- HD audio for "25 Or 6 To 4" by Chicago, from the album Chicago II.
Chicago 25 or 6 to 4 Lyrics:
Waiting for the break of day
Searching for something to say
Flashing lights against the sky
Giving up I close my eyes
Sitting cross-legged on the floor
25 or 6 to 4
Staring blindly into space
Getting up to splash my face
Wanting just to stay awake
Wondering how much I can take
Should I try to do some more
25 or 6 to 4
Feeling like I ought to sleep
Spinning room is sinking deep
Searching for something to say
Waiting for the break of day
25 or 6 to 4
25 or 6 to 4

They were in no way underrated , in your mind maybe. This is said under every video on TH-cam. So every video on TH-cam is underrated huh? Just stop it, you look ignorant saying this.
They were played constantly on both AM and FM radio rock stations. They were not underrated, nor was Terry Kath. Their first three (5?) albums were masterpieces! They veered off into pop and that dissapointed many, including me. Terry was amazing! But he kinda got pushed to the background as Peter started getting love for his awesome voice- and that's even oversimplifying it. Members had different personal musical likes and they (as a whole) and the general public gravitated to Peter's voice and ballads blah blah blah. In my opinion, they just kind of petered out over time as their effort to sell more records gradually replaced their desire to ROCK.
Chicago has never been underrated! They are one of the most successful bands Billboard and RIAA history, second only to The Beach Boys. One probably needed to live thru the 70s to know how popular they were!
@@chrisk973 Agree with most of what you wrote -- and was "petered out" intentional (Cetera)? At their best...pretty much those first 5 albums, they might be my favorite band of all-time after The Beatles...just great, another music stirred my soul. It was great, and about something -- freedom, creativity, love of one another, etc. While Cetera is great here - and was a fine vocalist and bass, I probably preferred both Kath's and Lamm's vocals just a little.

You know you're good when you're admired by Jimi Hendrix! RIP Terry Kath!
Even Jimi Hendrix was impressed by the guitar solo!
I'm sure he would have been, but there's no record of his ever saying so. When Hendrix told Walt Parazaider and James Pankow "your guitar player is better than me," Chicago was the house band at the Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood, which they stopped being in 1968, when they started opening concerts for Hendrix. Chicago II wasn't released until 1970.

@@BoredOuttaMySkullBoi An accidental self-inflicted gunshot is worse. Guns are so stupid. American scourge. Wake up America!
This song was a hit in the summer of 1970 and really didn't sound like anything else at that time. To this day I don't really think of this as a song, but rather a journey. This was also the summer of CCR who had string of top 10 hits, but really nothing as solid and driving like this track. Coming off the heels of the Beatle's last gasps, it was just what the world of music needed at that summer. As the intro builds from one guitar, to the bass and drums --we have an extremely unusual brass chart that all of a sudden hits this quick dut-dut-dut-dut-dut right in its middle. Okay, now we're listening..
The verse continues on with the same descending bass chord progression, with still some more brass blasts, then goes into a rather simple three-chord chorus with some amazing lead guitar licks interwoven with the lyrics.
After another verse and chorus we get that timeless rousing and amazing guitar solo from Kath that is still considered a coup for any life-long student of the instrument if he is ever able to nail it.
. When the vocals return there's even more amazing Kath licks in the verse and chorus as the brass drives on and then we have one of the most amazing song endings in the history of rock music. It takes us all by surprise as the brass suddenly blasts a previously unplayed minor chord. As it creeps down to another minor chord, it sublimely tells us all “now THIS is different” we now realise what we have been listening to was something like a charging freight train slamming its brakes, as its journey is about to end. As it slows down even more, the chords just blast out long and hard and become even more discordant. As it all finally comes to a screeching halt, you can almost see the sparks flying from the wheels right on that still extremely harmonically unstable and unresolved chord finishing up the journey the song has taken us on..
Wow! A great analysis on technics and aesthetics. Thanks!
Casparus, what's your take on the guitar solo from Jethro Tull's Aqualung?
I'll have to listen to it again.
Let me know what you think.
Michael Young

