- 100 years ago, Communists took power in Russia. The October Revolution in 1917 marks the start of suffering of Christians in Russia. They were persecuted and murdered. The new regime regime even converted monasteries like the Novospassky monastery in Moscow into where thousands of prisoners were tortured and shot. In this interview, Bishop Sava remembers the times of persecution and explains why Christendom is so important for Russia today. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, more than 30,000 churches were built or re-opened. Today, most Russians are confessed Christians. Miodrag Soric reports from Moscow.

Also cant remember the timescales of it, i know the hardship of WW2 massively revived christianity in russia, I believe this increase could be seen even prior to the war though. The communists went too far by killing people for their faith (much like another man we know) that should not be acceptable in a secular state, but religion itself is going away for the better. @@proudsubhuman You are correct but I would argue that the example given here is more a case of stalinist perversion of Communist ideals then anything else. Stalin killed his own comrades for power so it is only logical for him to also kill other potential threats for his hegemony e.g. the church.
