      I actually have a tip for placing the hotel, if you actually take off the palm tree and place it next to the police station, it provides a nice view of the soap n suds sign on police station, or if you like the tree you can leave it, but I feel like they intentionally designed the set that way so you could see the sign

      Great video.
      Do you both have your lists posted somewhere? Could you put them in the description of this video.
      Thanks ✌🏻

    The Downtown Diner and the Boutique Hotel are my favourites. Gotta say though, I think the Bookshop is underrated. It's one of the rare modular that transcends the era, it fits in with the 30s theme but at the same time looks like it could be modern-day buildings.

    Market Street is probably my least favorite, but there was never really a “bad modular” in my opinion. Each one has always been a fun build. And as for pet shop, I completely agree. Not much going on. Cafe Corner is my most wanted set, but has no interior like most of the early Modulars do. Number 1 on my list is Town Hall, then Fire Brigade, as a firefighter pretty much any classic LEGO fire station is great. Number 3 is Palace Cinema. And again, this is just a matter of opinion. Every modular has been such a fun build, and I hope to eventually piece together Cafe Corner, as that will complete my Modulars. Really enjoyed this video and hearing your favorites!

      Exactly…. All the modulars have something going for it. Now thats a goos list! Town Hall is a must! Esp for any city. Pieces together Cafe Corner… using updated pieces… is actually not that bad. I need to do the same for marketstreet.

    Diner is my NO.1. I LOVE the different layers from different angles. I love the penetrability which you don’t see on other sets. You can see the straight and curve lines blinders together. Also I love the colour combination. Hope lego can make more these kind of sets

      I remember upon release… many people were conflicted about it! But it’s really good to see that now… people really appreciate it… designs and all.

    I've only recently got into the modulars, starting with the Bookshop because it was reasonably priced (and I'm a bookworm). Now I'm already working on my 6th for my little town of Brickholm! In order of purchase, Bookshop, Boutique Hotel, Police, Palace Cinema, Assembly Square, and now Diner. Palace Cinema my favorite right now.

    I really love these kind of videos, collaborations. It’s really nice to see both of your opinions on the Modular buildings and how different they are. I started with the Parisian Restaurant as well and the Diner as my second so those 2 are special to me. Great video and please make more like it.

    I’m curious of where would you put the new jazz club? Another question is, what you think of the overall decision by Lego of making a Jazz club? Who needs that in a city? So many things they are missing!

  • @warhead5225

    I own Brick Bank, Corner Garage, Bookshop, and Assembly Square. Looking to add the Police Station to that real soon. Then I’m gonna go back and get the Parisian Restaurant and Downtown Diner. Then I’ll probably stop there until another one that really hits me comes along. The hotel only has one apartment with a bathroom. I don’t like that. In fact, I’ve added a bathroom into the bookshop because I feel only the brick bank could get away with not having one. My favorite is assembly. Just fills out so much and immediately turns your one or two other Modular’s into a city block. Then Brick Bank. I like how the whole building is for one purpose, allowing multiple rooms all centered around a bank. So you have tellers, an executive bank office, another smaller office area outside. It feels like a real bank. It wouldn’t if it followed the other Modular’s and had the upstairs serve a different purpose. It’s one of the only ones where the entire building is the purpose. Another like that is the cinema. But that’s not enough space to fill out a believable movie theater in my eyes. The brick bank is perfect in that regard. I’d say in terms of play, brick bank is the best out of them all. Assembly has it beat in looks and runs circles around it in outside appeal and genius building techniques to pull off impressive architecture. So much so that even tho I love the bank, I give assembly the dues it deserves. Really looking forward to both the diner and restaurant tho. Im a musician, I like boxing, and I work in a restaurant. All 3 levels of the diner represent what I like or do. And the restaurant is the perfect piece for when I want to make a mafia owned restaurant in this 1940s city block, redoing the second level of it to resemble a mafia dons office. Then switch out all the yellow tones of the minifigs for flesh ones and that’ll be my city block. Also looking to add the vintage car to it, the James Bond Aston Martin, and the 1930s cars from the Indiana Jones Shanghai Chase set on the streets. Got a long ways to go but the idea is coming together

  • @legodude275
    @legodude275 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I definitely feel like the bricklink modular Lego store counts as a full fledged modular. Something about having a Lego store in a city made of Lego makes me feel super giddy. Plus the overall theme and architecture of the model fits very well in the modular lineup as a whole

    The Market Street set has a bit of a backstory that makes it more of an emotional set for some people. It was designed by a Lego fan thru the Creator/Factory program, it was the first fan set to make it to market, and the designer died just before the set was released if I recall the story correctly.
    For me the #1 set is probably Assembly Square, then the Diner, and the Palace Cinema. I actually got to meet Astrid at a con when she stopped to discuss my microscale city. Bottom 3 -- Boutique Hotel is #17, then #16 Brick Bank, #15 Pet Shop.
    I have all 17 Modulars on a 20 foot long shelf in my Lego display room - makes a really nice wall of buildings. The shelf gives me room for 5 more before I have to move.