The opening sounds so modern, Chicago was really ahead of there time
"The opening sounds so modern…" Have to chuckle a little at this. When the teenage me first heard that opening in 1970, it struck me as somehow deliberately old-fashioned, a throwback to film noir scores of the 1940s. I'm almost 80 and this has been my favorite recording since 1970, when I bought Chicago 2 ..... their second album, and my brother and I listened to this song over and over about 12 or 14 times. The guitar sometimes brings tears to my eyes it is sooooo damn good.
Uncle Paul likes em at ‘5 or 6’
The lyrics resonate with every patient at any nursing care facility.
Chicago! What can I say, timeless, unbeatable and nobody have ever matched you!
This song was the best song ever!! I am an African American woman and I can appreciate ALL the instruments in this song! Chicago is a phenomenal artist instrumental group!! I saw them last year at Ravinia 2019! Absolutely amazing group
Delaware, as a younger person you have excellent taste ! I grew up in Chicago and burbs . I saw original band i '73 twice . 33 years later in Vegas , still sounded great .
The fuck does being an African American have to do with anything? At all? No one gives a fuck. And by the way, drop the “African”, unless you’re actually from there, in which case drop the “American”.
My friend just put me on to them today. I can't stop listening. Thank you Billy 💪🏾💯
You should, mama! It's beautiful and cool.
Funnily enough Delana as an English white man I too can appreciate ALL the instruments in this song. There again I am 70 and have been playing drums in bands at various levels all my life.
Terry Kath 😇 RIP. Your guitar riffs will be with us till the end of time. This solo is one of the best in the 70's by anyone!!!! I'm 60 years old now and I'll be listening to this until I'm 95 or older!!!!! 😇🎸🌝
I'm 70 and this music is still the best.
59, México City, they know what they did. Extraordenary. Spark for us. Ups, downs .
As a "birther" I'm ashamed that I wasn't aware of Kath's incredible talent until a few years ago. He's in a category with Hendrix and the like. I'm only saying that because Hendrix thought Terry Kath was the best guitarist he'd ever seen.
we sure hope so.....
The thing is the solo is insane but his fills throughout the whole song are amazing too. He just kills this entire song.
I was never a "fan" of Chicago, and that said the entire song is undeniably one of the greatest songs ever!😊
This makes me want to go back in time and fix my mistakes
Ah the mistakes. that was part of the times.
Ovit, this makes me want to go back in time and make MORE mistakes! 😂
Too late foward we go
Terry Kath must be one, if not the most underrated guitarist of the history, along with Krieger, Lifeson, Prince, Moore, Trucks and Neal Schon. Hope he is rocking in heaven.
I kinda agree. Then again Jimi Hendrix did say that Terry Kath was better then him. If you ask me he is as great as Hendrix shame they died young.
I agree 100% thanks.you know your stuff👍👍👍👍
I agree 100%
+Sento Schon has a great guitar he designed on the market under his name. That's pretty cool.
+IronheadOfScroteus *had
I remember this great song through the years past, and listening to it again in year 2020, it’s better now than ever...
Valinor Mons same
Same
One of my favorites since the early 70’s.
School bands would cover this and it was great!
@@joemesgleski3608 A wonderful song about insomnia and writers block!
OH YEAH!
I got this stuck in my head ever since watching Bruce Wayne beat up Ezra Miller. Gold!
I'm bouncing around all happy now.😊
cringe
King of the hill got me here just to check out this song thanks 😅
Me too!
I wrote 25 or 6 to 4 as the answer to my math test... the teacher was rather pleased, lmao.
Awesomeness!!!
😂😂😂
Hilarious!
This song should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
Yingchi, do you remember what the math question was? I'm hoping it was something like "Complete this series: 68, 67, 58, ?".
This is the music God listens to
I think you are right.
heh heh heh heh heh
My dad is in Heaven and this was one of his favs so you’re absolutely right.
*God
You know this is a cocaine song definitely not what god listens too lol
Been lookin for the name of this for like YEARS. Thank you 2023 Flash Soundtrack 😁
BatKeaton marvelous taste for music brought me here.
Was looking for Forty six and two by Tool. Found this on accident and clicked because Chicago is awesome. I don't regret it. Best find in a long time.
Serendipitous
stink fist
Both r awesome
I was looking for 5 to 1 by the Doors.
I remember my mom telling me before they were Chicago they were CTA she used to listen to them play live on the hill in the suburbs. How I wish I was young in those times.
I used to say the same thing lol& iam 71 baby
They played everywhere all across Chicago. Repeatedly saw them and Styx (who played a lot of high schools)
Too cool guys! Love hearing about that kind of stuff, and different people's experiences. Thanks for sharing! 💕
Chicago was one of the BEST as far as I am concerned. Their music was appreciated by many generations and when I was at the Lake in 1974 and having a good time even the "older" generation of people would stop and listen to the music. Great Days my friends. Driving my convertible to the lake, to down and jammin' all day. 🏖
This tune is by far my fav Chicago jam. From Terry Kath's guitar work, to the big band horn section, to Peter Cetera's vocals it is such a fine piece of work. By the way, Cetera's jaw was wired shut when recording this, which adds to the amazingness of this song.
Terry Kath makes this song awesome!
It wasn't just the horn section....they whole crew.....they were one.
It was definitely a musical powerhouse. I think Peter Cetera is still active even in his 70's
Straight up ;)
My dad played this in the car last year and I FINALLY FOUND IT!!!
The instrumental was the opening theme music on WTOP Channel 9's Washington Senators broadcasts their last season in DC in 1971
Found out what's it's about, the time and guy sitting on the floor writing a song about whatever...
@@rockvilleraven Really? That’s a bit weird, considering most of the band’s lineup at the time were Cubs fans
Really happy a lot of people are watching this in 2024, its a good song
This song was a major hit back in the 1970s and today in 2024 - still thousands of people still cheering them on!
Terry Kath is the most under rated guitarist of all time. The man had a brilliant musical mind, could absolutely rip on the guitar and his voice was soulful and well, just awesome especially on the track “Make me smile”.
FYI: He smoked cigarettes on stage while he played. When he played his solo in this song, he ended up surrounding himself in a cloud of smoke and absolutely blew the house down...What a performance!
@@bill8908 He got the idea from Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water”. He always said that it totally Thumped!!
'Terry Kath is the greatest guitarist on the planet' , said Jimi Hendrix when he saw him... This song proves it.. !!
First four notes and EVERY KNOWS THIS JAM....ONE OF THE GREATEST GUITAR JAMS EVER.....
This song is so good. And that one double shot dad TH-cam commercial is hilarious😂
