this was really a heartbreaking day for me.. i use to tell people this was my idol when i was young.. This moment changed me and millions of lives forever.. live on magic!
Man, I have always liked Magic. He is so respectful to the game of basketball and he is probably the most complimentary player I have ever heard of. Im glad he is doing well. He and Bird were a decade before my time, I wish I had the chance to watch him in his prime.
As a lifelong Celtics fan, fanatic in the 80s, I was absolutely crushed when this happened. I'm not kidding when I say that Larry&Magic pretty much made my teen years for me. That rivalry, lead by these 2 men, was awesome.Showtime was everything:scary, fun to watch, just a brilliant team, and of course my blue-collar Celts with Larry,Chief,&Kevin.Oh, those were great days!Highlight of 08 Finals was seein Magic on TV again.Greates Laker ever, and that's saying a lot.My fav, anyway.
this was my saddest ever day in basketball history, coming back from practice and my mum telling me about this, my idol retiring being ill, and now today, kobe is gone forever... my two saddest basketball days..... damn.
I love the attitude Magic had. His life continues to go on today, nearly 20 years later. He's a brave man, and I'm glad he's been doing fine all these years, because HIV doesn't go away.
What composure. I have a lot of respect for how he handled such horrific news and to see him still doing so well even 20 years later is just amazing to me. I've got a lot of respect for Magic in many ways.
In many respects, Magic Johnson was the greatest thing to happen for the education of HIV and AIDS awareness. It pursuaded people to do more research on the disease open their eyes to the facts of the virus and disease. It was such a taboo subject before Magic came out and this made it more comfortable to talk to.
I was 11 years old at the time of this announcement. Magic always has been and always will be my favorite Laker. I sobbed when he announced he was retiring. I didn't understand why he was retiring at the time, I just knew (or thought at the time anyway) he wasn't gonna come back and play. Thank goodness he's still with us 20 years later.
WOW. What a man Magic is. Such a great human. Such a strong person. The annoucement was the most moving thing I have ever seen. I hope all the best for him and everyone who is suffering from this or any other horrible disease.
What a beautiful, honest, courageous man to approach this fickle and delicate issue so openly. He is such an inspiration. This is the way is gotta be done. Honesty, positivity and communication is key.
The announcement brought me here great documentary. Gotta show my support for a legendary spartan. Magic was always a positive man glad he was able to fight and survive through HIV
i immediately made my little bro watch all the laker games i had on tape and watch all the dreamteam games and was trying to teach him how great magic was as a player and a person and to have fun like magic + this'n'that, guess i was trying to get my brother to learn/see about him cuz i didnt think he'd be around by the time my brother was old enough to know, back then hiv meant death.. SO very sad thank god he's still alive, a true miracl, medicine, love ya MAGIC! Best pg ever, true rolemodel.
Much respect to Mr. Johnson. I'm happy that he's been able to be a survivor and yet still live his life in a positive way. We need more human beings like him. Thank you Mr. Johnson and I wish the best for you and your family; the world needs courage, and you provided it.
i was doing my ninth grade math homework, when a friend called me and told me turn on the tv and was telling me about magic, it was a numbing moment and so glad for him that he's come along way, keep going magic, i'lll always love u man
This man was my hero...MY HERO....I wanted to be like him in every essence....I cried the moment that I seen this on tv...I ran to my room and I cried...He was a great baller...I just couldn't believe it....
this was one of those moments that you remember exactly where you were when you found out like 9/11. that day is so clear in my mind.... magic never should have retired
Magic was my role model growing up and he still is. He comes accross as a happy go lucky guy and most importantly, he's the best basketball player to ever walk on a court, second only to Jordan and maybe Kareem
it's almost exactly 19 yrs ago from today since Magic made this announcement. I remember where i was then...I cried in front of the TV while watching this news:( glad to know that he is still alive. too bad he had to retire from basketball so early. he could've won 2 or 3 more NBA rings...
Magic Johnson is one of the most admirable sportspersons and celebrities in the world, he is an example of character, of positiveness and he had it all fame, fortune, good looks, and the love from people. Im sure his example has awared many people about the risks of aids, and probably saved many lifes. And for those who have it, it has been probably a huge moral support.
I can't believe how many people were writing and saying that he had "AIDS" in their articles but he had HIV. I can't believe how little people knew about AIDS/HIV in 1991.
Its amazing how he came forward and said he would going on with his life. Im sure most people think this is the end of the line for me. What is keeping him alive and why does Africa or the States not have it? Why is he not reaching out to his brothers and sisters? Who has Majic Johnson on a chain?
@laz2thedouble Its a sign of respect to his fans, and to let people know that he is as ok as possible. It took lots of heart and courage to do what he did. The guy retired, and he was one of the best of all time, a press conference was needed.
9:33 is the spirit of Magic Johnson: "I'm gonna go on, I'm gonna beat it, and I'm gonna have fun." Only a man like him can "have fun" while beating HIV/AIDS
Its crazy to think that this was 28 years ago and today he is alive and healthy and doing well. I'm glad that he is one of the lucky one who was able to get a hold on it.
It's nice to know watching this 20 years ago today that Magic's coming revelation of his HIV diagnosis broke down the wall regarding the subject of HIV/AIDS with regard to awareness and debunking the myth regarding the cause of the disease and making it more easier to talk about in society. More importantly he took the news with a positive attitude and despite the odds, he is still alive and well on this planet today. Magic wasn't just a fantastic athlete, but he's a great human being.
How many politicians these days can handle a press conference like Magic Johnson? I've seen this video many times in the last two decades but I just realized that lately. I don't remember him ever reading a paper for a speech.
I just saw him on the Olympics. He said that when they called him to join the Olympic Dream Team after he announced it, that's when he realized that he could beat HIV! Now that's a fighter!
The younger generation sees this and thinks "wow what's the big deal? he's still alive even." Well, at the time of Magic Johnson announcing this the world knew very little about HIV/AIDS; there were many misconceptions/taboos, and everybody thought Magic would be gone within a year. So for that to happen to a star athlete like Magic was a big deal.
Why are people so mean?I don't get it.It doesn't matter how he got it and stuff like that, fact is that he was one of the greatest Basketballplayer of all time so show some more respect.Wish him only the best!
Because of Magic's courage in disclosing that he was HIV positive, a lot of the misunderstandings about AIDS were made clear - that you didn't have to be a gay man, a hemophiliac or from Haiti to be infected. He also proved that HIV positive people didn't necessarily look sick. He did a lot to make people practice safe sex.
I was very young back then. Can somebody tell me...the weeks and months leading up to this announcement, was it ever speculated or rumored that he was retiring due to having HIV....or was this literally an "out of the blue" press conference/announcement?
THIRTY YEARS! Magic is still here! 🙏
Amazing how well he carrys himself in this absolutely terrifying moment! This is the definition of composure.
I've seen my father cry twice in my lifetime. When his pops died and when this man retired.
He meant a lot to the city of LA.
My ur grandpa forever rest in peace 🙏🙏🙏😢😢
@@ashvinvaradaraju3407 u edited this and you still didn't get it right

