One year red shirt in college will make up 4 years of high school. It's not a matter of if they can compete, it's more of a matter of when they can compete. Some of the bigger school kids are ready to play right away, so are some of the smaller school kids. That red shirt year of development puts everybody on a closer level. Colleges aren't recruiting for the high school athletes with experience, it's more so size and metrics and coachability.
