So while MOST VIPs are done by the original artist, there can be VIPs done by other artists as well.
The distinction between a VIP and a remix, to me, is that a VIP keeps the same general vibe/structure as the original, whereas a remix takes pieces of the original track and melds it into something new. It's kind of in the name, variant in production implies subtle changes in the original, where remix implies a complete overhaul of the songs structure/tone/bpm.
