcade
02:55 - Saturn
05:57 - Windows '98
08:05 - PlayStation 2
09:40 - All versions running side by side
Enjoy!
All characters from this game are so cool, this game deserves to be better known and to have more fan art.
I love Last Bronx. It's one of my favorite 3D fighters, second to Power Stone. It just always felt really crisp, and has a very '90s time capsule flavor to it. Just an ace game all around.
Last year I played the Saturn version for the first time and I was really impressed by it's graphics. Of course the gameplay is also pretty good. :D
Yeah, AM3 did a very good job with the port.
The Saturn intro is so pure 90s anime, I love it!
What is it that makes Model 2 games so charming? The graphics perhaps.
a blistering 60fps
@@DragonSlayerKyo Ahem, Virtua Cop was 30fps.
@@CaptainNight I'm talking about in general. a majority of Model 2 games were 60.
@@DragonSlayerKyo I know, I'm just stating that one game was running 30FPS on the same Model 2 Hardware.
Presentation, personality and sound.
I recently got Last Bronx for the Saturn and it's pretty cool! It's definitely the best 3D weapons based fighter on the system! I thought I was gonna get totally destroyed my first time through, but I was able to beat the game in less than 20 minutes my first time. I can see myself playing this one often and getting better! Maybe i'll stick that Last Bronx sticker that came with it on my Saturn someday 😉
You;re right Mark. Amazing how life works in mysterious ways.. Interestingly My father had no problems with Jack Tramiel. However he use to see him when he use to get angry. And boy, he said that Jack use to frighten EVERYBODY!
My father met up with him again when he was 29-30 during a seminar in NYC at the time. He remembered his face because he said that face of his was hard to forget. 8^) After he told him about how he repaired his Aunt's typewriter in his shop i n the Bronx, they became friends and talked a while at the seminar. He asked if he would like to invest in future projects in Commodore and become a stockholder once it was available on the market....So my father said yes, and the rest is history as they say. 8^)
Anthony..
Excellent story.
Hahaha. As a man born and raised in the Bronx, NY Mark, I can relate to this game of fighting bro. 8^)
Anthony..
Lol, I find it really funny they call it last bronx but the whole game is set in Tokyo 😂
I own the Japanese sega Saturn version and I’m damn well impressed it was the closest sega model 2 arcade to Saturn port sega had ever done on the Saturn, even though the backgrounds on the Saturn version were not fully 3-D like retro core said they had a trick up their sleeve to make them look exactly like the 3-D arcade Sega model 2 backgrounds in a way, and the graphics were the closest then any other port out there of last Bronx
I think Fighting Vipers is also pretty well done because of the lighting that game features.
Retro Core right that’s amazing as well lol, just think though retro if sega was able to make the Saturn fully capable of achieving model 2 arcade perfection on its system, lol that would hands down make Saturn my all time favorite system, I love though how hey had a perfect mindset of trying to make the model 2 on the Saturn arcade perfect in the first place when developing the Saturn, but just falling short of there goal, but seeing as most of the ports were kinda terrible they still were trying to show us what model 2 could have looked like on the Saturn in a way
So wait is the PS2 port on the Sega Ages Arcade perfect ? I’m still confused on that retro
Nope, the Sega Ages port is not arcade perfect by a long shot but it is a very good port.
By the way, the Saturn is my all time favourite console. Second would be the SFC then X360, MD and Dreamcast. Yep, sadly the Dreamcast isn't that high up but it still beats the PS2 :p
It's a fun game, I remember playing the Windows version YEARS ago and thinking it was a pretty cool concept, also glad it's in my Saturn collection as well. One thing that always bugged me about the Saturn version is that it looks interlaced, always throws my eyes off.
Yeah, the Saturn version is interlaced which can look messy but I guess that was the payoff for keeping it 60fps.
I own the PS2 version (Along with the JP Saturn ver) and while it's not super important, the PS2 version has a hidden menu where you can turn on some goofy stuff, like big heads or weapons. As well as the ability to play as the hidden metal versions of characters, used in a bonus stage of the arcade version (I think it was to show off the Model 2's gouraud shading capabilities)
the saturn port also has these features
That's right. The Saturn also has some of these features such as joke weapons and an art gallery
Never heard of this game before, but the music sounds awesome
If you're a fan of 3D fighters, pick it up!
This was one of the four games I had on Saturn so I played it to death. I really miss this one
It was a very good fighter for te Saturn. Very different than the AM2 games that dominated the system.
