Tegan's departure is among the best because of how simple yet devastatingly blunt her reasons are. No falling in love, no helping out an alien society, she's just had enough of the death and destruction, and the Daleks' bloodbath was the last straw. It's bleak but very powerful. That ending and The Doctor's tense faceoff with Davros are two major high points from this story.

I love Tegan’s departure, it’s probably one of the most realistic exits for a companion. Tegan experienced so much death over her run, I’m not surprised it stopped being fun for her.

Indeed, and let's not forget that she got involved with the Doctor (Four) by accident, she didn't initially choose to travel with him. Which gives credence to her wanting to stay on earth at this point.

@ Yeah, 3 or 4 serials later. I think her patience was obviously just starting to wear thin in The Awakening what with all that going on with her uncle. And had this one not killed an army’s worth of guest cast, she may have had a bit more patience left to last a few more adventures. This one just exhausted it all in one go.
(And TBH, who can blame her! Just being a character in this one alone would result in most people going through it being sectioned!)

I watched Five on New Jersey public television, which used to show "Whovies" in the '80s. (We got to see "The Five Doctors" before the Brits, so we knew Five was coming.) A teen back then, I thought he was weak (y'see, in America back then, #TomBaker was our *first and only* Doctor) but now I see he's just a vulnerable bloke. :) Which is interesting :)

@@IsiahBradley It was a deliberate choice to make the Fifth Doctor vulnerable and flawed - really what else could they have done? By the end of Tom's run the Doctor was too large, too dominant, essentially over-powered. The problem is that we do all too easily - as you acknowledge you did - conflate vulnerable / flawed with weak. A bigger problem is that they didn't usually have good enough writers to walk that tightrope. Without getting into spoilers, I'd just argue that at the very end of his run Five proved that however flawed and vulnerable he was, he was far from weak...

When the Doctor admits he intends to kill Davros and Tegan says it’s murder, you can almost feel a bit of her faith in the goodness of the Doctor dying and although he doesn’t go through with it, her walk out hits him hard. The fact he is left reflecting on why he left Gallifrey is very powerful to me. He’s aware that fighting evil is tainting him. He says he must change his ways but we know he can’t, he will always fight evil. And that’s why it’s my favourite story. Vey haunting and very dark.

Agree so much with your feelings. I love Eric Saward’s mature complex adult stories that are bleak and shades of grey. V gritty. Enjoying your reactions, as I’ve enjoyed all of your reactions, but especially with Five and Tegan and this era, which is much maligned by fandom. This was my young adult Who growing up and I adore it. So I’m thrilled you get it as you do. Tegan rocks. I think she’s probably the most accurate depiction of someone pulled into that world and not a one note companion. Adore her. A lot of fans don’t get the bigger and more truthful picture.

As you say there's very little outright dislike and there's obviously some well-regarded stories but attention always seems to be elsewhere and it's a shame because there's so, so much interesting material there. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think Peter was the first "modern" Doctor. What I mean by that is that his approach to the role is closer to how the NuWho Doctors have played the role than most of the classic era Doctors who were to some extent playing exaggerated versions of themselves. He's "my" Doctor because he came in just as I became properly aware of the show, but I'd like to think he'd always have been a favourite. He showed us that the Doctor might be an alien, but he's in some ways more human than any of us.

To this point in 5's run, it's worth noting how the companions involved with him _haven't_ had the generally better time of things that most prior companions had: Adric died, Nyssa let off for the presumed rest of her life to help seriously ill people on (setting aside the audio stories that mitigate that -- only going with televised stories), and now Tegan leaving on the verge of a nervous breakdown (and justifiably so). This was, in that regard, a dark era for DW companions... but that also leant a degree of emotion/credibility to things that didn't often exist up to this point, either.

Folks have pointed out that Genesis can be considered the first battle of the Time War, with the Time Lords essentially declaring war on the Daleks by dispatching the Doctor to avert their creation. In that case Resurrection shows the next stage of the war with the Daleks looking to strike back at the Time Lords directly. Hence also why it's such a brutal story, it's literally as Davros says, a universal war.

This story was originally planned to close out the previous season, until industrial action forced the recording dates to be filled with finishing "Terminus". "Resurrection of the Daleks" was called "Warhead" at that point, and although the plot remained pretty much the same, Kamelion played a large role which led to the duplication aspect of the story. I do remember watching this tale for the first time and feeling shocked over how relentlessly grim it turned out to be. Up until that point, our PBS never aired the surviving William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton serials, and I became incredibly excited seeing the brief clips during The Doctor's memory drain sequence. It's a shame Leela was omitted!
Tegan's exit is reminiscent of Victoria's, as she too was sick of all the death and disaster happening wherever and whenever the TARDIS brought them. It's incredibly well done, although I do wish Tegan had been afforded more to do in her last story. Janet Fielding worked herself up for the goodbye scene by kicking boxes in the studio much to the concern of the production team!