I was 1 year out of UT when this came on, I called my friend and we watched it live as I taped it.
When I was 11, this scared me to death! He was an influence on me and he did a great thing by coming out.

he did say he planned on staying around for a long time...and he did.Go magic..u spoke it into being.

he planned to be here for a long time and we still have him
toronto loves THE MAGIC
when magic made this announcement, pretty everyone REMEMBERED where they were and what they were doing at the time.
20 YEARS GONE BY SO FAST
It feels strange - why exactly did this have to be a media spectacle with flashbulbs and hive of reporters?
because he was a nba superstar
Nba superstar and bunch of people literally dont have anything better to do for most of their life but talk about basketball players
How many politicians these days can handle a press conference like Magic Johnson? I've seen this video many times in the last two decades but I just realized that lately. I don't remember him ever reading a paper for a speech.
Happy 30th anniversary.
Awww man. I know it must've hurt magic totally. You can see it in his eyes.
this was uploaded on my birthday
So? What a useless comment. 8 years and nothing. Uploaded on your birthday? Ok.. congratulations?
@AMB64Productions I think he meant Magic Johnson, who was a point guard
Poor guy. At least he's considered the greatest point guard of all time.
You know when i see this i think of Al Pacino's speech in that football based movie whatever it was called. Thats an epic press conference there.
The goat him self 🐐
I just saw him on the Olympics. He said that when they called him to join the Olympic Dream Team after he announced it, that's when he realized that he could beat HIV! Now that's a fighter!

Back when people where cool and level headed. They could just handle business without hysteria. (Social media frenzy)
@joker187
it happen In 1991 I meant to say 20 yrs was so fast yesterday meaning 1991
This is so sad. Magic Johnson was the best, imo.
