Bocklin painted liminal spaces 200 years before it was cool

This painting had some almost supernatural power to mesermize the observer!

The first time I saw this painting, I was struck by the power it radiated. I wanted to visit and explore that place, although it is scary to realize ...you must be dead.
I posted the photo on my FB page and people asked me, "are you depressed or suicidal"?
Apparently it makes people so uncomfortable that they ask the wrong questions. Or they have no idea what this masterpiece is about?

4:10 i remember seeing the opening to Silent Hill paying homage to this painting, though i didn't know it was then. but it's an image that gets stuck in the back of your conscience for a while, almost like you're seeing something you shouldn't.

I gotta say, there's something incredibly haunting about the painting in 4:32.

Rachminoff apparently only ever got to see a black and white version of the painting and said he was surprised upon seeing it in color. It wasnt what he expected so maybe his composition would've been different had he been presented with the true painting! Just something interesting i learned today.

Excellent review/overview. Brilliant how you illustrate certain points referencing other artists. I came here because I wanted to make a feature on the painting myself. But rest assured, my take will be a bit different. Cheers man

Ramon Tuynman - Thanks! I'm eager to see your take. It doesn't seem to get talked about much in the 21st century.

i built an Isle of the Dead, based on the painting, in my Minecraft world in a random location far from my base and left it there without noting where it was. Minecraft worlds are larger than the Earth. I'll probably never see it again but like knowing it exists somewhere. The hardest part was deciding what was inside those burial chambers. I couldn't just let it be nothing.

Don’t know the illustrator but apart from that I am with 100%. Die Toteninsel is the ultimate painting ever produced.

    A mesmerizing painting.
I prefer the darker versions though, especially "New York".

I saw this painting in my dream multiple times, especially when I was young, the thing is when I was young, I have never seen the painting and yet my dream looked exactly liked this, the way I found out was I found this painting in a dictionary in school, so it felt like life wanted to tell me something, I tried investigating what the meaning of this painting is yet I can’t understand, it just looks like a portrait basically.
Tho I’ll tell you what I saw in my dream (foggy memory so might not remember some things),
I was young, I was on the boat with that guy with the white cloak, except it was a black cloak, he drove the boat to the island, he was either behind me or infront of me I don’t remember, but I couldn’t see his face, when I try looking backwards to see more where i was, I couldn’t, it felt like darkness and my head would try to turn but something was forcing my head to not, the water also felt like solid floor, but a floor that can flow, basically water but it didn’t feel deep. I felt like I was coming to death, or I was already in death, and that I was going to complete death. After that guy in the black cloak drove me to the island, he disappear, I don’t remember how he disappear but my mind didn’t think of him. The place was dark, it was almost looked like the evening about to turn night while it was misty. There were windows but inside the windows there were just the wall. There suddently also 2 children that were dark, not their skin but everything, they looked like a living shadow that could stand still and be 3D, so there were 3 children. When I was in there I didn’t think of me, I thought of the harmony inside, harmony because we were dancing on the island, and I think we were playing ball, as in passing the balls while going in circles dancing almost like the fandango dance. After suddently 2 more children joined, and we danced even faster, and it felt like we were doing something that would makes us go somewhere or make something, we were so concentrated, well I was that I didn’t think or saw the environment around. I heard some children laugh while doing, some quiet like me. And than I woke up, and years later I realized it was a painting that place
