I bought my Taranis on your say so. I got into mini quads on your reviews, and if you have a hand in the shaping of the Horus, it will for sure be the best product on the market, and I know I can buy it with confidence as I have faith in you and trust your opinions. Thank you Bruce for all you do for the community. Paul.
Exciting stuff :-) and great to see FRsky talking to you to get some feedback before its release! love my taranis so hope this radio will be even better. Keep up the great work you do for our hobby!
So taranis is popular because frsky sent preproduction units to youtubers, not because it does the same but costs half of what Futaba sells and has telemetry on top? ;) Looking forward to the analysis of the damage and eventually the review of the final product.
+Jakub Steiner No, but delivering a product that is well-matched to the needs and wants of the market is crucial to success. By consulting that market throughout the development process (rather than simply allowing engineers and designers to make assumptions) is a key strategy in producing popular products that have high customer satisfaction.
+Jakub Steiner First you need to understand Horus is a big step for FrSky where they are developing a complete radio from scratch. Remember FrSky is principally an electronics manufacturer. Unlike the Taranis which basically unitised some of their existing products into a working radio, along the way they neatly sidestepped the case work by producing a reworked JR clone case and then relied on the open source developer community to provide the operating system. Two very large hurdles they can now not dodge with the Horus.
I don't see the reimagined, design-driven FrSky you are seeing. I look at the horus and see another classic Chinese clone. This time it's looking like something Jeti would produce. I'm still wating for some manufacturer to go back to the drawing board and look at the problem space of miniquad racers. I don't want a giant radio to lug around. I want something nimble, more towards a console controller rather than a giant slab of a desk with bajillion switches and sliders.
Clearly this radio is not aimed at you and I suspect you are a small minority in your selection criteria. A game controller style of TX is never going to be a satisfactory. To call the Horus another chinese clone is plain wrong. It has a number of leading features and as I said it has been developed from the ground up. It even has it's own OS called FrTX which is FrSkys solution for a menu driven radio for the less technical types.
+Rob B Does not matter what it does or what features it has .. the radio case is clunky bulky and clearly designed to be a tray radio , no good to the typical thumb flyer..The taranis uses one of the best ever case designs and is very comfy to hold.
Bruce , hell where do I start !! IMHO You Sir have the integrity to address the issues that we are faced with as Modelers and thus should command a considerable amount of respect from other modeler's in this region as well as in this case the manufacturer's of said equipment . I doff's my Cap to you and wait to hear more when your able. I myself have a HiTech system I bought some 20 Years ago that functions perfectly and at this stage have no plans on changing BUT will be keeping a close eye on happenings as they are revealed.
I must say, after many years of JR/Spektrum, I couldn't be happier with my Taranis X9E. My Spektrum/JR transmitters never allowed for the addition of hardware, and the proprietary FW made complex models over 6 channels virtually impossible to set up. With the X9E, I was able to add a couple switches (I needed an additional 2 position switch for TX output power on the EZUHF). I was also able to add 2 PR10 Taranis gimbals, one for camera pan/tilt, and the other for tilt rotor control. I guess FrSky knew what my issues were, and supplied me with the perfect solution.... I'll not be looking back.
Always appreciate your transparency! :) Can't wait for your input on the turnigy graphene batteries! Unfortunately, I haven't seen any real world testing of them yet. And as a longshot wish here, I am using these 2204 motors that say they are 3200kv from MiniQuadBros for the Jabberwocky 180. I would love to hear your opinions on them and if they really are 3200kv with 893g thrust at ~30A with 11.1v on two blade 4 inch propellers; then hopefully they can be your new favorite motors as well :) Thank you for all that you do and cheers!
Hi Bruce, I know that this is completely unrelated to the Frsky Horus but yesterday I got a hobbyking wingnetic in the mail and upon powering up the motor with the prop on for the first time the motor ripped out of the foam, destroying the nose of the plane and cutting my arm in the process. I've complained to hobbyking about this but they refuse to honour their warranty agreement due to "crash damage" and I have been told by a product specialist that I have crashed the plane while flying, even though it never left the ground!!! I was just hoping for some advice for how to deal with Hobbyking as I was really looking forward to flying this plane, and cannot justify spending another $110 to buy a replacement airframe. (Auspost shipping is ridiculous these days! $50 from NSW to Brisbane) Anyway, I thank you if you've taken the time to read this rant of a comment, and look forward to possibly hearing back from you. Also, SUPER pumped about the Frsky Horus review. -Mitch
Mitch, you can rant and rave to Hobbyking all you want, but if they play the "crash damage" card, unfortunately your stuffed my friend. They can be a good and a bad company in this regard. Customer service has never been there strong point! Not sure of your level of experience with model building, but a cheap foam pos like the Wingnetic can be repaired with toothpicks glue and patience. Granted you shouldn't have to repair a plane before you even got to fly the damn thing! But I would definitely call their asses back up and give them a piece of your mind!!!! Regardless of what happens make a video and call em out about that crap!