      @SHYTIMEismyTIME  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes…!!! I remember hearing about it but didn’t mention it because I wasn’t sure. Such a sad story from what I remember.
      The first fan designer set is actually set#3739 Blacksmith Shop released in 2002 designed by Brickmania’s Founder Dan Siskind.
      Assembly square is the best… even if Emily doesn’t agree haha.

    • @SHYTIMEismyTIME

      It's a good representation the fact that a lot of fans of this line... are scattered to what they call a good or bad modular... to the point where LEGO always has the difficult job in creating the perfect set.

    I placed my Boutique Hotel next to the Parisian Restaurant and I think it works really well because that side of the restaurant has a lot of detail so it being more exposed works well

    (despite owning none of the modular sets yet) my three favourite modulars are
    1. Assembly Square
    2. Parisian restaurant
    3. Brick Bank
    Assembly Square is at the top of my lift because I like big sets, and with 4002 pieces its perfect for me, but also the little easter eggs relating tom the modulars from 2007 up until the assembly square. Parisian restaurant was third on my list but after hearing you say the story about it I moved it up, i also like the visual appearance, and the colour scheme is great. Brick bank is third because its got a funny little story to it, also the appearance i like, it looks awesome with the use of zip-line pieces for roof detail, and the chandelier i like.
    While I will say the bookshop is my least favourite, its nice to look at from the front, but in my opinion i like the pet shop more, pet shop is about fifth on my list, and in fourth is the palace cinema. Boutique Hotel would be sixth, its nice and I would like it at some point, but it doesn't make me excited as much as the other modular sets.

    The police station is definitely 100% my favorite. It was my first actual modular and when I converted it to Batman themed it made me love it even more. If we are counting the marvel Modular’s tho the Daily Bugle is my #1 cause of them having Daredevil

  • @kanyewest4761

    Love the ranking and now I can't unsee the extra reference with the café corner coffee cart mini fig since Jamie was the designer to do café corner in 2007. I plan to finish my boutique hotel today and add my 9th modular to my lego city. Would be 10 but I missed brick bank. Next month I think I will rank all 9 of my modulars I have.

  • @ZombishTurkey
    @ZombishTurkey 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the police station in the middle of my city, because I consider it a centerpiece, because of the colors, and it is just pretty in my opinion. My second favorite though, is boutique, third is Parisian restaurant, fourth is bookstore, fifth is garage (these are only the modulars I own). I am probably going to get the diner, and palace cinema, the diner for obvious reasons, but I want the palace cinema because of the memories of the Great Movie Ride that used to be in Disney's Hollywood Studios, which they replaced with some mickey themed ride. I will probably moc the interior to make it look like the great movie ride.

    stranger input:
    I own Detective, Parisian, and Bugle, and give all of them good marks.
    I also own corner garage, and think its a bit small, but i still like it
    Assembly Square is VITAL I need because its going to really complete a nice city street.
    Diner looks Gorgeous, it will add a radio to my city, I would only remove the pink lettering.
    Hotel looks nice, need it.
    Need cinema for city richness, and a generic batman pic
    The bank is 10/10 story and such a powerhouse corner.
    About to get grand emporium. Its an exterior powerhouse, so with some interior tweaking itll be good
    Bookshop is super weak, the buildings both seem super small
    Market street: Opportunity to make an open street market, I would get it if it werent for the price tag lol.
    Town Hall andPet Shop add some necessary bits, being a town hall, more business, and some nice housing. I also like Green Grocer, but once again, price tag.
    I could rest easy without Cafe Hotel and Fire Brigade
    My current obtaining plan is: Assembly Square, Hotel, Diner, Cinema, Bank, etc. Unless theres an insane deal of course.

