Agree with the reviewer, i have both d610 and d700, low light AF in d600/d610 is crap, D700 performs way way way waaaayyy better in dark situation compared to d610. For newbie and tech-geek guys, yes, d700 is outdated, not for pro (or at least people who really know how to take a good picture).
I have a D800 but i also still keep my D700. I still love my D700, its a camera that nikon wont make anymore. FX Sensor? 12MP? 8FPS? Weather-sealed body? It's almost like having a D3 for a fraction of the price.
Totally agree with MirrorlessReviews. EPurpl3 have you used the two camera side by side in "magic hour" landscape shooting? The D600 (and the D7000) can be very frustrating! The best way is to do all focusing in live view and force the D600/D7000 type AF to use phase detection. OK if you are using a tripod; not so good if you want to hand hold or use view finder!
Thank you for this. I am trying to make this decision, between the D600/D700 and I have not found any comparisons between them on line. Wish they would have used the D600 used the physical body of the D700 ...that would have solved all my problems
Having used all three, D700's (and D800's) AF is significantly better in low light. D800's 36MP resolution makes it fit another category of applications, that's why D600 is compared against D700.
lol i think YOU should get a D700 ^^ and try the awesomness of the 51 focus points AND the most customizable camera EVER (by pressing the info button you can access to all of your 4 programs) not only U1 & U2
I have several D700's (use for weddings, events and family photo sessions), and a D610 (use for real estate). No comparison in AF ability of D700 between these cams - the D610 is a joke. D700 files produce better skin tones as well. For architecture the D610 is awesome using U1 for interior work settings and U2 for exterior. The shadow detail is great as well. D610 is great for macro work as well (lighter on tripod + more ability to crop). Both great cams for different reasons. No way I would ever shoot a wedding with a D610 though - it can't focus during dim ceremonies or during the dancing.
dxo reviews rates the d600 a better performer at high iso than the d700, but if you are saying the AF isn't as good as the d700, i guess manual focus is needed to achieve best night shots.
This, a thousand times this I'm really struggling to make up my mind. If they would only make the D600 in the body of de D700, oh god it would be a god tier camera.. Though I'm leaning more towards the D700 atm
I don't know why there is idea that a photographer should be embarrassed about the noise his/her shutter in making. Its not like they are farting with every press of the shutter button. The D700 shutter sound is a masculine affair; sounding like someone chopping wood. Its not the size of your lens that counts, it's how much noise you make YEAHRR.
If you are an event photographer/local gig photographer then it is an issue, I recently shot a wedding where the meal and speeches were done in an entirely candle lit room and both my D7000 and D600 I hired hunted for focus a lot
I also agree that thats no reason to upgrade to d600 if you already have a d700. D700 is also good (i used one at work in studio) but if you want to buy a brand new camera than there is no reason to buy a d700
At least i have to agree with this, D700 has a better build because has metal on all sides. So it tougher, if you drop it will not break for sure. But is also smarter? D700 1074 g, D600 760 g. And as you know from this review D700 is also bigger so D600 is easier to carry around but only has metal on top and on the front side (lcd side) but also can break if you drop it on the lens side... or it will break the lens? I wish someone would make a review about that, we will not know until than :D.
Yes D700 is built tougher, but don't buy into this, it won't break if it's dropped. It all depends on how it lands. I've heard of people dropping a D700 & it not surviving due to how it landed
the 700 focus is better in dark situations and it has more focus points. however, overal image quality the 600 is better -on par with a d800. if you already own a 700, better to upgrade to a 800.
video mode aside, the d700 leaves the d600 into dust. there is really no fx upgrade from the d3 except the d3s/d3x, D700, d4 finally the d4s, no wonder these are the only fx cameras made in japan (well the d800 was made in japan but that's a different category knowing it's insane megapix) not even the d810 is japan made. nikon reserves pro & its best cameras to be made in japan. this is more evident in their lens lineup i.e. 24-70, 14-24, 70-200. picture quality wise, d700 is waaaaaaaaaay too better than this d600.
Castiel Diallo Are you smoking crack? The D700 destroys the D600/D610 in terms of image quality and color depth. I know so because I OWN both the d700 and D610 and done some tests. I also have a D7200 and D5300. None of these cameras beats the D700 in image quality and it's built like a tank whereas the D610 is cheap built with lots of plastic.
im waiting for nikon to give me the rest of the focus points missing in my D610 haha, it's really a shitty small box in the middle. D700 has a really great viewfinder coverage :)
CastrejonHDTV Err , no it doesn’t . Dynamic range, resolution and colour depth all go to the D610( check DXO mark for SNR, ISO and colour depth results , search D610 vs D700 measurements) I’m not bias to either D610/D700 , I also own both bodies. After my own testing of both, it’s conclusion of DXO results. In favour of D700 (I’m on my 3rd now) build , controls (although this is subjective) and handling goes to D700 and auto focus. Also the Jpeg output and colours on D700 are brilliant for an older camera. D700 has crappy live view (I wouldn’t entertain it) , the expeed professor is much slower than D610 (expeed 3) try transferring 500+ images from USB from D700, it takes a lifetime. D610 much, much quicker. 1 card slot, etc etc. But the D700 is a special camera in its own right. The images are beautiful from that 12mp FF sensor, and a lot Is due to the less demand on optics(Lens) The newer breed cameras are much more demanding with such high MP count. They need the best of the best glass..... simple. But when they have that, the D700, or all of the older Nikon’s won’t get close. The image details , DR is simply stunning. Both the D700’s, D610/D750 , D800s etc are all amazing cameras. The true replacement of the D700 was the D800. Keep shooting 👍 Z
