Sure do wish she would come out of retirement! In my humble opinion one of the best locomotives brought back to life, the stack sound, whistle, just a beautiful sight to behold!
Supposedly the person who owned this whistle, sold it within the past few years to an Reading & Northern employee. I met the person who bought it, and found the listing online at one point. The listing online stated that the last time it was on a steam locomotive was in the 90s, and the locomotive was at Galesburg Railroad days. They weren't a 100% sure but after it was put on 425 in 2019 they were pretty sure its the same CBQ 5 chime. It doesn't sound exactly like it did, but the more I listen to my clips of 425 that day i chased, the more I hear this whistle.
Sadly I never got to see her run as I was too young. BUT if there is one thing I want to do before I die, it's bringing this ol' girl back to life so she can do what she was built to do! This has got to be the loudest locomotive and the best whistle!!
Agree, let's do it! I'm 74, on my bucket list to be on the foot plate, highballing, and hanging on that whistle cord making it sing for all it's worth!
Was privileged to be alongside of Roger in Claire, MO when the first shot was taken. What a treat! She was doing all of her 60 MPH track speed in Colchester, IL. Wasn't there, but caught the Nebraska Zephyr there doing 84. People in that town get an occassional treat, and they are compliant to the crossing signals. Saw a freight doing 60 through there once.
Wow,great video. I chased 1522 both days in 02 when she had her final runs. Hard to beleive she has been sitting so long already. Anyone think she will make it out again?
UK whistles serve a completelly different purpose. They aren't used to warn people of the approaching train they are only to announce that a train is leaving a station or moving about in a yard.
Trains have whistles to warn people they're approaching. The exhaust isn't enough unfortunately. I especially love the whistle sound in this video, even in the scene where the locomotive's at speed.
Unless the excursions can be insured for signifigantly less than they currently are, and the museum gets some money together for new flues, she probably won't run again any time soon.
SHE WAS NOT SRAPPED BUT PUT IN A MUSEUM IN ST LOUIS I SAY THE CREW OF 765 NEEDS TO BUY 1522BECUSE THE OWNER DID NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO KEEP IT RUNING PLEASE 765 CREW GO TO ST LOUIS AND BUY1522 TO RUN WITH 765
SP 4449 at 70 mph+ is louder. I should know. I've ridden behind 4449 at track speed. The noise is deafening, especially going upgrade! Good lord, the stack talk!
@@stuartadamsrailfanningvideos Wow! That's an old comment. I've heard that before about 4449. I'll make my way to America one day and sample something, at least. I want to do one of the D&RGW railways, Cass, 4014 and R&N 425. Talking of loudness, I have heard a theory about British locomotives. Obviously, a big loco like 4449 will be louder than anything British but a driver told me that British engines are louder for their size because their cylinders aren't particularly smaller than other locos' but the boiler and, therefore, he blast pipe is closer to the cylinders because of the reduced height due to our poxy loading gauge. I've also heard that British engines have a deeper, more resonant bark because so much takes place inside, again, because of our loading gauge. Whatever. I dunno. I've really enjoyed watching American steam videos over lockdown. I've watched more American videos than British ones, probably!
Wrong! That whistle sounded completely different compared to the CB&Q 5 chime whistle. Both of them were obviously 5 chimes, but only one of them was better tuned and that’s the CB&Q one from 1995 (this video), not the NKP 587’s cracked one.
I don't know how many times I've seen this video, but that clip at the end sends a chill down my spine every time.
Love that last shot!
the last shot was pure awesome.

Yup, love that speed shot, made ALL the better by that fabulous Q 5-chime! Thanks for sharing.
This is no doubt my favorite video on TH-cam! Awesome job! The sound of the engine in the first scene is something I would love to experience!

She has the sharpest bark of any steam engines
1:22 to 1:46 Part Of The K&L 1522 Enginesound
That whistle sounded like the one that NKP 587 had in 1988 and 1989.
I think it’s that same whistle
Great video! Love the "Q" 5 chime. With any luck, we might get to see this old girl steam again.
Each of the scenes in this vid were fantastic! What a machine!

The Origin Of The Oceanic Express' Whistle
Who needs a whistle when u have exhaust that can be heard 10 miles away lol
+Justin Newhall Also, the bell is of no use at all. Can't even here it lol
35 miles
Justin Newhall to me both Frisco 1522 and Reading 425 have the loudest exhaust
Hell, you can barely even hear the whistle!
Whistles are overrated.
I wish #1522 was still running and doing freight extras, instead of sitting in a museum since 2002.
Alfred theloanedb12 Not yet but now I know :)
Frisco 1522 Fan 14 Doing well. Anything happen with #1522 yet?
Do you have the Money?
Beautiful
We miss you, Roger. See you in Heaven !
A beautiful piece of history
Love the 5 chime whistle on 1522, just sound like 587 and C&TS 487 altogether.
Wel the cb&q 5 chime did come from 587
Sounds almost like C&TS #484
The NKP #587 has an NKP 5-Chime not a Q 5.@@christinahartley209

Frisco 1522 at it's finest!
3:00 3:28 4:24
At 3:28, that was the whistle they used for the oceanic express in SpongeBob SquarePants
I’m pretty sure this is what CB&Q 4000 would sound like if it was restored and would be allowed to do mainline tours.
This must be how the SpongeBob crew got the recording for the whistle of the Oceanic Express.
Oceanic Express in real life
yes you correct
Edit: i was wrong with the whistle
I agree
It matches the oceanic express
It's the same whistle

what 2-8-2 had that whistle, hopefully 4963
When a bell is swinging, It usually means it's ringing. Unless the mallet is some how stuck or is removed.

Does anyone know the whistle at 3:00?
Cb&q 5 chime
Well duh, it says so both at the beginning of the video, and the description.
Is this what the O5s sounded like?
Watching the first clip, I hope everyone within a 5-mile radius of 1522 had ear protection on
Why excursion steam locomotives have to pull short freight trains & not long ones
because you only making the wear and tear worse
The second whistle sound like the one 1522 used in the movie Truman!
3:01 same whistle as face freeze
Ship It On The Frisco! 🚂🚂🚂
I know where the CB&Q 5 chime came from. From nkp 587
No. It came from one of many CB&Q mikado locomotives, not NKP 587.
Explain it sounding like a cracked whistle then
Has anyone here been at a railroad crossing and were surprised and delighted by a steam locomotive?
Yes, many times with SP&S 700 and SP 4449 here in Portland, Oregon.
They're right about "the loudest operating steam locomotive in the world"! You can barely hear the whistle in the first shot!
Could you imagine how strange what if 4500 would be like if it was in running condition would be probably wear a D&RGW 5 Chime? That would be weird!
I think 1522 should be probably be wearing a Hancock whistle from 4500 whenever she could be coming back under steam again one day.
Samuel Aufmuth Yes, that too.
Probably small exhaust ports/nozzles.
3:28 5:00 Robert(Frisco 1522)’s CB&Q 5 Chime
Love that Burlington 5-chime whistle. It suits 1522.
agreed the 587 also had that whistle as well
Sounds like what the 587 wore before.
09trainman I agree!
09Trainfan it only sounds like that because its Southern 5 chime was cracked. It was like that for the majority of its career.

so much stack talk in the first scene
