    This is really the video that finally helped me make good gesture drawings, every other video was too unspecific and just made me more confused, but this video finally allowed me to make more dynamic looking poses
    Thank you so much

    When it comes to quick poses, this is probably the best video on the subject, because it gives a good beginner level place to start from.

    Thanks a lot for this video. I've watched a dozen or more gesture videos on youtube, but every single one of them did gesture in a different way. They all emphasize that simplicity is needed and not to focus on building forms. But then all the videos have the artist building forms in one way or another. So when I went to do my drawings, I felt like I was failing because I would just stick to wire frame and avoid the forms. It's great to see that I was doing it correctly according to someones method.

    as someone who's been doing this for a couple of months, i can assure you that everything he said is true, this's legitimately the best way of learning anatomy (to me at least) i'm surprised how well it actually works

    This made my brain shift and suddenly I get it now. After struggling for so long with stiff and scribbly figures I finally get it.

    Thank you, banged my head against my keyboard following countless methods.
    I have Andrew Loomis's book on figure drawing, but it's more complex than what you've shown here; I supposed I should just focus on the stick figure and then build myself up a bit.

    how do you improve at proportions and gesture at the same time? proportions have been my biggest problem all my life.

    • @barbiesinparadise
      @barbiesinparadise 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I'm personally not sure how that would work, but I'd recommend getting a firm grip on proportions first, and then try to translate that to your gesture drawings

      If you memorize and practice the human proportions and train your eye with measuring and drawing still lifes or busts you will do a lot better

      I usually see each part of a limb such as the arm to be about the same length of the head. And from there the length of the arm would be the same size of the forearm. I assume the length of the legs are the same as the a whole arm.

    • @anam00090
      @anam00090 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I know this is an old comment but for me personally two things have helped - 1. studying basic concepts of anatomy - to see average proportions of human figure and draw it out multiple times (front and back), so my hand and eyes get used to seeing what should "feel right" and then 2. practicing gesture drawing by redrawing the same pose multiple times. Say you try a 30-second pose. You time it every time, pause and look at the result, evaluate what's wrong - do it again. And again. And again, till it feels right and your hand has grasped the rhythm. Eventually the proportions you see and what you draw will line up... Through practice. But learning proportions first helps with the observation, your eye sees and dissects the pose faster once you get the hang of it.

      Not sure how much I can describe on here without a picture, but imagine a picture of a guy punching into the camera at a slight angle so you can still see most of his arm.
      Make 3 (or more) landmarks starting with the largest one which in this case is the fist. You name that Point A (for clarity)
      Then you find the 2nd largest one which would probably his shoulder, and block that out with a circle or w/e shape you want. Point B.
      Lastly you find point C which is easily found between point and point B which is the elbow.
      Finally you join them all up in a logical fashion.
      It won't work on the first try, but trust me it works.

  • @ukpage7721

    Misleading! Use the word illustration in your title. Make it clear you are not talking about life drawing. There may be something here that is helpful to commercial artists/illustrators in constructing bland, generic figures but at no point in this video does it discuss gesture drawing. The method depicted in this video is, in fact, antithetical to gesture drawing in nearly every way. Gesture drawing is spontaneous, intuitive, free, and especially dynamic! None of that is here. Indeed "method" is not a word that is very compatible with gesture. The video depicts an analytical, step by step process not an intuitive free, dynamic process. I noticed only one thing here that is helpful in understanding gesture, seeing through the form which is mentioned toward the end. Otherwise, you will never understand gesture drawing by watching this video. Putting it mildly, Nicolaides the original authority on gesture drawing would not approve this video. If you are actually interested in gesture the best way to learn it remains reading the sections about it in his book, "The Natural Way to Draw. I've taught drawing at the college level for 26 years. I've searched and searched for helpful videos on gesture to show my drawing students. I have found one and only one, th-cam.com/video/_uQMsJqqXeo/w-d-xo.html. Skip this video and watch that one if your interest is actually gesture drawing. Most of my time searching has been wasted on videos like this. Some means that would clearly distinguish the illustration videos from the fine art videos would certainly be helpful to me.

      Imagine stating that someone's method of doing gesture drawing - a method that is inherently really up to interpretation, free, and open - is wrong and that your method that you like is the only right one lol

      @@lshwadchuck5643 I don't know what you're on about bud, this is a helpful framework for solving problems and figuring out the anatomy of a figure in a photo. Nobody said this was a replacement for "real" life drawing, whatever that is.
