OM-1 | Birds in flight | How is the autofocus?

  • Hello everybody. Have seen a few blogs and articles online recently discussing the autofocus of the OM-1 and if it has improved from it's predecessors and can it keep up with the subject and more importantly the competition. Well the answer is yes and an unequivocal yes. These conditions were hard because I couldn't see the birds and then they would be in the sky and then they would land in the marshes, all in a split second. The OM-1 did really well. My tried and trusted Nikon D500 would have got a fraction of these shots..I suppose that is just the nature of technology!
    Anyway I hope you like the video and please leave any comments below and I will get back to you.

    So many wonderful birds! Great on the wing shots. Well worth watching.

    It was interesting that all the Birds you showed are very common in the U.K. You tend to forget that lots of Birds are global. A nice tutorial which shows that to get good results you have to put in the time and effort. Great pictures as usual Richard.

      Thanks so much Eljay. Yes that is true but birds like the Widgeon would be so much more common and easy to see in the U.K than here in Okinawa. So I was really happy to get pictures because there are not so many and they will be gone soon. Maybe back to blighty.. Who knows??😀

    Hey, Richard. Thanks for talking about each of those shots and the thought that went into the action, the background , and distance of the subject. Gave me something to think about in terms of when I might want to shoot.

    Nice video. Your are just like me, BIF is what I enjoy most and being out and enjoying nature and the animals. And I also do the pre focus thing, have been doing it for years. Lots of times I even try to get the bird locked in focus at distance, and fire away only when I think the bird is close enough with the right wing position so I don't waste valuable time deleting pictures I otherwise would never use in the first place.
    The Nikon D850 "fantastic camera "actually helped me with BIF action, since it's buffer is small, older technology" pumping out 45 megapixel files can be taxing on the buffer, for the D850 at least, not the most recent Z9".
    I also shot with the D500 for five years "fantastic camera", and the camera that got me hooked in bird and wildlife photography, which I unfortunately killed during a freak mishap.
    I have been recently adding some videos to my YT channel. I don't do vlogging, as it just takes time away from enjoying nature and even getting that once in a lifetime shot.

    I just discovered your videos tonight Richard and I have to say I really enjoyed them. You have a very good eye and some incredible images. I do wonder if the very near missed that you had with the duck eye between the feathers you couldn't pull that out using a little sharpening. The software for post these days it's pretty incredible, and you can really make a silk purse out of a sows ear. I don't tell people that I do that, of course. Anyway, I also saw in one of your videos that you used a dot sight. I'd be interested to see you to do a video on that. If you ever in Cairns, Australia, look me up.

    Are u using bird and eye detect settings given that u prefocus?

    • @RichardCookphotography
      @RichardCookphotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kevin. Yes I am. Prefocus just gives the camera a hint on where you want to focus..I still want the ai bird thingy to pick up the bird👍

  • @tonigenes5816
    @tonigenes5816 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice shots.
    The preparations (background, prefocusing on grass) were very well done.
    I am wondering if using focus limiter from camera (to set-up a range like 4....100m) would help. Probably not, but you can test it if you like.

    • @RichardCookphotography
      @RichardCookphotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Toni. I have tried the focus limiter quite alot and not always sure it helps that much. Appreciate the advice though👍🙏😀

    • @tonigenes5816
      @tonigenes5816 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I expected this Richard. I did not used the focus limiter on OM-1, but I used it on E-M1 MARK II. On E-M1 MK II it helped in some particular situations, but OM-1 has a better autofocus. So the focus limiter will not make a difference.

    ? If this camera body has such a wide dynamic range how could you have blown the whites if the mid-tones are perfectly exposed?

    • @RichardCookphotography
      @RichardCookphotography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think I said anywhere that it had a really wide dynamic range but I often expose to the right and if a bird has a small proportion of really white feathers it can still be difficult to control that when the sun hits it. Are you having a nice Sunday Geoffrey?....I hope so 😀

    Another nice video Richard, some lovely photos, can I ask what lense you was using with the OM 1, I have the camera on order and going to be using the Panasonic Leica 100 to 400 with it for the time being, you may recall we discussed it a few months ago after one of your earlier videos.

    I wish I had more than a few of these images in my portfolio. I'm shooting the Lumix G9 now with the 100-400mm zoom but thinking about adding the new OM-1. Perhaps I missed it but could you speak to a rough estimate of your average keeper rate with the OM-1 and the lens(es) you were using for this shoot. I'm thinking of just keeping my 100-400mm and adding the OM-1. Any feedback you can give me would help me with my decision. Thanks.

    When i use the 300mm f4 lens and shoot with aperture f4 is this equal to shoot with a full frame for example canon r5 at f4? Or is it the Same as the Canon rf 100-500 af f8?
    I mean 300mm is 600mm on a canon r5 (full frame), is it the same with the aperture? I mean i dont wanna shot a f8 then the Sigma 150-600mm is better at 600mm with f6.4
    Can Someone help to explain that? Thanks

    • @RichardCookphotography
      @RichardCookphotography  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You get the same light as F4 as with full frame but depth of field will be like F8. This can be an advantage at times though as you get the shutter speed and iso you get with an F4 lens but slightly more dof for more of the subject in focus 👍

    • @RichardCookphotography

      @@formermpc10 Not sure what you shoot but my EM1 mk ii here would have really struggled. I couldn't see the birds.. They then take off and land 15 meters from the original position the tracking has to be super fast. My mkii wouldnt have worked. Why don't you make a video showing how the former cameras are better?😀👍

    To what extent did you need to crop to get the size of the birds right in the frame?

    • @RichardCookphotography
      @RichardCookphotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say quite a large crop as I was a distance away. 30 percent maybe 😀👍

    Hi Richard
    Thank you for sharing a brilliant video. What lens were you using here. Also is there a significant difference between the OM1 and the e-m1 ii or e-m1x. I'm contemplating one of the two bodies I mention together with an Olympus 100-400mm. How would this combination stack up for birds in flight?
    Thanks

      Hi Peter and thank you. I was using the Olympus 300mm F4.
      I haven't tried the EM1X but have the EM1 Mk 2 and feel the OM1 is a substantial upgrade. Haven't used the Olympus 100-400 but feel it would do a great job. Hope this helps👍🙏
