@@dulcimoo This player is george gao, one of the best erhu virtuosos in the world, the usual trash movie violin depictions reviewed by twoset does not compare with him. (Just, as an erhu player, all the movements are perfect, no way this is fake.) -Would still love to see twoset react to it, though. He is known to play tchaikovsky and other violin pieces transposed to Erhu, including zigeunerweisen etc
A magnificent display of musicianship. This piece was written to be challenging on a western violin with four strings, playing it on an instrument with only two strings is amazing in itself, but it is played here with such expressiveness it is astounding.
Heart warming how a great work written for the 4 string violin can translate so well onto a 2 string instrument. Obviously some modifications have to be made, because triple and quadruple stopping are not possible, but what a superb musician!
The vibrating length of his D and A strings incorporate the 4 on the european viols...genius. His bow technique is extraordinary The short time i had with my 2 Erhu before they were stolen left me with one bit of certain knowledge. To do what his is doing you cannot be good You must exponential leaps and bounds beyond exceptional. This man is. The deep tone of his instrument is fantastic. Bravo maestro.
I can only imagine how emotional Tchaikovsky would be if he saw this, a piece that was once criticized unplayable now being played by people from countries he couldn't possibly fathom, on traditional instruments. And with such amazing musicianship. Thinking about that alone brings me to tears.
Behold the Heifetz of the erhu! The Tchaikovsky is very difficult on the 4-string violin it was written for, but on the erhu it borders on ET! Bravissimo, George!
If I could give a 1000 thumbs up I would, this is an impressive feat of ear training, musicianship and dexterity. Plus the erhu just sounds so good in this context. Amazing.
Ok so this is absolutely incredible. I've played the actualy Concerto on Violin with FOUR strings and this guy plays it just as well if not better. It's a terrific, yet an absolute bull of a piece. Great job!
A riveting version, the sound of this archaic instrument has something so profound and touching, a sound from the prehistory of violin, a whisper and a cry altogether, proving that the music has no boundaries and the true art is to avoid the technicalities, to bypass them or simply to make them invisible. Anyway, sir, you are as virtuous as any of the contemporary violinists. Congrats.
I'm amazed that moving the bow so close to the sound chamber produces the beautiful sound that it does. He's certainly captured the nuances of this wonderful concerto, and it must be exhausting moving the left hand over the length of the instrument.
With a civilization as old as that of the Chinese, there is much still to learn about Chinese culture, and this is truly wonderful!!!. I could listen to this all day! It would be great to bring the erhu, the violin, the cello and the double bass together in an appropriate piece of music.
watching this in 2017 my mind: whoahhhhh !? are you kidding me!? playing it on a 2 strings instrument is absoulutely harder than viloin. Great job, sir!!
Stunning. I can't approach this piece on a violin, yet Mr Gao makes this work look so effortless on a completely different instrument with technical challenges on its own. I'm a totaly neophyte to erhu but I'd love to know how to obtain one of his design. I went to Mr Gao's web site but I didn't see CDs for sale. I would absolutely buy anything he chose to publish.
I was going to try to find the right words to describe this, but you were word perfect! Even the cadenza is played with such a remarkable accuracy. Bravo indeed...
Congratulations, sir !!!!!!! Wonderful sound !!!!!!! wonderful phrasing !!!!!!!! You are not only a virtuoso but also an ARTIST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you.... To all of you listening The artist's name is GEORGE GAO...and there is plenty of information on the internet about him...and his Shahoqin Erhu....just google "Erhu Music "
two set should see this!!!
And figure out if this is fake or not.

Agree

Bravo maestro.
master piece....2 strings (erhu) still can play like 4 strings(violin)..
really cannot look down traditional musical instrument
I can only imagine how emotional Tchaikovsky would be if he saw this, a piece that was once criticized unplayable now being played by people from countries he couldn't possibly fathom, on traditional instruments. And with such amazing musicianship.
Thinking about that alone brings me to tears.
something between violin and oboe!Fantastic sound!!))
this is very, very expressive and high level interpretation, doenst matter what instrument it comes from.
this is years of dedicated practice showing
Crazy skills and such musicality!
National Treasure! Both the instrument and the musician!
Behold the Heifetz of the erhu! The Tchaikovsky is very difficult on the 4-string violin it was written for, but on the erhu it borders on ET! Bravissimo, George!
A wonderful performance with technique and artistry completely at the service of the music.
If I could give a 1000 thumbs up I would, this is an impressive feat of ear training, musicianship and dexterity. Plus the erhu just sounds so good in this context. Amazing.
Never heard this instrument before, it sounds fantastic.
Erhu, it's the counterpart of violin in Chinese instruments.
For anyone wondering, the instrument is called 韶琴 (Shaoqin), part of the Huqin family that is like an erhu but with a wider range of notes
This is so beautiful and impressive!
wooow!
AMAZING! congratulations from Spain! So Nice!
Ok so this is absolutely incredible. I've played the actualy Concerto on Violin with FOUR strings and this guy plays it just as well if not better. It's a terrific, yet an absolute bull of a piece. Great job!
The beauty and virtuosity brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for a powerfully affecting experience.
Congratulations! Amazing... AMAZING!
Greetings from Brazil!

Beautiful sound, brilliant playing.
Thank u George Gao
One of the most technically challenging pieces for violin. 10:00 and on solo...wow.
I am sure Tchaikovsky would be VERY PROUD of this.
Does it possible? I can't stop watching this video.
Thank you for posting !
Beautiful perfomance!!!
With a civilization as old as that of the Chinese, there is much still to learn about Chinese culture, and this is truly wonderful!!!. I could listen to this all day! It would be great to bring the erhu, the violin, the cello and the double bass together in an appropriate piece of music.
So since TwoSetViolin just learned to play the Erhu....are we going to get maybe Tchaikovsky on the ERHU from Eddy? 😏
2 MIL TCHAIK ON ERHU DROP
called Shahoqin Erhu
Truly a consummate artist... I was hypnotized. The best mix of Eastern and Western music I've ever heard, in 60 years of classical music study.
I give you a standing ovation for that truly amazing work into that difficult work, especially on the erhu.
I keep coming back to this video - it is absolutely stunning.

Erhu Master George Gao
Great work ! , this instrument is same an folkloric Egyption instrument called " Rababa " ..
Amazing! Wonder what Tchaikovsky himself would have thought. :)
Hey, please play Vaughan Williams' _The Lark Ascending_ also!
Hey! That is actually a good idea. That piece, for me at least, sounds very oriental and I think erhu will be suitable to play it.
Wow!So wonderful!
Fantastic👍 👍👍 👍👍👍
Incredible!!!!!!!!!!Amazing!!!!!!!!
FANTASTIC JOB!!! I keep thinking two string Erhu would be so much easier oh! hahah!
