Guys like Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor used to scare TV hosts to death. They were afraid their show would get cancelled for something they said. That alone made it worth watching.
You really think so? I figured that was moreso Pryor. (I cannot remember if Murphy did that too.) Pryor spoke more about his life than Foxx on stage, cuz his comedy required the audience to sort of understand that. He'll talk about his dad being abusive, his mom, his crazy strict grandmother, all in a poor neighborhood. He'd talk about local drunks.
He was a sweetheart. I just forgot about my parents telling me when they were on their honeymoon in 1968 in Atlanta, GA they were at a hotel he was performing at and he came and sat down at their table just to talk they said he was the nicest man they'd ever met!
Thts how I lot of comics back then kept time. Bcuz the audience would laugh a lil longer than usual from certain jokes that had to progress. The cig kept the timing and smoothness to kinda mimic how he would tell it with his friends.

BTW, for those too young for to have seen his show first run, no host ever could shift gears with guests like Dick Cavett. Nobody was better than Johnny Carson with comedians and entertainment figures of stature, but Cavett could go from Lester Maddox one night to Redd Foxx another and handle both brilliantly.
I remember at the age of 16 going to a bar in St Louis on Goodfellow & Delmar and seeing Red Foxx live. He also was on live radio 1600 am. His show was late at night around 11 pm to 1 am. Who remembers this, he was the best!
I think he severely underestimated the price of a good cat. They're only cheap as kittens before you put any work into them. But I do love Redd. And I still laughed.

Watching even the Cavett interview with him, he said himself he had to skip through a lot of jokes in his mind to get to another one, and he even said it during his performance here. He was a total pro. I think Eddie Murphy said he was the one that was just naturally funny. I assume he meant out of himself, Foxx, and Pryor. If you watch some of the Bob Einstein (portrayed Super Dave Osborne, and Marty Funkhouser from Curb Your Enthusiasm) interviews on TH-cam, Einstein recounts some amazing Foxx stories.

Saw Redd Foxx and his wife one night riding up La Cienega in his little Mercedes roadster many years ago. One of my friend in my car wanted to yell out to him. Not being the groupie fan-type, I discouraged her from doing so, but she yelled out to him "Hi Redd!". He was vary gracious, smiled and waved back to us. I appreciated that.
He was so articulate and well spoken, goes to show what good acting skills he displayed on Sandford and Son.... Also I like how he checked the host... "I dont know any Negro comics
