If Gamestop can get their shit together (I know...I know), they might be on to something by converting to a retro game company. Game preservation is such a hot topic right now and we need something dedicated to it. Their entire identity has always been about being a second hand game store...if they can figure out how to get retro stock, they might actually find a way to become relevant again.
Hour perception of time is so different, I think 45 minutes is close... But this is the DC area. So I happen to live 10 minutes away from a "Retro" Gamestop. The next closest one is around 1 - 2 hours away, depending on time of day. I have only went once so far and just to see what was "available". Now what they had on display was lame common items from the PS3 and Wii U era. But the Manager saw that I was curious and looking for the "good" stuff. Prob profiled me being a 40 year old dude with a Mario Kart (SNES) shirt on. He went to the drawers behind the desk and pulled out a few items... I always ask for PS Vita games if available. But he pulled out a Pilot Wing 64 cartridge with Blockbuster tape all over it... I said that is mine now. Then he busted out a SNES Jurassic Park cartridge and that was mine as well. I am very bias on games that I played when I was a child... Is it all trash, yes. But you never know until the dealer opens up his jacket for the real deals.
I went to mine, and it wasn't the worst thing ever. They had pokemon fire red for the GBA for $55 after tax. No systems, from what I saw, aside from 3DS. I was going to get it, but knowing how much trouble the company is, and knowing I can't sadder, I couldn't justify buying it, because of the battery. I can't say " hey GameStop fix this battery for me" either going to the store or shipping. The concept I'm here for, especially if they drop Xbox, but they need to spread out the stock, instead of cramming it into a corner, and maybe get into the repair business? Like I said, fix the batteries in the GB or GBA cartages, or systems. Might need to hire extra employees to do that task, but it could work. I can't get to my local game store, because the bus doesn't go there, and family is a pain when it comes to driving me. I think there's one in Boston, that I can get to, but it's like a 3 hour bus trip, which isn't bad for me. But still a pain, if I don't buy anything.
I wouldn't even call what they have "retro". A small selection of PS3, 360, and 3DS games is a sad excuse for retro. This could honestly be a big thing for them, but their execution has been terrible. I've watched a few videos from other channels and they seem to be having the same experiences I had.
So one of the reasons is the store managers and employees are sniping the games when they come in and reselling them online. Anything of significant value gets scooped up in the parknig lot. good luck

Mom and pop store does not sell new games until they are like a year old. So I found out. That we had a gamestop retro near my house. I went there and I was excited. But when I got there, I didn't See any retro games. I asked a girl behind the counter where they were. And she got all excited saying oh I love that we sell the retro stuff again. I'm so excited. She showed me the selection and I was dumbfounded. All there was was a few d. S games and some PS3 games. To me, that's not retro. I asked her if they had Nintendo super. Nintendo or even gamecube. And she looked at me like I was crazy speaking another language. Please if anyone is looking for retro games don't go to gamestop. Find a local mom and pop store near you. And most of the retro stuff at gamestop are bootlegs anyway.
I really want to see that Ninja Turtles collection back there.

Gamestop should be out of business by now. There is zero reason to shop there. Mine do not even have retro stuff anymore.
