My understanding of the MV is the real Taemin(the one with plain clothes)has lost his childhood,got separated from family at a young age,got bullied, no freedom to love (idols r not allowed to), treated as a puppet by the industry like telling him how to do stuff like walking, talking etc, it's all making him feel trapped, suffocated with deep wounds inside of him( like he is in jail) but he can't escape because he is seduced by Artist Taemin(the one with fancy cloths)& he is asking the real one to surrender because they are fated to be together.The real Taemin feels guilty for being criminally in love with his artistic version despite all his sufferings & is lost without him.This MV shows all the sacrifices he has done & suffering he has been through to be the idol he is today.It's really deep.

The way he does dark concepts is so amazing to me.
I think if you think about how guilt feels, the video/song represents it perfectly. The way he moves through the corridors and outside, and the choreography feels like he is out of control, and being suffocated by the situation, he is overwhelmed and struggling to understand up from down, invisible and visible hands push him around. You can't help but feel sad or sorry for him, despite him singing that he's done something horrible. And I think it's because, unlike in "Want", he is not proud or embracing it here; his pain, struggle and guilt are obvious. It's haunting.
To me, the overall story of the video was that love (and life) is not always cutesy and sweet; it can come with a dark side, conflicting feelings, being intense and too much. You can do things you regret, and it can spin out of control, you can be aware of doing something wrong and not know how to stop, you can want things that are not good for you or someone that you care about. You can hurt people and be aware of what you are doing but not know how to do it better. You can love the wrong people, make mistakes and feel... well, guilty. It's just a very painful side of human experience that we don't like to look at because guilt and shame go together and make us very uneasy.
This must be the best explanation I’ve read so far, you put it perfectly into words and it has perfect sense. Yes, love is not always rainbows and unicorns. There’s often this dark, destructive side to it, the deception, the manipulation. And sometimes it gets out of hand and we spiral into darkest places. And however intoxicating this feeling of “power” over other person can be, with that pleasure comes pain and guilt…

that's really an incredible perspective to look at. However with all the comments from the mv director and taemin himself , especially when he mentions how music is a way to relieve him of his trauma,this mv most probably represents how exploited he felt by the industry that debuted a kid and tried controlling but look now, taemin has now become his own genre and very successful idol

The melody and energy of this song took me from beginning to end to the charm of a witch or mermaid. Do you know when a witch or mermaid casts a spell on a person with her melodious, soft and mesmerizing voice? That's what I felt in Taemin's voice, so much so that he uses symbols of enchanted poisoned apples. I heard this song with the image in my head of taemin in the middle of a forest attracting us to him with his singing. Scary but seductive at the same time.

I've read that this song and 'Advice' were the title choices for the cb in 2021 before he went to military. He chose Advice obviously and when he came back this year he revamped the sound a bit to suit the present trends.

In case anyone wants to know why they feel so emotionally stirred: Taemin deliberately crafted two layers in the MV, with hyper specific message that was lost in translation. I made an explainer video for that. Taemin took great risks to say something he needed to say, hear him out!

I absolutely loved this comeback. The song, his voice, everything. The dance (since I am more into contemporary dance, I like it even more), the video, really everything. We missed Taemin and he came back stronger than ever, in the most beautiful way he could. I don't know who is the team behind his music, dance, videos in SM, but they always do an amazing job.

thanks for delivering us another amazing review, this time of Taemin's Guilty launching video.
In the end of your review, when you analyze the lyrics, you suggest there's not that much connection between the lyrics and the video contents itself and you ask for us to share our opinion too.
Here's mine: I'm not that Taemin follower who is aware of every move in his career and personal life, but I've bumped into some news that he had a depressing experience in his days in the military.
Some scenes of the video show a dormitory full of young people that could be associated to a military dorm. At the same time, one could compare such a place with a hospital or similar institution dedicated to treat mental illness patients or, even, drug addicts.
In fact, some flashes bring what appears to be male nurses manipulating the bodies of these young people, like conditioning them while they are in a sort of anguish.
Could be these repressing institutions, this merciless society trying to shape, restrict and contain the liberty, creativity and expression of these new generations?
There's a take in which Taemin's character appears trying to breathe by a inhaler... He's suffocating. In another he has scraped his own flesh in agony and hangs on the legs of what seems to be a hospital caregiver, like a drug addict who is in treatment and at the mercy of who is molding him to be normal like all the others.
...but suddenly he appears with a crown of feathers in his head, surrounded by all who seem to support him... As in... He cannot be framed by the system, he's the king who stands in the crowd... In spite of suffering so much inside.
In this interpretation the lyrics could be seen as a subtle hint to addiction to medication against depression and/or drugs that many young people undergo due to the pressures of trying to adjust to so many social expectations. It's not only a love fixation, it could be something more:

Spellbound, you wanna take a bite?
Hand outstretched
In danger, sinking deeper
Just a little more, that’s all it takes
Messing you up, I throw it all away
Gift you once as a bait, then I take everything
Make you addicted, you can't tell pain from love

As a matter of fact, the kPop idols live in an enormous competitive industry in a country in which expectations of success are huge in every area what, by the way, results in one of the biggest suicide rates worldwide (according to the World Health Organization, it's the fourth highest in the world still this year 2023).
I could not avoid thinking of Moonbin, whom many attribute suicide as cause of death, but koreans are very reserved when talking about these matters.
It could be a tribute to Moonbin and others who are suffering mentally up to relying on chemicals to ease the pain, eventually sinking to addiction. If this reading is right, the lyrics and the video are very correlated.
...and I would extend my congratulations to Taemin and his team not only due to the elevated value of this work artistically, but to expose, even if implicitly, a very important subject to the south korean society and all nations around the world, to strengthen the networks of support against mental illness, drug addiction and suicide.

