South Korea's economy is the exact concept of techno-feudalism talked about by Yanis Varoufakis (Greek finance minister in 2015). He basically conceptualized that capitalism is long gone but we haven't realized it yet because economic shifts happen cross-generationally. He does a good job of pointing out how we, through our own human nature, reverted back to feudalism, where in which the government has become the lord (operating through subsidies), CEOs are the vassals, corporations are the fiefs, and employees are the serfs.

The entire thing was out of his control, he could not have possibly known it would end up like this, but even i would not be able to live with myself and the parents of those children may certainly not be able to forgive. Advice I got from a very experienced sailor: If you're ever on a passenger ship and something seems wrong, the crew will always tell you to remain in place.
NEVER listen to them. Always put on your life jacket and go to the deck. Don't let anyone stop you. And if the ship is listing (i.e. leaning to one side), go to the side it's leaning toward, as in the side that's closer to the water. Because the lifeboats on the other side will be useless as they'll be hanging over the hull and likely to capsize if lowered.

I lived in South Korea for two years teaching, and I can't stress enough how much it is an open secret the chaebols are the ones really running the country. Literally, everyone I would talk to about this from young to old knew that the big families were untouchable. Honestly, even just working at one of these companies is seen as a big deal in Korea, because it is understood that there are many benefits besides compensation when you are working for these companies.
As an example, I had a friend in Korea who worked at Samsung, just a mid level position, but soon after joining the company he became close friends with the head of police in the town we were both living in, and whenever there was an issue with the law he would call his friend and then magically the problem would go away. This is just a small town example, so I can only imagine what the top guys are up to on a daily basis.
Edit for the people asking: During my time in Korea, I worked at 2 different Hagwons. The first was in a small town (of about 100,000, by Korean standards that is small) that I highly doubt anyone here would know by name, most Koreans I talk to about it don't know about it. The second was at a major Hagwon in Seoul in the rich part of town, called Gangnam. I don't want to give the name because many celebrities' kids go to the school, but all you need to know is I met a lot of extremely rich people there. Like, several of my students' parents were CEOs, judges, politicians, etc.
Edit 2 for the people asking: I became friends with this Samsung employee because his younger brother was one of my students. At first, we would just chat in the lobby waiting for his brother. But over time we started hanging out outside of the school. Mostly because he wanted a foreigner friend to practice his English with, since he started going overseas often because of his new role at Samsung. Again, I am not 100% sure what his role was, we would just chat while drinking soju or eating food sometimes after work. That's all.
So for the people who are asking questions regarding his role, I genuinely don't know. And for people who think that is strange, I just want to say, I'm a guy, and like most guys I very rarely talk to my guy friends about their jobs. There are guy friends I have had for more then 10 years that I still do not 100% know what they do for work. All I know is that he told me he was in a "mid-level" position and that he was in charge of his own team. That's literally all I know, that and I believe he was in some aspect of promotion because I know he would go to different type of events around the world and around Korean fairly often. One time he got me into F1 for free when it was in Seoul because he had a booth there, and I was able to go behind the scenes. But that is literally all I know.

That was just sensationalism. There are a lot of spies with Chinese-North Korean ties in South Korea still now. Not long ago, North Korean spies were convicted. The order said, "Use the Itaewon tragedy. Use Saewolho...etc.
Meanwhile, there seems to be a connection between the spread of this kind of video in the United States. You should know that South Korea is on the front lines against communist forces. Russia invaded Ukraine and China ate Hong Kong. Hong Kong was replaced from within with pro-Beijing politicians and has since been absorbed by China. Now, South Korea's leftist politicians have been dominated by the pro-Beijing party since Moon Jae-in and have a huge opposition party. Not only leftist, also in right-wing. That's why President Yoon Seok-yul turned a blind eye by declaring martial law and tried to catch evidence of fraudulent elections. Today, South Korea has a big opposition party, and there are many stupid people who reject capitalism and want socialism. The end of socialism is the same as North Korea. An unmotivated society will only lead to its own destruction. In South Korea, order is preserved by the Constitution, at least for now. The proof is that the corrupt are brought to justice. It's proof that Korea is an advanced country, and you should know that most countries in the world have corrupt politicians and the establishment who wield so much power that it makes Korean chaebols look nothing, and it's never mentioned even in their media, unlike S.Korea.

