    It's an awesome little lens and I cannot stop getting surprised every time I get an amazingly sharp image at times when I'm not expecting it. I bought it for my street shooting on the budget for my X-E3. The footprint of this combo is just right for the job.

    I have their 50mm all (manual) for my Sony A7iii. Great lens too. Set the aperture and shutter speed, then let the camera sort out the ISO. Range focusing is perfect for street photography. You can forget about the camera and concentrate on the shot.

    Literally the best value photographic purchase I've ever made. It's short comings are the vignette which can be minimised by stopping down or eliminated in post, easily enough. The flaring is common in a lot of cheap Chinese lenses for sure. You can see the flaring in the view finder/rear lcd and recompose to minimise or eliminate it or even use it artistically if you want. Once you are aware of its shortcomings it can produce excellent images which are sharp edge to edge and have a really nice colour rendition. I even prefer to use this lens to use this lens over the highly rated Fujinon XC 35mm f2 on occasion. I have taken test shots at similar apertures and the TT Artisans has superior edge sharpness when stopped down a bit.

    This is a lens for everyone using APS-C cameras. If you’re a Fuji owner, I think it’s a lens you just have to pick up. When compared directly to the Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8, I found this lens to be better overall, sans weather sealing. If this lens had weather sealing, then I would honestly see no reason to own the Fuji version. I personally didn’t like that lens because of the significantly higher amount of focus breathing and seemingly shorter minimum focusing distance. I know that on paper they claim they’re the same, but I always had trouble taking photos of things in my hands on the Fuji lens and I never had a problem with this lens. Great video. You’re extremely well spoken and articulate.

    Just for kicks I compared portrait shots taken in low light with the TTArtisans at f2.8 on a Fuji with the Nikon 40 f2 and the 35 f1.8 taken at f4 on the Nikon Zf for similar depth of field. I was blown away that the TTArtisans image was far and away sharper with good contrast. It was not even close.

    The quality of products coming out of China has improved drastically over the last 15 years. (In part due to corporate espionage it should be said.) I first noticed this with Fender and Squire guitars built in China. You can buy an excellent electric guitar made in China for $450. That wasn’t the case in the early 2000s. I own the Viltrox 75mm f/1.2. Aside from the minimum focusing distance, which is a bit crap, everything else about the lens is on par with the Fujifilm 56mm f/1.2. There are some complaints about the sun stars and flaring with the Viltrox but for the price I think that can be overlooked for most users. I’ve never owned a TTArtisan lens but at $150 there’s almost no reason not to give it a try.

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree. I mean on a scale of 1-10, it gets 5 bonus points for being cheap, small, and having autofocus. It’s actually one of my favourite lenses right now.

  • @zeissiez
    @zeissiez ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have a tiny TTArtisan 32 F2.8 full frame lens for my Nikon Z7 for $100, I was shocked that this lens is so sharp, not just in the centre, but right to the corners, wide open. The only downside is lens flare against light sources, which is quite severe. I actually like the slightly lower contrast of these cheap lenses, because I think modern lenses are too contrasty, especially in bright sunny day, which leads to blown highlights and dead shadows, these lenses produce images which look more natural to me, and also give me more headroom shall I need to do post-processing.

    Hey Mark! Super interesting lens, I wonder if they'll bother making it in a Canon M mount at this point, I hope they do.
    Off topic question for you, I have heard that one of the "problems" with the Canon M6 Mark II is that a lot of the M mount lenses lack the ability to fully resolve all the megapixels on that sensor. Do you think the Viltrox primes are "enough lens" for that sensor, or should I invest in the Sigma primes, or another option entirely?

Your in depth but simple way of explaining is extremely helpful! I actually bought the sigma 16mm alt you suggested from this same company. This is 27mm f2.8, I'm not sure it's a cheaper alternative to the Sigma 16mm f1.4. Canon's own 22mm f/2 would be closer than this lens. If this lens was 16mm even at f2.8 I'd buy it.

    • @thestellarelite
      @thestellarelite ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GrantMcWilliams Oh I think my comment was unclear there's another video of Mark's where he talks about a 17mm f1.4 (or close to this can't remember exact specs) from the same company that I'm referring to. I hope they make one of these 27mm for canon as well I'm in the beginner low budget phase and I like what this manufacturer is doing. I'm literally waiting impatiently for my 17mm to arrive now cannot wait to play!

    • @GrantMcWilliams
      @GrantMcWilliams ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thestellarelite Yes, I think they have a 17 mm f1.4 manual focus for EF-M but I'd like to have an AF version. The painful reality is all lens manufacturers are going to dump EF-M now that the mount is dead. I really wanted Sigma's short zoom that just came out for Fuji and Sony. If I had that I would probably just keep using my M6II until it finally died but currently I don't have what I want.

    • @thestellarelite
      @thestellarelite ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GrantMcWilliams I've now tested it out and it does exactly what I wanted which was more DoF background blur for my videos without spending $800+. Great little lens nice build. The manual focus is difficult took a lot of testing but I managed. When you say the mount is dead do you mean it's just too old and no one is developing for it anymore?