It's about toxic relationships and bullying, toxic and bullyish classmates, teachers, parents, love artners, bosses, workmates... it can be applied to all types of human relationships, not only love ones. And the video seems to focus more on school bullying with the school-looking like place and the kids, the kids paintings etc. But it also focis on how having went through it, been a victim of it, you can also becl or become someone else's bully or toxic one!!!! As if it was some type of cycle. Who is the guilty one?
Hi, i am back. Good reaction, ty. Good song. On 1st listen I felt strongly like crying. The tears were held in though the whole song though. But at the end i had to wipe my eyes. I just want to hug Taemin. On my 2nd listen i read the lyrics. And after i wondered was my reaction all in my head. There are layers here upon layers. Loved the fits and makeup. Some of the subject matter was an issue for me. I know Taemin had lots of mental health issues in the military. Based on the teasers I thought he would talk about it. And it looks like he does in his own way. I really want to hear his views on this song and album. I watched Suchwita ep. w. Taemin right after this. Glad he is back giving us headaches, lol. Perfect vocals in my opinion. The feathered headband is a Native American thing for me. I feel it has an important significance. The lyrics had nothing to do with the images in the MV agree. I think this is way over my head. I ended up watching some reactions to see what others think of Taemin's msg here. Feels based on imagery. Great choreo. I also was getting examination. After a few reactions i am thinking he is showing military and psych mental health area. Like a mix of places. I was thinking were ppl saying he was guilty of making them feel attracted to him? Does he feel guilty about something? Lots of thoughts going through my head. I am so glad u watched the teasers. The more i watch the more i think that he is combining the military facility with a mental health facility. And we know he suffered in the military and asked for a transfer. So it seems he is portraying his struggles here.

I'm still confused about the exact meaning, but again, there could be different interpretations as with his other songs. But from the visuals i get the feeling it refers to abuse, it can be at so many levels. It can have psychological and physical or both, you can suffer it under your own family, friends, at school, at work, in love relationships... Then who is the perpetrator? many times you can be trapped by those people, even in a group or the society, you don't even realise but by the time you realise you have been actually abused THEY are gone, who can you blame exactly? I have gone through my own dose of abuse, and after years you realise but you end up blaming yourself too, as if you hadn't known better but then you allowed it...😢 Also the images of classroom and rooms with beds, and a kid surrounded by a group...Taemin is watching him from the door as if he was watching himself as a kid... also at the end those kids in school uniforms, all spread around, one grabbing the legs of an adult that grabs his leg, bleeding... South Korea also has buIIying as endemic.. at schools (kids also teachers committing suicide as they can't either find understanding or help by their surroundings, on the contrary they are treated as the outcast and weirdos) also at the workplace, in the Military, in university... Their social rules, their stratification and obsession with seniority, comparing their ages, wealth, possessions, their marks, everything... the social pressure on kids and in general on everyone to be better, the most xx the most xx...). The crazy mix of their traditional values and the contrast to the monstruos capitalism that devours all traditional values... traditional collectivism versus wild individualism...

From what I have picked up here and there, I THINK, don't quote me, the song is about training at an extremely young age in a very exploitive industry, his horrible experience while doing his military service, and his own mental health. Again, I am not positive about any of this. But, for Taemin, it makes a lot of sense. Especially the last two bits because his 2 years away was a nightmare that really messed with his mental health and depression. I hope this helps a wee bit. 😁

Just a note, In July (I think), Taemin updated his Instagram bio with a famous quote from Hermann Hesse's famous novel Demian “The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Who would be born must first destroy a world. The bird flies to God. That God's name is Abraxas.” I think his outfit with the feather hat represents the god Abraxas.

This is a coming out, dude! I'm so happy for Taemin! And you probably won't understand it as a westerner, but in Korea, until recently, it was believed that the reason for being gay was bipolar disorder. Korea has huge problems with treating mental problems, helping people who really need it, but at the same time "healing" the gays :( Sad and very scary :( They even "healed" it with shamans :( I hope so you realize how brave Taemen really is and yes, he really is a pioneer because he makes everyone in the industry realize that it's time for a change, it's time for the end of fictional stories in stupid concepts and we all need to hear real stories, real, sincere music!

I really liked your reaction but i think you, admittedly , missed what the visuals were about.
I think there are many things going on but dimply put its the guilt we struggle with when we make life choices, for whatever reason. The pain it can cause, emotional to physical. How we hold it all inside, put up with some things, the inner struggles. Im 70, ive been through a lot, i think i relate to this video. I am addicted to it.

Don't we agree that taemin is the best performer ever? the industry waited 2.5 years to appreciate real art. The MV is the best I have seen in all the music releases this year. the direction, the acting, the choreography, vocals absolutely everything was pure perfection and overwhelming at the same time. Guilty has displaced some of the releases I had as favorites. Taemin really shocked me once again. truly the king of kpop