It’s interesting how, in some countries, it’s easy to associate the faces and names of powerful individuals with the companies and crimes they are responsible for. In contrast, in the U.S., we often speak about corporations or institutions in abstract terms, without ever putting a face to those behind them. Companies like BlackRock, Vanguard, or Coca-Cola-and even powerful agencies like the FBI and CIA-frequently make headlines, but the blame rarely extends to the individuals who drive their decisions. When wrongdoing occurs, the public hears the company’s name, but those truly responsible remain faceless and nameless. This disconnect allows accountability to vanish behind corporate logos and institutional titles, shielding the people at the top from personal scrutiny.

Democracy, if we are not talking about anarchism, happens in states. But if we are talking about a slave-owning state, then it is obvious that this state was created by slaveholders for slaveholders. In all slave-owning states, no matter how democratic they call themselves, they are always totalitarian compared to primitive tribes. And in ancient Greece, where the term democracy was coined, only slaveholders could use this democracy.
Further, the feudal state was created by the feudal lords for the feudal lords. But here democracy is found only in independent trading city-states, and it works only for rich merchants and guild masters.
Under capitalism, the state is created by capitalists/bourgeoisie/businessmen for capitalists/etc. For example, the main supporters of liberalism in Britain and France were businessmen who could not develop under feudal laws. It is obvious that democracy under capitalism, as a rule, primarily works in the interests of capitalists. Democracy under capitalism is not the power of the people. It is nothing more than an opportunity to simply choose a "slave owner" (a party, a president), who will then be impossible to remove from office and who does not have any obligations to his voters.
And strangely enough, in all capitalist countries, first of all, big capitalists (oligarchs) live well. As you can see, life is getting worse all over the world (in China, Russia, Ukraine, the USA, Canada, Mexico, the EU, India, Syria, etc.), but not for bankers, media moguls, oil moguls, etc. No matter how hard German citizens tried to choose the "right president," life continued to get worse and worse, and the rich continued to get richer and richer. No matter how Americans tried to choose a "good president" every four years, he did nothing but further worsen their lives. As there have been more and more homeless Americans over the past 30 years, so it continues. As 0.001% of the American society beat the Forbes records, they continue to do so.
"The wealthiest people in America have never been wealthier.
      Here's who's up, who's down and who's new.
The 400 richest people in America are having a rollicking time in the roaring 2020s. In all, they are worth a record $5.4 trillion, up nearly $1 trillion from last year. A dozen have $100 billion-plus fortunes, also a record. And admission to this elite club is pricier than ever: A minimum net worth of $3.3 billion is required, up $400 million since 2023. Despite the high bar, 23 newcomers managed to break into the ranks, having grown their fortunes in everything from mundane plastic pipes to cutting-edge artificial intelligence." -- Forbes 400, 2024. www.forbes.com/forbes-400/

Basically South Korean parents force long hours of studying and extra studying on their children with the intention to make them have high enough scores so they can one day be employed by the Chaebols and ofcourse this means that those children oftentimes are left with very little free time if any at all and even if you get employed by the Chaebols then things are not always better because overwork is very common and in turn work related suicide in South Korea is the highest in the world even surpassing Japan!