+eric deherrera - ya I don't know what that plane even looks like (I'll have to google it) but I would be really PO too. I guess that's one more thing to check now before starting up a motor in a new model. I would suggest staying on HK's case on the phone and also posting a negative review on the sales page. Be a pain and keep their number on speed dial. Do they have phone number somewhere? I just looked and can't find it. If not be a pain on their text online help. Take lots of pictures of anything on the plane that might help to show that it hasn't been flown such as how clean it is etc. Close up views. Also, I see you post videos on TH-cam (I haven't seen any yet) but I would post a video showing the plane and explain what happened. Others should know to perhaps avoid that model for safety and perhaps how to fix or prevent the same from happening to them such as checking this or that bolt, etc. I've got a Cloud Surfer coming so I will definitely be checking the motor mount now. Also, perhaps from now on before first power up make sure you are recording a video just in case? Best of luck.
I've always thought a company who produces these types of products like RC toys, RC models, RC gear, scale toy figures like action figures, collectible items like replicas of movie props and items, etc, should consult trusted TH-cam reviewers because it's good for the company and the consumer, win/win. Good to see FrSky doing it.
As primarily a quad racer I hope this unit suits my need in terms of sensitivity and ergonomics. I know the NDA lift won't be until months away, but please do touch on 250 sized quad performance on this beast Bruce! With the booming market of mini quads I wager this will be a contender for those able to afford it, but maybe not wanting to break the bank on a Jeti.
The Frsky website shows a couple of pictures of the Horus. I didn't see anywhere to attach a neckstrap. Maybe I wasn't looking closely enough. The website also mentions Hall effect sensors when talking about the sticks. Maybe that's the interesting thing about the sticks you refer to. Hopefully the micro has more memory available. From memory, resources were starting to get a little tight on the Taranis.
What a shame they were not able to package properly! :( I like many look forward to your tear down and reviews, this one 'could' be a brand change for many people! :)
Glad to see you got one actually. I know you'll given them your opinion and the will listen to it (even if they don't make all the changes you recommend) as they will to all the beta testers. It can only become a better product for it.
I know you are honest and will review a product the way it is, Good or Bad. I have watched your channel and review's for about six months now and have been rewarded with many hours of building and flying RC Models, thanks for commitment to the hobby. Rich
Halls sensors in the gimbals finally, only been waiting 10 years! This is the change from pre war technology the hobby needs. Potentiometers in gimbals should be dead in the next year for all but the cheapest of entry level TX. If they do this, add a module slot for different protocols and give us SBUS they will be getting my money, probably several times.
+Allan T Ah well, my job is a hard one -- but somebody has to do it (LOL). Actually, I was seriously thinking of making a video called "the best job in the world" -- but that might be seen as gloating ;-)
From some footage I've seen of it the knobs and shifters look like they were taken from a 1970s stereo. Is that a video display or just a large display for changing settings? Its good to see FrSky trying to do something a bit different but it still looks quite hefty.I'd have preferred a lighter, thinner, more portable design.
+S700KY I third that opinion x2 My brother and I have just recently begun our first quad builds and I doubt we'd have had the courage to do so as quickly as we have without Bruce's very well informed opinions and educational videos (which we like even more than the reviews)
Darn! Just bought my Taranis ;) haha. Just moved up from my 9XR Pro and it is wayy better. Spektrum radios are nice in features and design, but not where close in terms of value for money!
+The RCAddict By switching mindsets I think he was talking about setting up a Spektrum versus the OpenTX type systems. I think he missed the part that you're upgrading from a 9X which already runs an OpenTX variant.
I'm starting to think that someone at the NZ post office kicks every package you receive before final delivery. Can't be any other explanation at this point!
Hi Bruce, bit off topic but loved your low cost drone build to the point that I'm now trying to source components for my own build. My rc history is mainly nitro cars and basic helicopter or as you put unicopter lol! I am a beliver that sometimes it's better to get a better item for durability or to be able to grow with the model as your experience grows. I would love to see another build series from the other end of the price spectrum that could then be worked backwards to cheaper component's if desired. I like the look of impulserc 5" alien frame? Is a review like this on your radar? any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work love your reviews your consistency and honesty is refreshing and your knack for dumbing some things down for beginners is great as it helps us also make our own decisions.