Totally agree with you, he's a poor guy who can afford the D600 and not a D700 so he thinks his camera is the best ^^ He has to be 12 or something. He cannot understand the awesomeness of the D700
my words exactly!!! :)) The dude has no idea about photography..... just repeats stuff he saw in some stupid "pro" forums D700 is an amazing camera... buying one this year for the travel/landscape photography
Well, d700 12 mp, d600 24 and d800 36mp. There is a 12 mp difference between d600 and d700 and 12mp between d600 and d800 but d700 is from 2008 but both d600 and d800 from 2012 so i think that d600 and d800 should be in the same category because they both have newer (and better) technologies.
The review is fine. His finding have been confirmed on digital rev and other sites. Newer doesn't mean better. The d700 shows better ISO performance on dpr as well. The d600 has crappy low light AF. The d600 AF is the same speed as the d7000 , no where near the class of the d700. Sorry , but think before you say something. The reviewer has both cameras. I think he knows what he is talking about. Totally outdated ? lol Go back to your cellphone camera.
Did you ever work with your camera? It is very important that the camera can focus in the dark, often happen to be photographed some club or party where are almost no lights.Inform your self before posting this kind of question.
iMercury989 My camera is a compact with no viewfinder. My view was very few pictures are taken in total darkness using auto focus .I may be wrong, as no expert here, but I just assumed it was some sort of selling point, like having a slightly bigger sensor, or more frames per second drive. You could say, "it goes up to eleven"!
Because the multi cam 4800 module struggles even if the light isn't that dark or if there is shade. It's the same system Nikon used for the D7000 with a slight tweak.
Hi, have you tried "photo SFX art" (google it)? There you can watch a nice free video explaining how to take impressive photos. This helped Matt to shoot photos which have a wow-effect while you look at them. I hope it will work for you as well.
yeah that's a big issue with Nikon , the D600 has great high ISO but shitty AF, while the D800 has great AF but its high ISO is not at all good in real bad light. I hope Nikon put the D600 sensor in the D800 body.
Hahahahaha, so you bought a D700 this year? congrats, is a good camera, even if is so old and outdated. Any way, lets get to the point, you cant call somebody stupid without any arguments and any prove and you cant say that a camera is better than the other just because you bought one and without any arguments and any REAL review to prove that. D700 is a decent camera and feels great in your hands and... well thats all. Good luck.
well, if you shoot at 200 iso and you don't need to print large formats, d700 is good, if you shoot over 640 iso and you need detail for large Printing, well, It's garbage. d600 is another world
snore half way through, why not put up more comparison photos of noise. urgh. also... notice how you don't like the effect of your AF kicking in... well.. why not turn it off then? it isn't like your point of focus is changing. Also notice that annoying flicker when ever you move your darker hands into the metering area... well.. considering your light source isn't changing... WHY not switch the camera to Manual mode... set the speed to what looks smooth, the aperture to the DoF you want and who cares about ISO GRAIN in a tutorial... really? we are comparing the two cameras you havn't showed any footage from... not yours.
Sorry, very bad review, d700 is totally outdated. Get a d800 if you want to compare the d600 with a camera of the same level. And, BTW, d600 autofocus is very good, you dont need better but the d700 has a lot of noise in the shadows so that is a real problem for low light photography. And d600 has U1 and U2 mode, by far you have a better control than a d700.
dont like the way you bad mouth the D600. I dont have either. but am looking to buy the D600 to compliment my D3/d300. bottom line for me, IQ is better than the D700..and D3. it has pretty much what I need but I will have too adjust. I already have a grip for it and extra batteries. for me, its MOSTLY about the iq so I will say to those considering this over the D700. if you need great IQ at high ISO, get the d600. and btw, the D700 with grip is HUGE. bigger than a D3/D3s/D4. the D600 is almost exactly the same size. and the big plus you didnt mention. 2 card slots in the d600. for weddings, its a MUST! for your own reputation. sending a defective card for recovery will cost $700 and up. not worth it.
and you only need the card to hiccup ONE time! one time to possibly lose once in a lifetime pics and you will get sued like crazy. everyone is looking to sue everyone today. get the D800 for higher pro speced build but for IQ the D600 can do the job till you get money for the D4/D3S ;)
Agree with the reviewer, i have both d610 and d700, low light AF in d600/d610 is crap, D700 performs way way way waaaayyy better in dark situation compared to d610.

No I had my D700 for about 3 years now. I would never sale it for the D600. The D700 body is way better.
The D700 also has a full magnesium body hence the weight, not 2/3 plastic one like the D600.
Still love my D700 :)
In places like weddings and performances it helps to have a quiet shutter.

Please see the updated video description. New D700 is $2199 but it's running out of stock everywhere, so used ones are your best bet.
Thank you for this. I am trying to make this decision, between the D600/D700 and I have not found any comparisons between them on line. Wish they would have used the D600 used the physical body of the D700 ...that would have solved all my problems

Hope you managed to get the shots you needed

You can't see anything through the viewfinder when its pitch black so why do you need the auto focus to work in darkness anyway?
