- It is an exciting and scary time for the goslings to have to leap off the nest to the ground and follow Mom. One by one all six goslings take that leap of faith and jump off the nest as Mom and Dad are calling them to come join them.
From RRP: "Our 6 goslings took the Big Leap early this morning.
They were very quick about it. Began around 7:40am CT (nest time). Mother Goose got up and left and all 6 went in a couple minutes with no further encouragement. Five of them showed up to the parents waiting below before too long. A sixth took longer and seemed to be unable to maneuver in the water. RRP was able to rescue this one and send it to their veterinarian to be checked out as it seemed to have an issue with a leg. Any further updates will be posted when we receive them."
Coverage from our cam operators captures 4 of the 6 goslings jumping and then we see five of them on the ground. It is hard work walking on the bushy ground but they manage to follow Mom and Dad as they head toward the water. Another goose lands in the nest briefly as Mom and Dad honk at it. The nest is now vacant so visitors can come and go as they please. Five goslings make their way to the water and swim for the first time with Mom and Dad. At the end of the video at 34:47 we see all six goslings in the water (one gosling was having difficulty swimming & has been rescued and is in the care of the vet right now) It is not know at this time which of the six goslings was the injured one.

Update from RRP April 27th 2023 " We're sorry to let everyone know that six didn't make it. In reviewing the footage, it appears the gosling hit a branch on the way down and suffered a severe spinal injury. We can remove logs and dead wood from the bottom of the tree, but we can't do much about large living limbs and we aren't going to discourage nesting in N2B. Five out of six goslings survived the jump. This translates to a survival rate of 83%, which is higher than average. It is sad to lose one gosling - really sad! - but the geese we're watching benefit as a whole from nesting on high. The rest of the family has left the nest area, but new geese are looking at N2B. We've seen them in the nest, floating below the nest, promenading up the stream, and foraging on the grassy banks on each side of the creek. We think that these might be the same geese that challenged HD in N1: of course HD eventually got annoyed and chased them away. We'll see what happens and if we can determine where the parents and goslings went after the leap of faith!

So glad all 6 made it. Last year was not as successful. Hope they are all okay after Mom stepped on one of them in the nest. All I could do was hold my breath and pray. ❣🙏

Such gorgeous birds, and this journey is always incredible to see, much less from a high nest! My farm was a rest stop for Canada and Snow Geese, on their winter migrations south, passing the Gulf Coast. I'll never forget the treat of flocks and flocks of them in my fields (noisy!). Sandhill Cranes, too. Such a natural wonder. But they didn't pay me for their campground, just ate my bugs and grass, slept, and flew out on me when I wasn't looking! 🤣

Loved how the parents lingered on the shore, as if looking for the sixth, and then stayed close in the water when the sixth seemed to have trouble moving on its own. I’m glad it was rescued and hope it survives. Hard not to think of the fifth baby last year that didn’t survive the leap. The whole leaping thing is so remarkable.

The cam operators do such a wonderful job capturing the movements of the geese and their precious goslings. Thank you, Lady Hawk, 😍for providing the video for us all to watch. Where I live I have the pleasure of watching several geese land for the mating season. One year I took a video of 2 male geese fighting over a female. With wings outstretched they battled it out and they weren't playing!
I remember my first year here. I wasn't aware of this yearly stop-over until I was awakened by the loud thud (crash landing?) of a goose on my roof! It became a sound I look forward to because I know they are back! It doesn't seem to take long before you see Mom and Dad escorting their goslings around the area. I've seen one couple with as many as 7. Then you'll see 4 adult geese taking their daily stroll with 12 goslings. This year I took pictures of them in my yard. I don't have grass so I assume they were looking for other seed types. I couldn't help myself from turning on the water hose and letting the water run into the curb just a little. It was cute to see several of the babies run to it and sit, some of them taking little sips. The goslings grow fast and, in the blink of an eye, one day they are gone. They're still here right now but, I know, it won't be long before they're on their way to another adventure.
Hi Connie that is such a great story with your Geese that visit each year. I bet that thud is quite loud!!! I also have geese at my lake by my house and the goslings hatched around a week ago - one family has 6 goslings and I watch them daily!! They are the cutest thing and they move so fast!!! The sprinklers were on this grassy area the other day and they all just loved that gentle spray on their backs!!! Enjoy them while you can they do grow up fast!!!

Hi Debi - yes I love watching the goose families each year and the goslings are just too cute for words!! I think jumping down from an eagles nest 70 feet high is pretty miraculous that they all survive!! I do hope #6 is going to be okay and will be rehabbed and will be released when it can take care of its self! I am sending you hugs and prayers and hope that you are doing okay ♥♥

Lady Hawk, I am so use to seeing these Geese at my local parks....laying eggs ground level and NO JUMPING!! by little chicks!!
Hi Bea I have goslings that have just hatched last week around where I live and they have have flat level ground which they nest in each year. No jumping by the chicks here either. I am currently watching them each day in a grassy place by my lake and they are adorable! One family has 6 goslings. It really will just depend where the Mom goose decides to lay her eggs - here she chose an eagle nest! Thankfully all six made it to the ground! One has an injured leg & was injured by RRP and is being treated at the vet right now and getting the best care!! ♥

On watching the "get ready" in the nest, one of the little ones was showing trouble with moving one leg was at an awkward angle. Prayers for the sixth little gosling that it is not badly injured and recovers quickly!!! 🙏🐦

This is the oddest goose nest ever. Last year was scary. Today no less. But... I hope the injured one can be healed. Hard to tell geese where to nest or anything for that matter. ❤

They're so cute hopping around on the nest with their tiny fluffy wings! Trying to figure out which way is better to jump. So cool to watch the parents leading the way, they have very protective and aggressive parents!

I was lucky enough to see this live and it happened so fast! Last year took a little while longer but these 6 took off and jumped right away! I hope #6 will recover and be fine - either rejoining this family and being adopted into a new geese family. So much fun watching them ❤ - I kept messing up my tasks at work! Ssshh! Ty for the video!

Hi Deanna no the gosling that is being treated will be cared for by the rehab facility and they will keep it until it is old enough to be on its own, There is no way they can tell which set of parents are which out there and there are a lot of geese!!! If the injuries are minor they may try and reunite with the parents - will wait and see what RRP says!

Wow. How insane really - but I know there are other baby creatures who must also make such crazy leaps of faith when it's time to go out in the world. Miraculous that most of the time it seems, the babes are okay from such a dangerous part of their growth... Did you see - right in the very beginning of the video, Mama Goose steps on the same gosling not once but twice! Poor baby! Wonder if that is the injured one.. The first step on was a prolonged one and it seemed Mama had lots of her weight on the poor baby. Could've been the fall also... In any case, how wonderful the injured one was rescued - hopefully the he/she will heal and be okay sometime soon.

Yes I saw that Mom stepped on a baby - not sure if it was the same one or not. It really does not matter how it got injured - the important thing is the help it is receiving and that the other 5 are healthy and made it okay!!! It is all over so quick...hatch and sleep overnight and then jump!!!

The littlest one on the nest seemed to get stepped on twice before mum flew off. 00:26 & 00:39 I wondered if it was hurt then or by the fall. 01:14 it’s not keeping up with the others. By 02:00 it’s definitely limping.
I saw that too - not sure it that caused the injury or if it is the same gosling!

I don't see how those little creatures can survive such a fall. Baby eagles fall from the nest and die.
