Riddick Bowe's Superb Boxing & Insane Power Punches Explained - Technique Breakdown

  • It’s hard to think of a more complete fighter than former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world Riddick Big Daddy Bowe. His record is near immaculate, having only lost once to Evander Holyfield, a loss that he later avenged. Bowe’s numerous KO’s were a testament not only to his tremendous strength, size and power, But also to his ability to set those shots up with skillful out boxing and infighting.
    Bowe was a quintessential boxer-puncher, using his boxing skills to stay safe and set up his harder shots. A fighter who can throw disciplined, tight shots and then suddenly transition to devastating haymaker’s is one of the most dangerous fighters to deal with. And Bowe could do this at both long range and close range, showcasing a signature power punch for each.

Sucks that Bowe and Lennox Lewis did not go at it, may have possibly raised Bowe's profile and legacy higher given their shared history. Bowe is definitely top three greatest Heavyweights to come out of the 90s but I do think the volume of high level opponents that are on Lennox's and Holyfield's resumes are greater than Bowe's wins, not to mention their performances and achievements; Holyfield being the only four-time Heavyweight champion and Lennox being the last undisputed Heavyweight champion beating a young powerful new generation Heavyweight in Vitali Klitschko in his very last fight at 37 years old. Lennox was the only one to fight and beat the new generation, very few fighters in history has done this as the young and hungry eat the old and worn but Jon Jones beating Dominic Reyes is really the only one that comes to mind but even then many people believe Reyes won that fight (but the TKO 6 in the Lewis v Klitschko is controversial as well).

      To put your statement into perspective, getting into shape WAS Bowe’s weakness, much moreso than other fighters who were known for being undisciplined, because he was better than most of those (think eighties fighters like Tubbs, Page, Terrible Tim...). So if you take away his main weakness, of course you’d have a pretty damn great fighter... which is not to say he wasn’t great, anyway, I agree he was, and you could be correct about Bowe’s two Holyfield wins - he definitely deserves a LOT of credit for erasing the “0” in Evander’s “L” column. IMO that’s always a big deal, hanging a GREAT boxer’s first loss on him...

    Bowe was on paper the perfect heavyweight boxer. Stiff jab, heavy overhand, decent defense, good combo that's paired with good footwork and not to mention he had one of the greatest trainers of all time. He was the most versatile heavyweight boxer I know. Talented both in skill and physique. If he fought lewis, the fight would've been probably the most exciting back and forth battle as both have them were very similar in both talent and skill

      Do you remember and/or have you ever been made aware of Donald Curry? (Not trying to put you down, Idk how acquainted with Welterweights in the 80s you are)...
      It’s difficult to tell if Curry LOST IT after being roughed up and beaten by Lloyd Honeyghan, or if he was ALWAYS more hype than anything, but he was BEAUTIFUL to watch, so smooth, a hard puncher, it appeared Curry had no major weaknesses. He was touted as the “next” Sugar Ray Leonard, was considered even BETTER than SRL by some writers...
      I glimpsed a post that mentioned Mike McCallum, and that made me think of Donald Curry... McCallum is another guy whose career it’s difficult to get a “handle on”, he was probably older than he ever let on, and he had a KILLER left hook, which Donald Curry first found out by watching the REPLAY of his fight with The Body Snatcher, since the punch completely SEVERED Curry from his senses.
      However, McCallum also started compiling “L’s” once he moved up to 160...we probably should’ve gotten to see McCallum fight Hagler, but Mugabi was the boxer the writers/fans getting all the HYPE, IIRC...

    • @icebear2017
      @icebear2017 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tuckercarlsonsmicropenis1283 Yes, I do remember Donald from his match with McCallum as I was more of a McCallum fan with his clean crisp punching, but you're obviously right Donald Curry did box beautifully, effectively countering McCallum to a certain degree before McCallum snatched his soul.
      McCallum's decision of moving up to light heavyweight and Cruiserweight was certainly a bad one.

    can't say many fighters off the top of my head which i can't even think of a tactic to beat, many of the best fighters in history had a pretty obvious counter strategy that even a weaker fighter that can't take the punches and give back harder ones can utilize, it's just that the plan being simple doesn't make it easy, for example tyson, technically you should just circle around him and dash in and out with quick jabs, since he's a counter puncher himself, and an offensive one at that, eventually you'll also have an opportunity to counter his hook or one of his counters and he will also get tired over time, however for this plan to work you have to keep an insane pace to keep him at bay and have punches land faster then he can counter when fighting off your backfoot, this is part of the reason there are weight divisions because while it's theoretically possible for a middle weight to beat tyson like this it's highly improbable. but in bowe's case i just don't see that option, he polished his style to specifically be able to fight against anyone evn a bit smaller then him and i can't see how someone should even train to beat him, he has built in headmovement tracking and extra reach with a heavy jab to outpoint you at long and middle range and for infighting you're pretty much guaranteed to be hit at least once unless you can crack his ribs or something, and him being most likely the bigger man in the fight with a good chin it's highly unlikely he will drop from early power shots, you're in it for the long hall with him, while about 3 or 4 of his power shots could cause permanente brain damage on the spot. how do you beat this guy except just being bigger and bullying him with a bigger reach?