@@james_giant_peach They're both bad in different ways - there's no real way to compare which is worse because of that - but if you're going off of history and the sheer level of feats, America is the worst by far.
Canada/America will happily oppress and kill entire peoples (I'm Native, tons of people I know have lost grandparents/great uncles/great aunts in residential schools and/or their parents/uncles/aunts/etc were abused/sexually assaulted/etc in those places. They were concentration camps designed to kill us off or to bare minimum kill our culture off - this happened in both Canada and America, for the unaware) just to further money-making agendas (less Natives "being a problem" = more avenues to press for capital and land gain, look at how America is now), whereas South Korea let the elites get away with anything they want and there's an extreme misogyny problem atm... but not really any history of concentration camp usage, to my knowledge? Or planting dr-gs in neighborhoods, idk.
Tons of old money families in the USA had their hands in slavery at some point, and tons more have their hands in extremist movements (particularly alt-right extremist garbage, neo-N*zis, etc, if you know what to look for you can find a lot of horrifying shit). Also don't forget the f3ds planting dr-gs in predominantly Black neighborhoods in the 60s and other horrible shit... yeah...
But the way each country is corrupt is different, which is the problem in comparing them especially if only considering the modern day - it can't really be done because the state of the corruption is so drastically different in each country. South Korea is basically RUN by chaebols, whereas America... well it's the same way (elites who run top companies/corps, old politicians, old money families like the ones who had hands in slavery, billionaires, etc), but they aren't blatant like South Korea is, in America they hide and try to dodge accountability in the "run and hide" way, instead of just using sheer power, influence and money to get their way like in South Korea. Both have the same outcome, it's just done *so differently* that it's not comparable.
      Consensus (grain of salt, since you asked the other guy, but maybe my reply will help give perspective too);
Modern-day only: South Korea by a slight margin, because they're blatant about it and nothing can be done
All of history or even considering the past 100 years (1925 to now): America by a FAR margin and you can throw Canada in there too because it's the same country just with public funded healthcare lol.

@@DF-jm6dq That's the governments role in capitalist societies and it does it's job provided the citizens don't vote to enable that greed for decades on end. Socialism does not escape this problem, in fact, this problem is pervasive in any model of society we've thought of. Once the citizens stop caring, the people with power can begin to accrue more and more it, the issue with any society is that once quality of life goes up for awhile, the citizens just stop giving a fuck.
In socialism that will look like the ruling party doing a power grab, funnelling wealth into their pockets and silencing dissent, which is why we see it happen in every country that tries this system, the difference being that because the power is already absolute in one institution, once this starts happening, you're instantly in a worst case scenario which is also why we see a lot of state violence.
In capitalism it's sort of happening in the US but in most western democratic capitalist systems every few years there's a chance that citizens decide that they want to go another direction. The issue we're facing is that the majority of citizens don't give a fuck and would rather vote to continue the status quo rather than do anything meaningful. This isn't a bug, this is a feature, the american people WANT this. Keep in mind, if americans thought this was an issue, they could've came out for bernie in 2016, they didn't, he wasn't polling well verse trump in 2016 and so the dnc chose hillary, if this was truly something americans cared about, why didn't they come out and support bernie in the primaries? This is the issue, americans don't want to change course.
Just for reference, the taxes paid by the richest americans has gone down by 80% in the last 40 years. Yet, americans didn't vote for the candidate whose rhetoric was to tax the wealthy, they voted for the candidate that cut the ACA, got permanent tax reduction (and temporary tax reductions for working class americans) for the rich and ran on consumer level taxes. The issue with capitalism in america isn't that it doesn't work, it's the the citizens choosing what to do CONTINUALLY choose to give away their wealth to the wealthy.
tl;dr. No, greed isn't unstoppable, in fact, in capitalist societies the populace tends to be very giving, extremely giving, so giving they'll let their country collapse rather than stop reducing taxes on the rich while their own taxes go up.

See, Chaebols operate through insanely complicated web of share ownership, such as owning 15%(thus becoming the largest single shareholder) of a company that then owns a similar share in another company and so on. Thus, Chaebols actually only own 10-20% of the actual conglomerate but still act as the decision makers.
Because all of this share ownership/distribution is done through family, anybody else being in charge would cause the entire conglomerate to collapse into separate companies that have no proper leadership structure individually. That kind of catastrophic collapse was unacceptable for a conglomerate representing 20+% of Korean GDP.
This is why the former CEO of Samsung was kept alive in a coma for close to a decade while his children desperately tried to redistribute and balance the shares among themselves.

I grew up with an obsession on South Korea & Simplicissimus, their german channel.
To see both together gives me almosta feeling of nostalgia, and seeing someone FINALLY talk about the bad side of Korea is so refreshing.
