    thank you for the videos. How long do you let the BLO dry before you paint? If one was to leave it dry overnight will that effect the painting process?

    • @lunsfordcarvings
      @lunsfordcarvings  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With BLO, once you put it on and wipe off the excess, you can go ahead and start painting your washes right on the wet BLO. It will help the colors to absorb and blend well without any issues.

    Really enjoyed this series.. Question... do you use straight BLO or do you thin it with odorless mineral spirits for your base coat?

    • @lunsfordcarvings
      @lunsfordcarvings  ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually use straight but you can do it either way. Cutting it may reduce the smell and also cut back on the yellowing that may occur over time.

  • @andresrosales3466
    @andresrosales3466 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Hi there Blake. How long do you let your carvings dry after dabbing off the boiled linseed oil? It seems like you don't wait too long, but I've been told by a couple to wait a few days before painting after applying the BLO. Thanks and love your videos!

    • @lunsfordcarvings
      @lunsfordcarvings  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! I usually just paint them wet right after I get the excess BLO off the carving. It actually helps the paint blend and gives you a good finish. You can wait for it to dry, but it is not necessary.

  • @tnyberg67
    @tnyberg67 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Amazing job! So now it is time to hang it, how do you display that or intend it to be displayed? Do you put some kind of hanger on the back to put sting on so you can hang it from a tree or window?

    • @lunsfordcarvings
      @lunsfordcarvings  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tim, I usually go to an arts store and purchase some eye hooks. You can also get them on amazon. Screw them in the top of the hat and add just a dab of super glue to hold it in place. At that point you can hang from a tree or hang in a window. Hope this helps! Thanks so much for following along!

    • @tnyberg67
      @tnyberg67 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lunsfordcarvings Thank you, I know we are getting in the weeds but how about using a keyhole router bit or countersinking something in the back, the only reason I mention it is taking that thickness into account or for balancing it out when it hangs. I think the only thing this awesome set of videos lacks is a foolproof and elegant way to hang them. I can't wait to try this project - thanks again for all the videos on it and the detail. PS - I did send coffee... LOL

    • @lunsfordcarvings
      @lunsfordcarvings  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tnyberg67 Thanks so much for the coffee! It is much appreciated! Yes, the keyhole router bit would work. It really depends on where you want to hang it. I use the eye hooks just to hang on a tree, but there are a bunch of different options you can try to make it your own. I look forward to seeing your creations!

    Wonderful video and very helpful ! ! Thank you. Now that the carving is painted, how do you finish it off? I know some leave it just painted. Others paint or spray some clear coating of some kind or maybe some kind of wax. How do you finalize the piece?

    • @lunsfordcarvings
      @lunsfordcarvings  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    How do you prepare this piece for a tree ornament? How do you prepare it to dangle on the tree?

    • @lunsfordcarvings
      @lunsfordcarvings  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually I will just screw an eye hook into the top of the hat, and then tie some fishing twine through the loop to hang it on the tree. The eye hooks work well and stay in the wood good.

    • @bartleybeckert3578
      @bartleybeckert3578 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lunsfordcarvings I have used an eye hook before but sometimes the carving wouldn't hang vertical. I have done several Santa ornaments but have relieved the back of the carving, almost cleaning it out a little like a canoe, to lighten them. This likely makes them "lean" when using the eye hook. I'm thinking the weight would be more balanced leaving the back flat. Once again, thank you for responding and being so kind in your approach and in your sharing.