I like the idea of you being involved. It should be nice for them to get your opinion before a real review. Its a win win because we get a better product and they don't have to get beat up too bad by you haha.
If you're in a position to give feedback to frsky, please ask them to add RSSI injection at least as an option to their receivers. I'm spoiled by OpenLRSng with which just about any rx can be configured to support PPM, s.bus, SUMD (much better) and let me inject RSSI on one of those channels so my flight controller and OSD can get to them. Some of the radios have RSSI output in the form of high-speed PWM, which has in itself varied across firmware updates/builds so trying to read it digitally has shown mixed luck. (and while some people seem to think it's a good idea, using telemetry to report an iffy signal back across that signal twice before showing up on my OSD is incompatible with having a report of weak signal / packet loss)
You're one lucky man Bruce to have that transmitter to review! Anyway, does your NDA include not showing the transmitter in your video Bruce? just in case you haven't noticed, images of Horus and information on the Tx has been circulating on the web as early as December 2015 and talks about the product can be found in several rc groups. IMO, I think Frsky is just trying to build a hype :) but with respect to them, yes you are right that they have a top notch transmitter with Taranis
+xjet Even if FrSky has given you a gratis item (hey great), they should be paying you for your constructive input. This is essentially R&D work, which I believe deserves remuneration.
+Spoif No. If I was to take money for assisting *any* manufacturer or provider it would effectively call into question my independence and objectivity -- even though I, and 99% of viewers would know that I was still a straight shooter. So I'd rather stick to my principles and not jeopardize my reputation.
+xjet - well initially I agree with Spoif that simply getting a "free" radio isn't much for providing feedback. But at the same time I kinda think receiving a free unit could be considered pay the same as money. Unless I suppose you donated it after the review process to the local orphanage. I have NO doubts about getting honest reviews from you whether you payed for them or they were provided for "free". But at the same time I wouldn't be repairing the radio unless it only took literally only 5 minutes and $1 of parts. Send it back. It's a review of their shipping department any way! Without taking pay for signing the NDA and providing feedback I would definitely provide the feedback like I would for any other product I BUY but I wouldn't be telling them how to fix the problems either. "I don't like this... it should be like this" but not "this 74LS14 should be a 74AC14", etc. Keep up the good work! And while I'm not in the market for a new radio, is there a ETA on when this radio will be out and you can review it? 2 months or 6 months. Just curious how far in advanced you receive the product before they finalize it.
ElmerFuddGun Absolutely. Also, by signing an NDA, Bruce has already entered into a contractual agreement with FrSky. ***** Personally I think you should return the unit on general principal if it is unusable out of the box if remaining unbiased is your concern.
+Spoif I think the goal is to repair the unit so that I can contribute some feedback and thus hopefully contribute to the goal of making sure consumers get the best product. The repairs are trivial and will only take half an hour or so, once I get the parts from FrSky. Pragmatism trumps pedantism every time :-)
awesome!!!! now if frsky would come out with a small diversity rx with sbus the size of the lemon rx life would be great!!!!! O and a naked version of it as well (no pins).
Hi Bruce, struggling to contact you (contact form at Aardvark bouncing) I have paid for your pulse jet download with paypal but have not received any download instructions.
Ive ordered heaps of stuff from China and HK to where I live in Tasmania and never had anything damaged. So just a maybe; but could it possibly be the NZ end and not Chinese post that's causing your damage! The Chinese economy relies on these exports and I couldnt imagine heavy handed despatch workers would last long in their jobs.
Oh my god bruce, even your Horus gets hit with your Jinx?????? Wait, I have to stop laughing. Nah, this is gonna take a while. I'll get back with you. Thanks mate.
+Oscar Thorpe Holy shit! 1,500€ for a radio with features, many of which are matched or even beaten by a 200€ Taranis? I've alwys though that the "brands" sell overpriced stuff, but that is excessive. I always find it funny, when they list something like "16 mixers", "5 flightmodes", "7 point curves", aso. as great features. Yeah, they are great if you compare them to their own totally crippled "cheaper" models. (I think a Taranis gives you 32 mixers, 8 flightmodes, and 17 point curves - with smoothing function, for example).
Bruce, I am glad that you are still around after that nastiness with the pulse jet altercation with the USA goverment arseholes! What ever happened with those immortal cockroaches? Did you have a lucrative book deal?
