Hi from Chicago. I'm blessed to get a variety of sweet potatoes from Green City indoor winter farmers market. ❤❤

I grew the Carolina Ruby’s as my first time sweet potato growing variety. We ate it baked on Thanksgiving and it was absolutely delicious.

I was really, really pleased with that taste. We will have to grow more of them. They have everything I am looking for in a good sweet potato for sure!

It's 5 months later as I write. Just picked up two varieties from the local large west coast Asian market: Okinawan and Satsumamiso. Cellaring for now, and will retain for slip propagation. Will be in a zone 7 pH 5.5-5.8 excited for this project...

I just came across your channel thank you for the information on about the variety of sweet potatoes that are grown... Being a city kid from Detroit, I was first introduced to the white sweet potato from my neighbor Ms. Shirley. Ms. Shirley made the best sweet potato pie that I ever had and I have not had since. Years later when my mom passed away, I was afforded the chance to go to Hawaii. It was while I was in Hawaii that I tried some of the purple sweet potatoes. At first I said I'm not eating that because it looked kind of "Sus"... but once I tried it oh my goodness I fell in love with the purple one too so my two favorite ones are the purple one and the white sweet potatoes. Again thank you for your review.

I'm in Northwest Arkansas. Sweet potatoes grow like weeds here--I just wish white potatoes did. There's no cool season when it's not freezing, so even planting potatoes six weeks before the last frost will have them maturing in sweltering heat. Anyway, my purple fleshed sweet potatoes grew as fat as any that I grew this year, including a couple of truly massive ones. The variety is different (All Purple, as sold by Southern Exposure), but I have a suspicion you would get fatter purple sweet potatoes if you used some plastic to warm the soil and kept them in the ground longer, assuming that's practical.

#TEAMSWEETPOTATO & #TEAMSWEETPOTATOPIE MIGardener mentioned he gets his Georgia jet starts from Lowe's and I had no idea they carried specific cultivars, so I can't wait to look for it when we get closer to spring, I wanted to find it locally like we did the 5 varieties we grew this year.

Sweet potato pie all day long! We don't have any Lowes near us, but that is a little surprising to me as well. The local variety I have mostly seen (at local greenhouses) is the Beauregard. They are delicious, but we also grab any unique organic sweet potatoes we see to propagate slips from. It is great to find all the varieties local. I am impressed that you found 5!

In your video, you mentioned vole damage. Voles have decimated my sweet potato harvest for the last two years. They often eat the entire potato interior, leaving only part of the outside of each sweet potato! What methods do you recommend to reduce vole damage?

We have no problem growing any sweet potato in the State of MD. Covington are the best hands down of all sweet potatos. Are sweet potatos also don't look so sickly and are more robust and larger than any of these.

Sweet potatoes are so delicious 🍠 It's just so difficult to grow them in our climate.

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  3 ปีที่แล้ว

The cooler climates are pretty rough for that. This season we are also trying to grow them indoors, and if that works for us, maybe that would be a fun option, if you have the space. We are right at that border (in zone 5) where the season is almost too short, but we have a few things we do to try to heat the beds a little more and keep them warmer longer. Have a wonderful rest of your week!! Thank you for watching!

I'm growing purple sweet potatoes but I'm not sure of the variety. I have noticed that the ones I grew in raised beds were skinny like the one in your video but the ones I grew in the ground with wood chips and rotten wood in the ground and on top of the ground were humongous, a couple being larger than my head. I've had the same results 2 years in a row, so, maybe there's something to it. (I'm guessing it's because of the extra nutrients released by the rotting wood as well as moisture held in it) Anyway, I'd be interested to find out if someone else has had the same results that I did. At the very least, it's an interesting experiment. Really love this video and hope I'll get to grow some new varieties of sweet potatoes like the ones mentioned here. Thank you!

So why it’s hard to find Hanna and Japanese in the stores? I’m in Massachusetts

Go to an Asian store and you will find them. I went today and got the purple sweet potatoes. Let me know if you find them. The Japanese red potatoes I saved the slips

Great video, thank you! I love sweet potatoes, and up here in NJ, I've been able to get Japanese, Stokes, Hannah, Garnet and Jewel. My favorite so far are the two dryer ones - Hannah & Japanese - I eat a piece every single day for my carb in my daily salad - loaded with yumminess, fiber & potassium!! I'm not a fan of the orange ones because they're too mushy for me - unless I cut them up and roast them long & slow to dry them out a bit. The Stokes purple is too blah tasting for me - not sweet, not soft - dry and lacking the sweetness - yours however look much moister than the Stokes - and you say they're sweet so I'd like to try them!!
I have never seen the Okinawans near me so I ordered some and should be getting them TODAY!! I can't wait - since you said they taste like a Hannah - I'll be a happy camper!
Thanks so much for your awesome comparison - it was very helpful!! :)

The variety makes it even more interesting for us. So many different ways to prepare and enjoy them. I believe we are up to a total of 11 varieties we have tried so far, and we have another in store for next year. :)
