Hail Damage? The White Combine Strikes!

  • Every farmer fears the white combine. We have have gone years without any and then have the entire farm totaled out in one season. Farms typically do carry some hail insurance which should cover expenses but rarely do you come out on top. Overall we are grinding away at harvest preparation and each day inching closer to being ready while the crop continues to ripen. Let's do this!

Even if it only looks like only 1% loss you always call to get a hail claim adjusted. As a crop adjuster, you learn that what looks like nothing, through bruising, can end up being a huge loss. On the other hand you can have beans that look like nothing is left, but still comes up good. That's why adjusters always wait a week after the storm to appraise hail, you can't see what the damage really will be until the crop has had a chance to either recover or for all the damage to be visible.

As a teenager (in the 1970's) we farmed south of Malta (90 miles east of Havre) - I remember watch the grey green sky roll in - Dad knew it was hail - we drove to town in the hail. Dad was sure the crop was gone. Before the hail the crop was phenominal - when we got back out to the farm in the morning we found out that we had damage. We also found out the white combine skipped a lot of the crop while it ploughed some of the nicest into the ground. As you said, the Lord is good - always! The overall crop was still better than a normal year. I SO enjoy your GREAT You Tube work.

I would put a little ziploc bag 4x6 of ammonia sulfate in a big water tank on the water wagon for spraying and never had to power wash or a plugged nozzles on the sprayers.

Nick, on the 9370 dragging a brake. Run an air line into the building, to help air up the truck, tee in either by the truck air tank, or under the hood, closer to the compressor (better protection from grit and grime). If you have a decent sized compressor in the shop, it will cut down the air build time immensely, so you don't have to be in so much NOX fumes. Bad for your health.
    Best wishes all