    • @GrantMcWilliams
      @GrantMcWilliams ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thestellarelite Not too old, just abandoned. I was hoping third parties would jump in and release some lenses for the EF-M market as soon as Canon abandoned it but I'm fairly sure at this point that that will not happen. Even third parties want nothing to do with it since new cameras aren't being built. Since there are no new cameras the market will shrink as people move on or cameras die and nobody wants to be producing products for a market that only has one way to go.
      It's very sad for me because Canon can't make an M6II replacement because the lenses will always be much larger. Maybe they could get close with a camera body with RF mount but not an RF lens. Fuji could do it but they spend a lot of time just making weird cameras that don't seem to have any direction (WTH do I care about an LCD showing the label from a film box from the 80's?). Sony does make a camera that fits into the M6II market and the lenses are small but I've had enough Sony's to know that isn't the direction I want to go. So, I wait and keep using my EF-M cameras. I would really like to have a fast, short zoom though. If I had that I'd keep it for the foreseeable future.

  • @vonPeter_
    @vonPeter_ 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    On Fujifilm there is an option to buy a used XF 27mm f/2.8 lens for a few more dollars. That is much-much better option, especially the lens coating is far more advanced. I was curious about the TTArtisan version because the XF 27mm f/2.8 (Mark I) doesn't offer an aperture ring, but the flare resistance is horrible (or non exists at all). I really love lens flare as a creative option but the TTArtisan gives an ugly flare that reminds me a dirty phone camera. I hope they are working on a Mark II version with better front element coating.

      @@markwiemels Not dirt cheap in my country standards, but still much cheaper than anything else AF for Sony E.

    The flares around the street light were amazing, best flares ever. I think it adds to the experience and does not take away. The overdone too high contrast of modern lenses and the over-sharpening is a huge turn-off for me. In the beginning I was amazed to have such high contrast and ultra-sharpness As the novelty wore off I'm more than annoyed by the fake over-photoshopped look the new lenses with the newest sensors are prone to give. In best case the shots look like flattened oil paintings, and worse cases appear as overdone AI creations that never saw the light of the day. No wonder AI photography has started scoring points as occasionally more believable than modern sensor/lens shots.

    This is cool, and maybe the prices have changed since the video was posted, but... there are currently five auto-focus lenses cheaper than this for the Micro 4/3 system. None come with the USB dock/back-cap thing, though, so that's pretty awesome.
    Edit: it's cheaper on their site, so there's only three lenses cheaper on B&H: Yongnuo 25 and 42.5 f/1.7 lenses, and Olympus 40-150/4-5.6

  • @PyroPenaloza
    @PyroPenaloza 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Big question...you and other reviewers mention that the 28mm would be a 35-40ish equivalent in full frame, but it IS aps-c, so...whats up with that? I do understand the difference between APS-C and FF, but it would still behave like a 28 for the APS-C, correct? I ask this because currently, I'm using the F mount AF-S DX 35mm 1.8 with adapter, but wanted to buy a wider focal length. The 35mm is 35mm in my Nikon Z fc, so this TTArtisan would be a 28mm as well...right?? Sorry if the question is dumb but I'm getting quite confused with how you explain it, and if it's going to produce images with a similar focal length to my AF-S DX 35mm, then there's no point in getting it...right? Correct me if I'm wrong, please 😵‍💫

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The 28mm will be 28mm, your 35mm is 35mm. The sensor of a full frame camera captures a wider image, but when someone says the it's a 28mm ASP-C lens that does not mean they have done any calculation for the crop factor. For example a 28mm FF lens and 28mm APS-C lens, will have the same FOV on your camera.

Speaking of Japanese and English, how many words moved in the other direction without keeping their original pronunciation? Anyway, I understand and sometimes I'm tempted to share that pet peeve, but thinking of it this way helps me not to worry about it so much, so I thought I'd share.

    Thanks for the review. Love your channel! I'm confused by the claim that this lens is suitable for both full-frame and APC-C on the Sony E-Mount. If it's designed for APS-C at 27mm then it will not work on full frame because it would show really severe vegetating. Sorry, I think you cover this... honestly, I haven't watched this video yet because I found it late at night. I'll watch it tomorrow.

      @sssdeecee ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markwiemels Yes. I understand that, but both the Amazon description and their official website claim that it is designed for both APS-C and full-frame Sony cameras. For brevity, I will just repeat the Amazon title, "TTArtisan AF 27mm F2.8 Auto Focus Lens APS-C Full-Frame Large-Aperture Wide Angle Lens for Sony E-Mount Cameras A6500 A6300 A6100 A9 A7RⅣ A7RⅢ A7Ⅲ A7RⅡ A7Ⅱ A7S A7R".
      I'd love to try this lens out on my Sony A7R II, but it's almost certainly going to show severe vignetting (vegetating??) Where did that spell-check mistake come from? LOL
      It would make more sense if the lens was designed for full-frame at 27mm and works as a 40mm on APS-C. That, I could understand. It's just not possible to go the other direction... APS-C -> full-frame. Life was so much easier before I upgraded to a full-frame digital camera. LOL
      I contacted the manufacturer about their confusing claim.

    • @arsenalmob
      @arsenalmob ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @sssdeecee I do believe you're overthinking it a bit dude lol. ALL APS-C lenses can work full frame as long as it's the the same mount.
      Should you use them on your full frame is a totally different question entirely. With the extra power a full frame has, why settle for an APS-C lens when you can get something designed to take advantage of the better sensors?
