  • There is no typical day as a teacher and this is what makes the job exciting. I have been relief teaching for the last 2 years and honestly, I feel like it’s given me the skills I needed to feel confident into being a full-time classroom teacher.
Each day there will be light bulb moments and chaotic moments if you’re a relief teacher. I will share some of my learnings from the previous 2 years as a casual relief teacher at a Primary School level.

Thank you for the tips. I remember travelling to a new country to fill a teaching position and I had a 5 year old tell me that I should hurry up and return to my home country. I felt really bad. Something amazing happened, I became ill and had to travel for medical missing the final term and that same kid that told me what he did became one of my supporters during my illness. Children will surprise you definitely.

Hey Scott, your tips for casual days are super helpful! Would love to see a video on what you have in your casual bag, what your tips are on taking in with you.

Hi Anna, I do cover this in another one of my vids. To be honest I have stripped back what I have in my bag. Now I have; lined and blank paper, word search and a mindfulness colouring book, whiteboard markers, deck of cards and I use classroomscreen.com to organise my day if I have access to a computer/smartboard.

Your the best, thanks. Can you talk about lesson plans and being ready to teach any year group . How confident you need to be and how well you need to know what you are teaching?

I am ready in a few ways. In my bag I always have spare blank and lined paper. If you can talk to the teacher in the next room about the class. They are always a good point of contact and information. This may also help with the confidence question: myjobisateacher.blogspot.com/2022/11/bullet-points-on-how-to-have-great-day.html?m=1

    Hi Scott,
Congratulation on your full time teaching job. I am curious and forgive me if you are not comfortable answering this but how much roughly did you earn a year as a CRT. I am full time looking to go part time or casual. Thanks :)

Should the school give you the credentials to log onto the smart board? I was teaching when we used chalk!

They should yes. There will either be a computer in each room or you'd ask for a school laptop. Thanks for the question :)
