    Anywhere else on the pitch that’s a foul in my mind. I can see why people don’t think it’s a penalty, but if you make contact with studs up like that you’re likely to be concede a foul.

    Netherlands midfield was completely useless in the first half, they weren't even trying to close down space. We didn't even change our general strategy following the Switzerland game, Netherlands just played into it like idiots.

    Depay was the worst player on the pitch until he was subbed off. Heavy touches, wrong off-ball movement. He didn't look happy all game.

    • @Broodplank86
      @Broodplank86 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      He looked really poor the whole tournament... I can't understand why he tried to do semi tricks all the time when passed to him, just receive the ball in a regular fashion when you're not in form?
      Koeman should have swapped him for Malen or Zirkzee after France, keeping Weghorst as the super-sub. Gakpo was well in form on the left, and on the right he could have played Bergwijn or Frimpong, or worst case swap Malen back there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • @abdullahelbagouri
    @abdullahelbagouri 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Smth worth mentioning is the loss of depay. When Netherlands were in possession, depay would drop into midfield providing an extra man in midfield and also creating space in behind for malen and gakpo. This actually lead to the first goal if u play it back. But after depays injury koeman subbed on veerman, but I thought it should've been zirkzee cuz he can play that role pretty well and it wouldn't disruption Netherlands (imo) clever attacking play. They may have scored a goal or 2 imo.

    • @kailashpatel1706
      @kailashpatel1706 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agree...though they got the ball out to the flanks better,it lacked cutting edge..I have said that Xavi should have pushed higher up to support Gakpo Zirkzee is an interesting choice.., i disagree about Depay, he was awful, the goal came from a higher press, the Dutch forwards simply were not dropping into midfield to counter Rice and Mainoo leaving them free to overun their midfield in the first half..

    Only in the 1st half the English were dominating because the Dutch didn't stick to their task and stood tactically not correct in the field. In the 2nd half the Dutch players stood a lot better and all the sudden the English didn't dominate anymore. Just the Dutch biggest problem during the entire tournament is Koeman who kept his best players on the bench. Too much faith in the "establishment". He should also have kept Malen in the field and have played with Brobbey instead of Weghorst because now the Dutch lacked speed on the midfield while Weghorst despite playing well was ineffective as he mostly stood in midfield. I am sure the Dutch were able to beat England last night when Watkins didn't made that splendid goal in the last minute. I am sure they would have done with the right players who were all available but never given time to play.... When England play like in the first half they will have a chance against Spain since they have difficulties playing under pressure, but no team can play like this for 90min, so i am afraid England will be facing what the Dutch have suffered from since 1974....(except for '88) ...the never winning a final syndrome.

    I don't much time to watch football these days (timezone means most games are between 1am-7am for me) and with many of the games behind subscriptions I haven't watched football in a long time.
    Around 2015-2018 when I did regularly watch football, this would never have been called a penalty. Both players are going for the ball - the attacker has the right to follow through and the defender has the right to try block it. Collision is an expected part of the game and if it was the defender volleying that, it would never have been a foul. Plus, if Kane was as injured as all his rolling around suggested, he wouldn't have been able to walk/run normally and take the penalty.

    So I’m a VERY casual watcher of football and tend to only watch intentionals these days so correct me if I chat shit here, but I can’t help but feel like the way Kane keeps dropping super deep is choking us out offensively as it limits our outlets. Like he’s meant to be up top but when he loses confidence in the team he drops further and further back meaning we have to rely on our wings more, completely eliminating a third of the pitch as an option of play, it’s why I’ve loved seeing Watkins come on for the team as even before NED he was creating a lot of attacking pressure with runs. Am I wrong for thinking this or?

      It's hard to do so if they have to act as double 8 as well as attacking the space like wingers, usually klopp's liverpool pulled those tactics but they played with the 2 wingers upfront in between the wingback and center back and the formation almost resembled a looped 2-2-4-2, with 2 center backs, 2 wingbacks, bobby as false 9 and the 3 midfielders occupying the pockets in a diamond.
      The thing is there's many more things teams can do when playing with a box midfield, than just neglecting the wings like england did after being manmarked by netherlands, even emery plays 2-2-4(box)-2.

    "By that time Kane had already kicked the ball"
    Not relevant. A common misunderstanding. It's no different from a contact foul anywhere on the pitch. We don't say, "Well, he'd already passed the ball by the time the contact was made, so no foul". The referee can choose to play advantage, or to call the foul. In this case, there was no advantage (no goal resulted), so the ref (or more correctly the VAR team and THEN the ref) called the foul.

    The penalty was 100% correct.
    There's no logical reasoning that supports the idea of thrusting your leg forwards studs-up to stop a ball. Normally to block a shot you'd make yourself as wide as possible, not do a flying kick at the striker!
    Once you see it, it cannot be unseen: The defender very clearly was aiming at Kane, not the ball.
    At best it was a reckless moment of poor judgement; But more realistically it was a moment of anger and panic.
    Congratulations to the referee, it was a tricky one but he made the correct call. It was a penalty, without a doubt.

    All these analysis seem to rely on players not being able to go one-on-one with the defender. Twenty minutes is spent passing the ball from left to right, right to left, left to right, back to the goal keeper rinse and repeat.
    If one attacking player, runs at the defender and gets passed them, it opens up the entire defence. Although Kane has no dribbling skills and is slow, Bellingham, Saka, Foden and Palmer when he is playing have ball skills and Walker's speed should see him attack down the wing.
    The second half England had possession but in their own half, aimless side to side passing the Netherland defence could have been reading a book it was unthreatening. Triangle passes can cut through a defence but there just seems a total reluctance to take people on.
    The Netherlands were just not that good, and yet second-half England made them look better than they were.

    I don't think there was some great master plan it was mostly players like Foden especially, ignoring Southgate and playing to his comfort. Rice would be better utilized further forward

    the english tactic made no sense at all, they had both bellingham kane and foden up front when none of them look to threaten the box, he had saka and trippier hold the width like wing back and it was soooo dumb, they were playing on their weaker foot so they couldnt make any dangerous cross from the byline, and saka is used to invert and move into the pocket where foden was the entire time. Somehow kyle walker was a beast and both overlapped saka while playing as a CB which is incredibly risky, and he managed to stop threats coming from his side, what a beast. Also I'm not sure rice and mainoo make a good double pivot, I'm not sure they have the passing range and skills to break the opposition's defense, although this might be wrong because even if they had a good passing range, they still had no options up top to be on the end of through balls.

    • @jerkov420
      @jerkov420 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Whatever it is you are saying about Southgate's tactics, it worked didn't it? Also, people saying that they used a 3421 are either not paying attention or not describing the full picture. While they're calling it a 3421 on paper (and out of possession) it's actually a 4231 in possession.
      That's why youre seeing Walker overlap "as a CB". He's actually overlapping because, in practice, he is the RB.

    Absolutely a penalty. It was a high boot with studs showing. The defender was not just blocking the shot - he knew Kane would be forced to kick his foot with the follow through. We've all been there. He knew exactly what he was doing. Had he moved his foot back a few inches it would be ok but he put his foot in a dangerous position causing dangerous play. It would have been a free kick anywhere else on the pitch so it must be here too.

      I kinda agree but nothing is absolute in finals, usually. You can have a single moment or inspiration and that would be the defining moment. The same Spain which thrashed Italy 4-0 in the Euros 2012 final, had a hart time in 2010 final, until the Iniesta moment, to grab the winner