All Model2 arcade ports (excluding Daytona USA),are much more enjoyable on Saturn for me,they have that feel that you want to own and play them now.
I'd say even Daytona is enjoyable. Plays just like the arcade. Looks like crap mind you.
If they had a few more months, the low res visuals probably would have gotten a massive boost.
Oh man I LOVE the Saturn's intro song. Nostalgia levels out of control, when it first popped out in your video. :)
Also, with all due respect to Wiki people, a bit of a LOL at 'it's emulated on the PS2'. It's one of those super accurate ports by M2, and one of the best entries in the SEGA Ages series on the PS2. As you rightfully said, it's the best way to play the game on a console. ^_-
I lived the Saturn and PC intro music back in the day. I was actually quite surprised to see the PC version have Engine subtitles. I've never seen that before as I've only ever played the Japanese version. I wonder if the PAL and US Saturn releases are subtitled?
Retro Core It seems so, Mark. A couple of videos - from the western version of LB for the Saturn - I found here on YT, do indeed show subs, like the PC port.
Such a fun game as I remembered.
It sure is. It can be quite tough too. I hadn't played it in years so I kind of struggled with making this video. I'd forgotten all the timings to preform combos.
I do love the intro, one of the best. PS2 emulated Sega Rally pretty well, maybe they need to know what to scale down from the raw material to have an good emulation going. (Textures for example). I only heard of that SR port from an older BotP, so huge thank you btw, now I have Daytona (Xbox 360) and SR Arcade Style at home.
Sega Rally and Daytona are both 2 of the best arcade driving games ever made.
I was first introduced to this game soon after it was released in the US for the Sega Saturn. To this day still one of my favorite Saturn games. These days though, I own the Japanese import (as well as the Win 98 version). Still very playable and fun.
I think it's a great game too. It's just a shame about the sudden difficulty spike it has. The first 3 or 4 rounds are easy then all of a sudden its rock hard.

@@RetroCore Oh yeah, especially the guy near the end with the gun.
Love the Saturn version. I had it, and for me, is the best 3D fighting game for the system. Amazing intro!
That it was. I really liked how the 3D arenas were presented on the Saturn. At times you could be fooled in to thinking they are 3D.
And speaking of the Bronx Mark.... Remember I had a story to tell you about Jack Tramiel? Well here it is bro..
Back when my father was growing up in the Bronx, his Aunt's typewriter needed maintenance and repair work done on her machine. So my father tagged along that day to pick it up after the work was done on it. And guess who did it? Jack Tramiel himself when he had his shop in the Bronx. He was 9 years old at the time and would would meet him years later and became friends in business thanks to that little shop he had.
Jack Tramiel did become friends with my father because he always enjoyed his early years in the industry meeting those that were part of his early success. My father was there on the unveiling of all of the Commodore computers when Tramiel was in charged and continued on with him at Atari.
Anthony..
Wow, that is so cool. To meet a legendary figure before they are known. I wonder if your father or Jack knew what the future would hold.
WHAAAAAAAAT im lit i love this game time to get some chocalate dig in and watch👍 thanks for the vid.
amazing video mate ,,,,plz keepup it ,,,cheers
Thanks, Josph OK.
This game was great shame there never was a sequel
I agree with you. Being a PS1 fan and Last Bronx is one my favourites 3D fighting of all time.
Aww, 90 action anime. .
I miss those ...
This reminded me of fighting vipers
Last Bronx is still looking good even today. Thumbs up to you Mark and my suggestion for the next 'Battle of Ports' is... Tenchi o Kurau 2 Sekiheki no Tatakai... a.k.a Warriors of Fate.
Interesting. I'm not sure how many ports that game has but I'll take a look. I did cover the original by the way th-cam.com/video/doB8S6oxilc/w-d-xo.html
I think the PC got so many Saturn ports, because Sega saw the writing on the wall, as far as the Saturn was concerned.
Yeah cause Bernie Stolar hated the Saturn. If you were a Sega fan in the late 90's you were better off getting the PC ports.
This game was dope
I still have copy for the sega saturn in great condition.
Had this on the Saturn, nice gameplay, maybe Sega's answer to Soul Edge at the time.
It was actually developed around the same time as Soul Edge / Blade. That was the other fighting games that used motion capture for its weapon based Fighters.
I like the anime intro and song in the Saturn and PC version. Have you ever seen the 1990's anime TV series adaption of Virtua Fighter?
Yes, I saw it way back in 1998 or around that date. It was still shown on TV when I moved to Japan.