Resurrection of the Daleks had a higher kill count than The Terminator, just to put into perspective how dark this story is. Eric Saward always has dark stories, with the exception of his first story, The Visitation. But from Earthshock onwards, all of his stories are dark ones. And what about the Peter Davison era as a whole. It doesn't seem like it, but if you actually think about it, his era was just as dark as the early Tom Baker era and Colin Baker era. Stories like Kinda, Earthshock, Snakedance, Terminus, Warriors of the Deep, Resurrection of the Daleks, and his finale are the best examples of this. And what about his companies - Adric died, Nyssa had her planet and people destroyed with her father killed and his body taken over by the Master (they should've explored her trauma from that, but they never did in the show apart from a small moment in Logopolis) and then she contracts a deadly disease and stays on Terminus, Tegan has her aunt killed, gets uprooted from her home to a mysterious planet with people she doesn't even know, gets possessed by the Mara not once but twice, and as for Turlough, he's exiled to a planet he doesn't like, gets under the influence of the Black Guardian who tries to force him to commit cold-blooded murder, and then after all that, his final story. The Peter Davison era is a lot bleeker than people give it credit for.

If you remember, Dalek duplicates were actually introduced way back in the 1st Doctor story "The Chase", when the Daleks succeeded in creating a duplicate of the Doctor. The duplicate 1st Doctor didn't last long, but he was there.

This story was extremely controversial when it came out. They caught a lot of criticism because of how violent the story was. It was considered way too violent. Literally, everyone, except the main cast and Lytton, dies in the story. Also, as you noted, even The Doctor picks up a gun to do violence, which is unheard of. Then Tegan's departure, being unable to deal with the reality of what happened, is heartbreaking.

Much like Freema Ageyman, Janet Fielding was not given the credit she deserved for her portrayal of Tegan, at least at the time. To be fair, Tegan was a bit, erm, difficult to begin with, though some would say she had a reason to be so acerbic. What sold me was finding out that she was working behind the scenes to change the BBC. During the story Four to Doomsday, Janet made sure that the Aborigines in the story were given lines of real native Australian dialect, rather than the gibberish that was originally scripted. That Tegan was said by Sarah Jane to be fighting for Aborigine rights at the end of season four of the SJA was just the icing on the cake.

I met Peter Davison at a convention some years ago. A friend of mine was with us and he asked Peter to sign a poster for his sister with "Brave heart" and I saw him have a very human moment when he realised that was probably because she was ill (she was - cancer - now over a decade in remission but freshly diagnosed at the time). In that one moment I saw the real compassion of the man, but also an understandable undercurrent of "I hate it when this happens....".
He brightened up a bit when he spoke to me. I told him I used to get in trouble at school because I liked to keep my coat open and have my hands in my trouser pockets so I could pretend I was the Fifth Doctor. He told me a lovely story about having recently seen an old TV show he did when he was very young. He'd found it a painful watch because the character was wearing trousers with no pockets and all Peter could see of his performance that he had no idea what to do with his hands. He later did a Q and A where he told a very funny story about how when the first episode of All Creatures Great and Small aired he spent ages walking up and down his local High Street hoping someone would recognise him. Genuinely lovely man.

When I first saw this Dalek serial, I was aged 15 and I later got it on vhs and now dvd and it is one story I seldom watch and the body count is very high and Davros was to be killed off and replaced with the Dalek Emperor seen in the 60s TV comic Century 21 which did not feature the Dr, his comapnions or his TARDIS. The supreme leader of the Daleks, was a gold Emperor Dalek who was short in stature and squat shaped like Davros and the deputy was the black Dalek Supreme. I also liked the flashback sequence, even though Leela was missed out and also the scene with Davros and the Doctor was weird because we the Dr Who fans knew the Doctor could not when pointing a gun at Davros go through with killing the evil Dalek creator. The black Dalek Supreme with white, spheres in this story, was awesome and when he appeared on the TARDIS scanner telling the Doctor and co he had not won was funny. I think at that point the Black Dalek, was in the time corridor and not on the Dalek ship which got blown up .