    Amazing video. New into lego world. So very cool to see all the modular buildings. I Have the boutique hotel. And am seeking out the others. I did really like the look of the assembly Square. I feel it can become a real stand out point in a city. I dont think I didn't like any of them. Maybe not the biggest fan of the pet store possibly. But great video. My Rankings
    17. Café corner (nothing against it. Just not great for now days standards. Back then perfect. Nowadays lack of interior or better pieces makes it hard to like)
    16. Market Street (I always like duel buildings and the apartment is nice. I also like it’s cameo in the lego movie)
    15. Pet a shop (one of my favorite sets. But it’s not great. Overall bias for pets is why I love the set but in all realness, it’s not great)
    14. Green Grocer (interior with nice tiling and I like the color. But it’s not the biggest eye catcher)
    13. Bookshop (I like the fall feel but I’m not the biggest fan of the set as a whole.)
    12. Detectives Office (most overrated modular in my opinion. Granted people have their own opinions and I respect that, but I don’t see the hype.)
    11. Corner Garage (looking at picture makes it feel like one of the worst modulars. But when you get it, it’s a lot better. Granted not the best, but not as bad as you thought it would be)
    10. Downtown Diner (love this set for a lot of reasons. But the left side is very weird and hard to put with other modulars. But as a stand-alone set it’s quite amazing.)
    9. Grande Emporium (heavy New York vibes. Idk what it is. But I think of a new your corner building when I see it)
    8. Parisian Restaurant (nice build and the colors are great, but putting it next to another modular is tough because the right side is a weird balcony kinda area. That’s the only really downside to it)
    7. Boutique Hotel (the more I look at it, the more I like it. All the references and colors are amazing. It’s a great set and one I am definitely buying at some point.)
    6. Brick Bank (really reminds me of Doc Ock vs Spider Man bank battle. The vault is amazing, the pieces used in general are amazing, and I love the Chandelier.)
    5. Fire Brigade (one of the best older sets ever. It looks like a modern modular and is quite amazing, the car is a nice touch, and the buildings height and coloring looks outstanding and is one of the first things you look at when looking at someone’s lego city.)
    4. Police Station (some people hate and some people love. I am a lover of this set. Amazing design, amazing posters and ads and news papers. The donut shop is a clever idea. And it looks great next to a lot of modulars.)
    3. Town Hall (heavy Parks and Rec vibes. It’s height makes it look like its the centerpiece of any lego room, the color scheme is perfect, and the Elevator is quite unique to any lego set. One of my favorite legos sets I don’t own.
    2. Assembly Square (what else can I say? It’s the biggest, has very unique design compared to any of them, and it has a lot of minifigures. A set that is hard to hate for sure. When I was deciding which modular to buy first I couldn’t stop thinking about Assembly Square so I bought it. Visually pleasing for sure)
    1. Palace Cinema (most underrated set in my opinion. I hate when people complain about the red carpet and the emptiness because it’s a modular. Of course it won’t fit a whole theater inside. And it’s the only set with a red baseplate ever. Plus the design and similarity compared to the Chinese Theater in LA makes it look amazing. I love this set and really want it one day.)
    Other “Modulars”:
    Spring Lantern Festival (I would probably put this at 18 if it were official. It’s a very spread out build but isn’t great for modular standards. But I do like it. )
    Daily Bugle (definitely would put 1. For modular standards it fits a lot of the boxes. Color scheme is very consistent, very tall which makes it stand out more, and my favorite set ever.)

    Love this topic Shy and this is my fav theme! And the contrast of opinions and preference between you and Emily is interesting. I’m more closer to Emily in terms of rating exterior as most important as that is what you look at 95% of the time after you build it. Plus I haven’t built them all yet so can’t compare build experience. My least favourite is Market Street as it looks ugly and doesn’t fit well with the others and is one of two that I don’t own yet. Then Pet Shop and Town Hall as they look boring. Top three in order are Boutique Hotel (don’t own yet but def buying multiple), Parsian Restaurant and Green Grocer for their exterior looks. Maybe my opinion will change once I build them all.

Now if I had to start all over, the Parisian Restaurant would be the first I’d go for, followed by Assembly Square. Boutique Hotel and the Diner would be next, then Corner Garage. The bricklink lego store modular didn't count as a lego modular as it isn't really Lego. it wasn't designed by lego, even market street had a lego designer involved. And on the front of the box it probably won't say Lego which shows that Lego is distancing themselves from it. If brickmania sold a set called a modular would you have to include that? It's still built from lego bricks.
    However if you did include it, for me it would be bottom of the list, a whole modular used for just a lego store with a tiny store room doesn't fit the theme, the bank comes with a laundrette, the police station comes with a doughnut shop, the only modulars with a single entity are those that just couldn't be done any smaller, department store, cinema, town hall and fire brigade.

    • @SHYTIMEismyTIME
      @SHYTIMEismyTIME  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol the LEGO store was just to bring up the conversation that leads to anything else that follows modular rules… but are not modulars. But to dive into it.. BrickLink is under the LEGo Group now… so therefore… just as much LEGO if not more LEGO than… lego by target, adidas, or movies and video games. Also the boxes that we’ve seen so far from those in the EU that already received the boxes from the first round… has a LEGO logo on it… and they’re made from a LEGO factory in Europe… so made by LEGO. Remember LEGO ideas aren’t originally designed be LEGO designers either. A modular LEGO store by Brickmania wouldn’t count.. for the obvious reasons that it doesn’t touch the LEGO group. In the end… it comes down to.. does the LEGO modular Store follow the rules of what “us as fans” think what modular rules are… because they’re rules that fans have made… based on what we see in the line… not necessarily what LEGO has created…. It would be blow everyone out of the water if LEGO created a modular in the future that was just an open space building!

    Wow I never realized the drastic difference in LEGO mods between the market street / pet shop vs all the more recent mods. There is a huge difference in texture and details. The bottom 2 on the list do not deserve the aftermarket prices they have. The design standards definitely don’t hold up to todays parts usage. Yes they are nostalgic but they def look like 🗑 compared to the rest. (When compared they just look way outdated from a design pov) You can clearly tell when they hired Jamie 💯 👍

      Exactly…. People hold the first 3 as better than whats out now… although really good for their time… and the rarity…. Technique wise… it doesn’t compare… in the end its like comparing a tesla to a Ford model T… obviously one is better in well… everything… while the other… was the birth of a line and rare to find.

    • @ljoffe
      @ljoffe 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are asking for and getting those prices because the older sets are using bricks which are no longer being made or not being made in the colors in the sets. That makes them impossible to part out easily.