I own Virtua Fighter 2 and Last Bronx for the PC. Virtua Fighter is my favourite fighting game and got a D3D-Patch, which I missed for Last Bronx
I think, even without a patch Last Bronx on the PC looks pretty good.
Omg. Is that Koda kumi in the Saturn intro?
I don't think so. This game was made in 1997 so Koda Kumi would have been 15 or there abouts.

¡gracias!
I wish the PS2 had the Sega Saturn extras...ah well. Does the Window 98 run well on modern computers?
Yeah, you can play the PC version on modern PC 's but make sure you use compatability mode for Windows 98. Also star the game then press F4 to bring up the options. You must switch off the auto frame option otherwise the game runs way too fast. Also change the image settings to 480p 16bit colour.
Oh, and the game will crash if you let the demo run so as soon as you see the title screen hit that start button.
Last Bronx is a great game, weapons fighting done right, It does copy VF to some extent but thats something that can be leveled at many fighters at the time.
The PC version was good, albeit it had no 3D acceleration which is why the game still looks rougher than the arcade. Had the game used Direct3D or Glide, you could have gotten something even closer to the arcade.
Generally I stick with the Saturn version , it plays and looks great, especially with the Saturn controller.
Wow, Last Bronx looks pretty interesting. At first glance it looks like a Soul Calibur( well, Soul Edge at the time) clone, but I really want to give it a shot.
I'm pretty sure this came out just before soul edge.
Ótimo jogo
I wish we got a follow-up to this. But sadly Sega AM3 totally forgot about. =\
each of the ports are quite nice in their own respects. The PS 2 Ages 2500(that was the series name, I believe?) was quite the step up from the lackluster VF 2 release.
It maybe due to the AM teams being split up not long after this was released. They became teams such as Overworks, United Artists and err.... Bugger, I can't recall the names now.
On the subject of resolution, I would prefer if they had used some sort of middle ground res. The Saturn can do a ton of different resolutions and combinations according to documents.
even though the flicker is not too noticeable on a standard 480i set, the times you can see it are during victory cuts- and it's a little distracting. at least to my eyes.
Yeah, that's due to the interlacing method they had used on the game. Virtual Fighter 2 and Fighting Vipers both run in progressive scan mode which looks much nicer.
It looks fun. Too bad I couldn't find the rom :(.
lastbrnx and lastbrnxj are the file names should make life easier to find them.
Is there anyway to fix the interlacing in Post Mark?
Normally, yes but in this case I don't think it's possible because the video is captured in progressive format. The Saturn in this game's case is outputting an interlaced image but because the capture is progressive I don't think normal de-interlacing options will work.
The Windows version had a network mode, as in LAN support? Why would you need it on 2 monitors if you're sitting in the same room?
It was over the net do you could play with someone in another area.
Are you emulating your Saturn footage? There seems to be a lot of interference I don't see when I play the same games on my hardware. It looks like you're using Yabause.
Nope, I NEVER emulate Saturn. It's the only console I always use real hardware for because I own a complete Japanese Saturn collection.
Omg the Saturn port 🤤 I drool every time, sometimes I think I’m actually playing the sega model 2 arcade port hehe 😜 cuz the Japanese sega Saturn port was that good, like they were able to almost match the graphics arcade perfectly in a way if only the Saturn had a little bit more power I believe then it could have achieved arcade perfect sega model 2 graphics lol just imagine last Bronx on the Saturn fully arcade perfect XD now that would be an exciting trip
Last Brox on the Saturn is impressive for the console.
Retro Core Hey Retro core, I need your help, I’ve been trying for years ever since the PS4 came out, to contact Sega the company, to bring an arcade perfect collection of sega model 3 arcade games to a physical retail box copy with disc, I’ve even written them letters saying how badly I want this and how I’m there biggest fanboy for years lol since the 90s, could you help me get the word out to Sega to try and get there attention :)
Retro Core I’ve even made my only little fun cute fan made trailer of what it would like if a collection did come to the PS4 it would help if you shared this video with anyone and everyone you know as well to help get the word out also :)

As the battle was at it's peek between Sony and Sega when this game was released, I only wonder if a PS1 version was ever released, would it be as inferior as all the other ones for third party games that were released for both machines?
I would imagine it would have been. Sega Model 2 games used a lot of floor plains which the PlayStation would have needed to draw in polygons while the Saturn can very easily use 1 endless bitmap.
How did you made the video working on pc version ? The game crash every time one is launching in game.
I used an old PC running XP.