Resurrection is absolutely crackling with ideas and plot lines but I feel like Saward then struggled with how to neatly tie the plot threads together. Also the studio direction just seems a little lacklustre in comparison to the location shoots (which brilliantly depicts just how much of a run-down shithole the East End docks were at the time).
Matthew Robinson (director) and Eric Saward (writer/script editor) would both do much better on their next serials.
Eric Saward also did the next Dalek story and that capitalised on the failures of this one. There are still loads of plot threads running through it but not so many that things are still left unresolved and the direction (with a different director, though) is much moodier and the style seems to match both on location and studio scenes.

Exciting again although part 2 is like an extended shooting range (it becomes confusing who wants to kill who) and throws ideas at you which are never developed whilst Styles takes half an episode to set the self destruct and Stein takes half an episode to be wired into the archive clip-draining machine. But Tegan's departure is superb and arguably Eric Saward's finest hour. Frankly Tegan has been ignored, sidelined, patronised, mocked and ungraciously tolerated by the Doctor from day one. Davision's portrayal even hints he doesn't even like her that much (the end of Arc of Infinity). Duly he is so wrapped up in this adventure he fails to see the fatal blow the carnage delivers to Tegan's morale. She's rightly appalled by what her life now consists of ('It's stopped being fun Doctor'). The Doctor is genuinely mortified by her reaction but is far too late to do anything about it ('No don't leave not like this!') Tragic, real and a million miles from the cosiness of Who today. Janet Fielding's successor sat in on the studio recordings for that scene and felt it was not dramatic enough. I disagree. It was perfect. Reactionary and very Tegan and the the ultimate pay-off consequence of all the violence

When Twitch (of all platforms) chose to run a Dr Who marathon a few years back - attracting fans, cynics and the merely curious along the way - one person in the chat spent the whole of 'Resurrection...' totting up how many people get killed. It's long been a statistic lazily thrown around that this story has a higher body count than 'The Terminator' (which wasn't even released until that October), but there's an awfully large number of people being shot or blown up or strangled or disfigured in this one. It might have been an attempt to look 'adult' or 'cool' or 'hard' in order to win back an increasingly disaffected young audience, but the times they were a-changin'....

The most ludicrous part of the script is having the Daleks wanting the Doctor and his companions duplicated and returned to Gallifrey to kill the High Council! Why? With all that was going on at the time, you would have thought the Daleks had had enough to contend with, what with dealing with a virus that was killing them, as well as dealing with opposition Daleks who wanted them dead! Better just to put that idea on the back burner for awhile and concentrate on the matter that was currently facing them.
Of course Saward never explains why the Daleks want the duplicate Doctor and his companions to kill the High Council, so I guess it’s ok if they just do! It’s as if Saward came up with the duplicate story just so JNT could show a companion flashback! And how the hell did the production team miss Leela off the flashback sequence?
One thing I really hated (probably above everything else I disliked) was the Doctor being prepared to willingly kill Davros. We all know the Doctor only kills in self defence, or if his companions or others with him are in mortal danger, but this to me was way out of character for the Doctor, and in particular for five himself, to be prepared to kill someone in such a cold bloodied fashion as this. Sorry, but it just didn’t sit right with me.
I also never understood why all this death and destruction was the catalyst for Tegan to leave the Doctor! She lost her Aunt to the Master in her first story, saw her companion Adric blown up in Earthshock (another high body count story written by Saward) and was witness to a human massacre in Warriors of the Deep! Oh, and she was twice possessed by the Mara - and it’s only now that she wants to leave?
I thought her comment to the Doctor, “It’s stopped being fun,” was a ridiculous reason to leave him (based on what she’d seen in the previous stories I’ve mentioned), and I think Saward and JNT hadn’t really thought of a suitable reason for Tegan to leave, especially as this story was meant to close season 20, and Tegan would still have been a companion going into “The Five Doctors.” Now, because this story was held back to the next season (season 21), it was time for Tegan to leave so Saward had to tack on her departure at the end of one of the stories, and chose his own script to give her a ridiculous reason for her to go. IMO it was a poor way to write her out!
In the years following Resurrection’s original transmission, Eric Saward has openly criticised the story, blaming himself for delivering scripts which he felt were under par and did the Daleks a disservice. I would wholeheartedly agree with him on those observations.
Saward did redeem himself the following season by following up this hopeless mess with the sublime and brilliant Revelation of the Daleks. So in that respect for Saward, there was a decent ‘resurrection’ of sorts for him!

Where Dr Who really started getting way too violent, it's a great story but even the 5th Doctor is toting a pistol and blowing up Daleks.
