I had just gotten out of the Navy in San Diego in 1977. The signage brings back memories. Also, the cars in the price of gas were awesome. Southern California was a good place to be in 1977.
the politics of Reagan and Nixon killed our great middle class by closing the canneries, closing the shipyards..but not san san Diego's because conservative area(?).. all the great union jobs Reagan obliterated middle class.. worked at 14 in chain grocery store and after Reagan got re elected he tore our area apart because we were hard working blue collar minorities just doing our job..our store along with the 2 other chain stores closed, get real .. all our great fishermen lost jobs to Vietnam and other various slave labor nations.. so stop it .. open your eyes.. Greed Ovet People!..
mostly white-blacks had their area, as did the Mexicans. Then both of those demographics, squatted on the nice areas created by whites, and the rest is sad history. Fact.
Emissions started in California in 1968 catalytic converter‘s were on cars in 1975 so they were plenty of emissions. If you look at a lot of the cars they are from the 60s still running around so that’s part of where you get the smog. However businesses and factories almost had no restrictions on what comes out of the smokestacks and stuff.
I was 27 and lived in San Diego in 1977. By 1978 we had the 2nd gas shortage of the 70s. The first was 74. Those gas prices went from 63 cents to approaching a dollar in 1978 and we all thought we couldn't survive. Then again we went thru gas rationing, long lines at gas stations. Stations running out of gas, closed on Sundays. Mandatory 55MPH speed limit. I remember only being allowed gas on even numbered days by my license plate. I Remember the long long lines being the worst part of it. Waiting in lines for hours that were a half mile or more long. Finally getting to the pump and they run out of gas supplies. Still I'd take living in the 70s thru the 90s over this century. I don't see how this country is going to survive on its current path of self destruction.
Gas price was 59 cents. 22 years later in 1999, gas price was still under 1 dollar. 18 years later quadrupled. OMG, to me 1999 was still like yesterday. I didn't realize it was closer to 1977. I am getting old. Help....
God, I miss living in So Cal. Too bad the democrats screwed that state up so much I had to leave in 2010 after 27 years living in the IE and High Desert. I pray someday sanity will return to my beloved California and I can go home again. Nice upload. BTW, I had that same exact Star Wars shirt the girl is wearing. Damn, I'm getting old.....
Denise McNamara I agree completely. I’m only 17 years old and for most of my life, I lived in Bakersfield, CA, but after moving here to Los Angeles about 6 years ago, I’ve grown to realize how we’ve lost our way. As my generation becomes of age, I plan to try and get rid of this liberal bullsh*t and bring back what was once the way of life here in California, which wasn’t that long ago. I love the 1970s and I wish I was alive then, but unfortunately I wasn’t, so ill just have to make the best out of what I have now.
Back when California was inhabited mainly by Whites. Now California you got so many ethnecities. Hispanics, Blacks, Persians, Armenians, Koreans, Arabs, and the list keeps going. Notice I didn't say anything bad. I'm just stating out facts lol
At least in 1977 we had a Democratic President. We should've stayed strong and NOT let Reagan become President . It's because of that then is where we are now with the jobs gone.
Meanwhile NYC during this time was Hell on Earth, just cause LA looked like sunshine and smiles w. out a tent in site doesn’t reflect how other big cities were during these times. Chicago was even getting dangerous during this time too.
I was 13 years old in 7th grade. 56 now. Still here in California. Yes, it was once great. ❤
Jackson Browne was putting the Running on Empty tour together at about that time - fantastic epoch😀.

Los Angeles was actually great at one time.
Still is and will always. Just have to get the un-American Republicans out of country
@@bowtie3 Oh, and it's American to want to flush the country down the toilet like the Democrats want to do?

The girl with the star wars shirt looks like Laverne from "Laverne and Shirley"
She’s much prettier than Penny Marshall, IMO.
This was filmed in the 20th century back when Americans lived in California.
They still do. Don't be dumb and hateful.
Hateful...sounds of a melting snowflake.
@@johnhoward3042 u must be a liberal illegal lover!

Yep. They should build the wall on the California border.

Check out the smog ,this was before emission controls were on cars. U don't miss the smog at all but I do miss drive-in.

@@greggmitchell4173 I miss those prices. I wish we can relive that era once more again compared to how this state is now.

Shortage is what they tell you, like Nixon and his energy crisis. Christmas lights vanished and never really came back.
So cool for sharing!!

1:31 Teller machine? I don’t remember ever seeing one in the 70s. That was an early 80s thing, guess it took a while to hit the east coast
Fucking gas prices.....Jesus...
63 cents per gallon in today's money would be $2.56 per gallon.
I was there.
disappointed with the fixation on signs.
Disco Drugs sounds interesting...
I was 16
I was born a yr later
The video should be titled "signs in 1977" instead.. That's pretty much all it shows.

Filming signs makes no sense.
It does make sense depending on the signs, but some of these were pretty useless.