It's strange you said you could not review it since a couple of people already did it though... If i was you i would have definitely gone to my post-office, someone is clearly destroying all your shipping items, it's impossible to have so many issues, i can not count the number of times i saw a destroyed box in your videos, they target you somewhere for sure...
+ABMNS PRODUCTION Never attribute to malice, that which is as easily explained by incompetence! I figure it was just a case of FrSky shipping it on the eve of the Chinese New Year and perhaps a few China Express workers who were so keen to get away for their holidays that they booted all the Friday afternoon packages into the bin rather than "placing them carefully":-)
+Toff E Such units are sold commercially with all those functions integrated. Traditionally they would be limited to high-value shipments, but these days they are much more affordable. The problem is that it must be packaged with the shipment at the origin. It doesn't help Bruce to put it into the package after he opens it. :)
I don't think they research because they would never have come out with that stupid neck strap and flip cover and the external antenna position is bad. I bought 2 of these and I like the programming and the gimbals but the the switch cover is where I loos it . It is useless
Its a copy and I feel for the Czechs when China does this. You might get a cheap Tx - but where are the morals in that? The R/C industry has got so glib about this type of thing coming out of China, but I can bet you that Jeti will have spoken to their litigation team by now - so enjoy your feel good video and your cheap TXs....
FINAL RANT: X12S? Big deal... its a copy of Jeti's DC-16/DS-16. So how about reviewing them Bruce? Instead of all the low-budget (perpetually in beta) TXs. How about testing some real quality for a change?
+Aegean Epiphany Well if Jeti want to send me a unit to review then I'll happily do so. As for quality -- well I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the Horus (wink).
+xjet I think epiphany needs to remember that a lot of us modelers can't afford a grand or more for radio also so if we can get something similar if that's what we're looking for, for 300 that's great for us!
I don't know anybody that runs a Jeti, not only due to the cost but due to the fact that they don't fly large-scale 30 channel planes that are scale reproductions they spent seven years building either I guess...
I bought my Taranis on your say so. I got into mini quads on your reviews, and if you have a hand in the shaping of the Horus, it will for sure be the best product on the market, and I know I can buy it with confidence as I have faith in you and trust your opinions. +S700KY I second that motion completely. I've sent many new pilots towards Bruce's Channel, immediate converts into the Hobby.
same here!
WOW!! You got one you lucky bugger!! Looking forwards to your feedback

I'm close to needing a radio so anything to compare against the taranis will be welcome.
Thanks Bruce! Great video like always
I'm looking forward to this review because I've had my eye on the horus ever since the first rumours of it started circulating.
Bruce, congrats on your opportunity to provide input to the new product! Keep up the great work!Don

Great stuff Bruce can't wait to see the final product.

+xjet well if you find your job getting too hard you can give me a shout lol
Hey Bruce, Would you recommend waiting for the horus or get the taranis x9d plus.
Shame this lovely case was destroyed during shipping... Try to fix that since it look amazing!
What will be the price of that radio?
To you all who asks for pictures and reviews: Type "FrSky Horus" in the search bar above. There's even detailed teardown of the gimbal to be seen!
From some footage I've seen of it the knobs and shifters look like they were taken from a 1970s stereo. Is that a video display or just a large display for changing settings? Now that this is available you'll be doing a review? :)
Bruce gonna give me the feels
Bruce, I fully understand but... I can hardly wait for what you have to say!!! ;-)
what happened to reviewing the team black sheep crossfire? been waiting months for that review

begun our first quad builds and I doubt we'd have had the courage to do
so as quickly as we have without Bruce's very well informed opinions and

Two things are very clear:
1. Several of those receiving those pre-prod Horues haven't read the NDA the same way.
2. It's time to start saving up...
Darn! Just bought my Taranis ;) haha. Just moved up from my 9XR Pro and it is wayy better. Spektrum radios are nice in features and design, but not where close in terms of value for money!
+The RCAddict You won't see Horus for a year so the rent on the Taranis is a few bux a month as you switch your mind set around.....
Brian B Not sure what you mean? Haha.
It'll be out this year.
im2tall1 I know that, but what does "as you switch your mind set around....." mean? Haha, seems negative to me :)
Can the case now be used as a women's overnight makeup case since it's all buggered up? :)
thanks for the heads up Bruce
nice hope the radio will be released soon ☺
How does one contact Bruce for his services?
+Marc Stollmeyer There's an email address on the RCModelReviews website under the feedback tab.

