Much appreciate this and all of your vids. It never occurred to me to just pull away a bit from the thin material but keep the same 45 degree angle. I've been changing my angle and pointing my gun more toward the thick material and less towards the thin. I'll definitely give your method a try.

Man I really can appreciate how well u explain it. It makes perfect sense now i see it. I have had a little small couple brackets I had to make for my jeep and was having problems. I've never had to do it since everything is usually the same thickness I've had in the past. Thanks I'm a new subscriber.

Run the small rod diameter on the lower amp settings, increase your rod angle drastically (play with this a little until you get comfortable) travel kinda fast. Just a few things that will help.

You’ll find a few vids on my channel where I do this. I agree with DOGLEG’s tips and would just add that changing your polarity to electrode negative can help sometimes.

Cool stuff would just like mention as a seasoned welder guys when the horizontal is the thin stuff its a whole different beast be careful when you end the weld starting it and running it is okay but if your not careful on terminating the weld you will get undercut. Normally I drop a it back a tiny bit more in this situation eg 10 to 10mm ill blast 270-280 amps all the way but 10mm to 3mm ill put about 245-255 if I can stand it upright thick at the bottom but if the 3mm is horizontal I'll blast it about 240 amps but make sure the volts are above 26

    Hi. A very informative video.
I’m looking to weld a rectangular 2mm wall box section frame to a bicycle head set after I have ground off the exiting frame that is connected to it.
If I leave the existing weld in place tided and ground to 1mm thick so that the wall thickness of 1mm is now 2mm and equal to the box section would this be ok so I could weld centrally and avoid have to weld offset as explained in your video. I ask as I’m OK at welding equal thickness materials but not so good at welding different thickness materials as shown.
    Thanks in advance.

Can you do the same thing with flux core?

  • @bobbo9549
    @bobbo9549 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Tim, great tips in the video.
As an amateur I have enough trouble keeping a straight line when butting two tubes to form a tee. The bicycle head set I’m welding is 1mm and the main tube is 2mm. I’m told if I insert a spare section of 1mm tube snuggly into the 1mm tube I’m welding this will form a heat sink and reduce the likelihood of me blowing through the 1mm tube if welding on a setting for 2mm steel when keeping the torch centrally positioned between both pieces.
Is this correct or wishful thinking. Someone said place a damp rag packed into the thinner tube will also dissipate the excess heat.
    Thanks,
    Bob.

So obviously the bolt is fairly thick so how did you determine the settings based on the bolt size? Thanks

sir how to avoid a cold start at the weld at the start and lack of fusion at the end of the weld. I am trying to join a 1.2mm mild steel sheet to an 8mm mild steel sheet..the path of the welding is half the shape of a rectangle due to the welding path I have to make this weld in two steps from right to center and left to center.

Have you used 25’ thicker extension cord for outside flux welding?
I believe the settings would have to go lower than Chart I was having problem with it burning threw.

If I ever weld Thinner to thicker steel I only use no gas flux cored wire with the shroud removed as it not needed with gas wire..I always apply heat to the thick steel and use the weld pool from the thick steel to melt the Thinner steel so they melt together..any one with common sense would know this technique..I'm no expert welder but common sense prevails..yours sincerely from the old qeer corrupt uk 🇬🇧