I don't know if i have a poor eyesight or not but the saturn wins again in my opinion and it looks a little bit like the model 2 arcade plus that anime intro dude
I can understand you. The Saturn looks inferior to the Arcade but the way it is presented is pretty impressive for the console.
They really messed up the sky on the pc version. It's kind of distracting.
Do you mean the way it slides across? I think what they did is keep the sky from the basic graphics mode. It looks okay in basic mode but does kind of look strange in high graphics mode.
What happened to Mr. Do, Mark?
Turns out I had already done Mr. DO quite a while back. I had forgotten all about it. Here's the link th-cam.com/video/PfKT-Rt8sEQ/w-d-xo.html
I am more surprise there no PS1 port but again Virtua Fighter also share same fate which eventually got port when PS2 come out, I think back in the day Sega really trying hard to make their console sell well.
PS1 was competing with Saturn back then. In the PS2 days Sega left the console business
But when PS2 come out Sega still have Dreamcast.
Dreamcast support ended during PS2's life cycle. After that happened, Sega ported titles to PS2
Yep, this is right. Such a sad time. I would have loved the better Sega Ages titles to have been on the Dreamcast.
They would have ended up like Atari corp. Long gone and a distant memory. They were bleeding money. It was the best thing they could have done to stay in business.
Two consecutive videos where a Sega console isn't the best port? Is really Mark who is making these videos? 🤔😁
The Arcade version is wonderful, these graphics on 96? Congratulations for Sega 👏👏👏
Hehe, people or should I say Sony fanboys think I'm a Sega fanboy and that I think everything on the Saturn is better. Not true at all. They just try upset when their mighty PlayStation isn't No. 1😁
I bought a massive stack of the Sega Ages games for the PS2 in a job lot years ago, why did I have to get Sega Ages PS2 Golden Axe instead of this? All the ones you'd want to own cost an absolute fortune these days whilst I'd probably have to pay somebody to take Golden Axe.
Ah, most of the good ones including this were handled by M2. They're the kings of ports which is why they cost so much.
You couldn't pay me a million dollars to take golden axe of your hands 😁😁😂😂
None of them manage to capture the look of the arcade, though the Windows 98 version is remarkably close. The Saturn and PS2 versions both suffer from being interlaced and having overly dark colors compared to the Win 98/arcade, though the PS2 version wins in the gameplay department simply from having the most content available, even compared to the arcade. It's just a damn shame they couldn't get it looking a bit better.
The PS2 version can be played in progressive scan too at 480. The problem is (or at least on my set up) that the screen size ratio goes odd. It makes the image too narrow. I'm not sure why it does this as other games don't suffer in 480p mode like this
What about other versions? Oh wait...
NO DON'T PUT THIS ON THE R-ZONE!!!!!
Yeah that is weird. I'll have to find the game myself and get back to you on whether it's a problem with your display or just the game itself.
Retro Core I played the game myself and figured out why that is. 480p mode assumes you're playing on a widescreen TV, and makes the image narrower to compensate for the 16:9 screen. If your TV has a widescreen mode, make sure you have it enabled.
So sad this game never got a sequel 😢
Soul Edge destroyed any hope for Sega fans at that time 😅
Such a shame they didn't go the extra mile to add light sourcing to the PS2 port. 3D games without light sourcing look so bland and ugly.
Maybe they wanted to stay true to the Arcade game.
Yeah, would have been cool to have an extra mode for that. I guess light sourcing would have made the character models look too blocky, which is one of the reasons why many games from that era didn't use light sourcing since light shows sharp edges on ;ow polygon models (besides getting better performance)
Lack of light sourcing didn't bother me too much back in the day, but now it just looks so weird.
Fighting Vipers in the Arcade and Saturn uses light sourcing on certain stages. It actually looks pretty impressive too on the Saturn.
Yeah, Fighters Megamix also looks really good, probably my favorite 3D fighter on the Saturn (save for one stage where the shadows show a lot of banding due to using a low color palette and no dithering)
I guess the problem with Last Bronx is that it was designed without light sourcing in mind, so adding light sourcing meant tweaking the character models since things like knee, elbow, shoulder, waist, etc.. joints need gouraud shading to avoid clipping and smooth out the polygon edges and that also requires a fair bit of extra processing power. To be fair only late gen PS1 games like Tobal 2, Tekken 3, Bloody Roar 2 and DOA have fully gouraud shaded models. Most other games only used gouraud shading in certain areas like the legs.
Can’t tell if you’re British or Asian.
He's a British man that moved to Japan.

Haha, Japascouse. I like that.
