This was from a Paris Gala in 1958 when Callas’s voice was still in it’s Great period. By the 60s she was having problems with the voice, but still the greatest (watch her sing Vissi d’Arte in ‘65- still great) There are many theories why her voice deteriorated- probably overuse and things like long rehearsals in full voice and especially her complicated relationship with Onassis . She stopped singing until early 70s -tried for comeback in 70s concerts, but her Voice was in shreds, although Audiences still appreciated her Artistry. She became a recluse and died in her early 50s. She probably had only 10 perfect years, but they were enough to make her a Legend.

Actually, this is 4 or 5 years after her voice was in its great period. The real Callas voice disappeared with along with the weight. As Sutherland said, anyone who didn't hear Callas in her heavier days, didn't hear the real Callas voice.

This is a pity. I remember a few years before Pavarotti died...he missed some tones...and the audience were brutal to him....It's like classical piano....if you miss a singel note then your'e a looser.....This is why I didn't go all the way with piano...The people who dare to take on old master pieces have to be brave

@@Shahrdad actually this was at the near end of her so called great performances. She was only beginning to have difficulties with her voice, but her artistry was able to compensate, and was still considered the finest. Only a picky Opera perfectionist find faults would ignore the Beauty & emotional resonance she was able to produce.

@@robertn800 The true and great Callas voice (what is often called the "fat voice") disappeared by 1954, along with the weight. 1954 was also the beginning of the infamous wobble, which first was noticed during the recording of "forza del destino," when Walter Legge told her that if she didn't get the widened vibrato under control, they would have to hand out sea-sickness pills with every side. It was still a great voice till 1960, and between 54 and 59, she gave some of her greatest performances. But after the weight loss, the instrument itself was no longer the same.

@@Shahrdad well, what else would you expect “La Stupenda” to say, LOL * Maria before weight loss, weighed about over 200 lbs. It was causing her difficulty in moving around, her legs hurt, she got sweaty, plus her perfectionism wanted to look like the romantic figures she performed, & she wanted to be able to move & act (no one could accuse Joan of Acting) plus it gave her voice more of a lightness and she sensibly dieted down to below 120 lbs. (without a tapeworm). I have read virtually every book on Callas & most Opera critics, orchestral leaders, etc ascribe her vocal problems later on to her early performances in Wagner & heavy Operas, Aida, etc. contributed to her vocal decline.she wanted & did sing everything, but she realized they were hurting her voice & sang mostly bel canto Operas. Which is why Callas, and only Callas could sing & act a believable “La Traviata” 💔