I like the idea of you being involved. It should be nice for them to get your opinion before a real review. Its a win win because we get a better product and they don't have to get beat up too bad by you haha.
How much $
Same thing happened to my original Taranis: the case was cracked. Luckily the TX was intact.
+Jan Bobis I will be doing a video showing you what I can, once it's fixed.
+xjet Hi Bruce. So excited to see this TX in action and would love to hear your review on this new product!
very interesting sticks? So I guess we are getting hall sensors.
Pragmatism trumps pedantism every time :-)
***** Congratulations Bruce! I hope you enjoy your new job at FrSky ;)
You gonna review this or not?
I love the design of the Horus. My Taranis is great and all but it's a big ugly, grey box. Cant wait to see more!
A UT fan, that's why you like the name 'Horus' hahaha!
A quick peek inside the case would have been good Bruce . Are you not allowed to even show it ?
BRUCE HELP PLEASE! all the people i come into contact with who know about the taranis and frsky pronounce it "eff-arr-sky". why not "free-sky"
awesome!!!! now if frsky would come out with a small diversity rx with sbus the size of the lemon rx life would be great!!!!! O and a naked version of it as well (no pins).
+Tim Bell You mean like this one ? : www.frsky-rc.com/product/pro.php?pro_id=154
+MKO2037 yeah but one with replaceable antennas like D4R & X4R.
Can't wait...
Cool... new transmitter;-)
Hi Bruce, struggling to contact you (contact form at Aardvark bouncing) I have paid for your pulse jet download with paypal but have not received any download instructions.
NDA? why put it on the bench then?
Ive ordered heaps of stuff from China and HK to where I live in Tasmania and never had anything damaged. So just a maybe; but could it possibly be the NZ end and not Chinese post that's causing your damage! The Chinese economy relies on these exports and I couldnt imagine heavy handed despatch workers would last long in their jobs.
Ok, now for the sandwich.
Back with the Bunch!!
ok so dont review what about a video of the repair???
who's with me , lets crash into Bruce's garage , put everything in the trunk , and wait for ambulance to clear us out .. >> "FPV Mafia Reinforcements"
YOU MUST REVIEW IT NOW
For God`s sake I hope its touch screen with the ease of not needing the manual to do simple things like dual rates..
Oh my god bruce, even your Horus gets hit with your Jinx??????
Wait, I have to stop laughing.
Nah, this is gonna take a while. I'll get back with you. Thanks mate.
same thing happened with my taranis case.
if only spektrum consulted the market to see what people want, has anyone seen the crappy new 'DX20'?
+Oscar Thorpe
Holy shit!
Frsky 👍🏻 for that Way to do it 🤓👍🏻🇩🇰
I just hope it doesn't look like the X9E... ;-)
it's a pity you couldn't become an agent for frsky. You probably would make a lot of money but have no time for anything else.
If you haven't got anything to tell, then don't bother :(
Bruce,
I am glad that you are still around after that nastiness with the pulse jet altercation with the USA goverment arseholes!
I figure it was just a case of FrSky shipping it on the eve of the Chinese New Year and perhaps a few China Express workers who were so keen to get away for their holidays that they booted all the Friday afternoon packages into the bin rather than "placing them carefully":-)
place an accelerometer and event/time logger in a parcel, even a gps unit, see when and where your parcels are getting the big boot put in them.
+Toff E Such units are sold commercially with all those functions integrated. Traditionally they would be limited to high-value shipments, but these days they are much more affordable. The problem is that it must be packaged with the shipment at the origin. It doesn't help Bruce to put it into the package after he opens it. :)
+pillsnotbills nah meant he could set it up, send himself a package, get someone to do it, kinda thing, but yeh not really a serious idea! just jokes!
dont like tray radios :)
love my Taranis plus though .
I am very glad that you think you are so important.....Come across as "Stuck up 'in my view\
+tailspins1 Hey man... don't you know... I am *unique*... just like everyone else in the world :-)
I'm jealous.
I don't think they research because they would never have come out with that stupid neck strap and flip cover and the external antenna position is bad. I bought 2 of these and I like the programming and the gimbals but the the switch cover is where I loos it . It is useless
weekly-not-so-weekly...and now review-not-review-just-yet???
Don't review it, just tell us how you feel when you examine / use it! They cant stop you from telling how you feel in a NDA, can't they ? :)
Vigor and enthusiasm!!! Hahaha
So what you're saying is that you're a beta tester? LOL
What a HORUS.. err... Horrible Name. Just saw some pics of it on RCGroups.
So far I'm not impressed by it's looks.
