Thank you VERY much, Miguel, for doing this reaction. It truly is (as are all of the Amy Lee songs I've heard--whether or not Dan has sung them) beautiful and purposeful (which is why Dan DOES sing them).
As I was listening to your great reaction, even though I've listened to this song many times before, I decided to do a search for the meaning of the song, as told by Amy. I did that before, with "Bring Me to Life," and it MADE the song for me. It's the same with this one. I had a feeling it was RELATED to "Bring Me to Life," and since I already knew the meaning of THAT song, I was pretty sure what I was going to find, which panned out just as I thought it would.
If you do this exact search: Going Under - The Evanescence Reference ... in the sites that get displayed (no matter what search engine you use), there will be a page with that title, that tells you why Amy wrote the song, and what it's about (in her own words).
Once you know about the purpose of the song, it makes a lot of difference to the way you listen. At least it did for me, and still does. There are, of course, many underlying situations that play into the ultimate purpose. Amy was writing about her OWN experiences.
I would urge you to go find that reference, and if you'd like more information about "Bring Me to Life," you can substitute that title into the original search.
Also, there is something that we already know about Dan (which is very similar with Amy): Dan is ALWAYS looking for ways to minister to those who have gone through or are going through depression, repression, anger, sorrow, hurt, or imprisonment of any type.
This is just one of Dan's song covers from a songwriter who also has that mission. There are HUGE numbers of original metal songs that were (and still are being) written by people who want the public to see what people (all over the world) are going through (in many different ways and situations), and telling the REAL stories in their lyrics. Though Dan loves the music (and embroiders on it), it's the purpose of the song that is largely important to him. For instance, the outro for his version of "More Than Words" tells about what message came through the song for HIM, that made him want to sing it for everyone else"
PS--My first song to hear today was (for about the 100th time): "My Heart Will Go On" (Dan's version of course).
