Not retired, It was put in storage with a # of other CR EMD's. CSX could not use 8888 because of it's need of Major Overhaul repairs to the engine and they put it into storage, However 8888 was taken out of storage and sent to CSX's shops in Kentucky back in 2010. Me and a number of other folks spotted Crazy 8's in Fostoria that night with another CSX SD40 and some HLCX leasors heading to Columbus. It's current location is unknown....
Yup, They are turning it onto a -3 model, I don't remember where they are sending it though so maybe when they ship it to get rebuilt someone will be able to get it on video. When I saw it I don't believe it was operating, Was dead in tow heading southward back to Kentucky.
Bryce, As far as I know, the unit at the time we saw it on the webcam was dead in tow. It is, as of now retired and awaiting it's rebuilt to a Dash 3 boxcab.
CSX's SD40-3 is basically an SD40-2 with electrical and computer upgrades. Also, these units have homebuilt safety cabs,(nicknamed boxcabs) as replacements for the older EMD standard Spartan cab. Minus then new cab and ratchet brake stands, these units pretty much look like regular SD40-2's.
I didn't catch it, It came through on a coal train 2 hours after I left. I saw it on the Fostoria webcam. But I wanted to specify this to let people know that it did come through.
