Haha! "Small town" Tampere is the 3rd largest city of Finland, with population of 250 000. Finnish cities are actually quite small. Even the Helsinki metropolitan area (between 1.2 and 1.5 million) consists of several different cities and smaller municipalities. So, there are no BIG cities.

Laavu - that's what the hut with low cealing in front of the fireplace is called. There are such things dotted all over Finland. (Google 'laavu Finland map'.) They are publicly maintained and one can sleep in them for free. Typically firewood is also provided for free and there can be a composting outhouse also (if not, do your business deep in the woods and cover it with moss etc.). That is, toilet paper is a must to bring with. It's also good to bring a tent with oneself, if one goes to a rather distant one, because it's first arrive first served basis. And buy anti-mosquite spray. Just for your own sanity.
In Finland we have what is called 'every man's rights' (jokamiehen oikeudet), which allows us to camp everywhere except too close to a house (at least 50 m distance from the house). We can also hike and pick berries and mushrooms everywhere outside of that distance. Putting up fires can be prohibited in the summer because of the risk of forest fires. That is, one has to check out the Finnish weather warnings during the summer and see if camp fire is allowed. Also, as said elsewhere, fishing with anything else than the boyant thing and a worm requires a license. It's not that expensive.

Mostly wood is used in sawmills, pulp- and paperfactories. Nowdays those canals are used by boats and little passenger ships. Have a nice trip and enjoy your stay in Finland. I don't know whether someone has commented this or not but technically you need "fisheries management fee" for spinning in Finland. (It's used for taking care of lakes.) There is very very slim change that anyone will come to check it but just so you know. 🙂 You can fish freely with basic fishing pole without lure, just worm, though. 🙂

For mosquitos by some OFF if you need powerful repellent. Of course it's not miracle maker still, you need to be fast in the doors if you don't want them in. 😃
Also logging or what you called the floating logs in rivers is actually growing industry in Finland at the moment because of gas prices. It's cheaper than using trucks. 🙂 There is just not enough people at the moment who know how to do it, to do it as much as the saws and paper mills need wood. It never has stopped in Finland totally but it has been dwindling down but know it's booming industry again. 🙂

  • @meverkko

OK. Fishing in Finland. Fishing with the floater, "onki" in Finnish, is free for everybody. The wobblers and spoons, spinning. That would actually require a permit. It's not expensive though and it is for the whole country. The spinning thing can be difficult. You need many spoons and you never know which one is good for a certain lake, spot or amount of light. It just takes practise.

You should get Bete Lotto lures for spinning, many fishing gear stores sell them. They are not best lures for specific species in specific waters but they can catch fish almost everywhere. From perch, pike to grayling and trout in the north. In general colours should be on reddish side, at least northern parts of Finland. Not that important though.

@@sprintervanconversions Outside the regular road network there is extensive network of forest roads, which have been build and maintained primarily for forestry.
      Use of forest roads
Regarding the forest roads maintained by Metsähallitus and their use, it is good to take into account the points mentioned below. Other road managers may have somewhat different principles regarding the use of similar roads.
      Movement and parking
The usual use of personal transport by individuals is free of charge.
You can move on forest roads on foot, by bike and with motor vehicles approved for road traffic. Due to timber and soil transport, the structure and maintenance of forest roads differ to some extent from roads intended for general traffic. Efforts have been made to build the roads to be load-bearing. Therefore, the surface material used is often rougher than normal.
Due to the limited maintenance of the road, you should be prepared for potholes, loose stones and earth and other unexpected hazards. For this reason, it is important to remember to always use the correct situational speed. During the construction phase, forest roads are mainly designed to be driven at a maximum speed of 40 km/h.
Traffic on the forest road is the driver's own responsibility. The driver must be more careful than on roads primarily intended for passenger traffic. It is also worth remembering that there are large lumber trucks and other heavy machinery on the road. Passenger cars may not be parked on the side of the road or in turning and storage areas in such a way that it becomes difficult for large combinations of vehicles to move and work.
