  • In this summer-themed episode, Sherri and Chelsi discuss sewing tips while traveling or on vacation. They talk about past experiences while flying with sewing machines, fabric, quilt patterns, and notions. They also discuss whether it is possible to sew while on a family vacation with young children. They then share what foods make their ultimate summer BBQ menus and their favorite outdoor summer activities. We want to wish all of our listeners a happy and safe 4th of July!

Oh my gosh!! 😲 If they touched my sewing machine I'd lose my mind completely!! 🫣 🥹
I'm sorry Sherri you've gone through all that on Airplanes! I fly a lot (mainly international!) & OH boy! You have to be really careful!! I had to take my shoes off!! Then my socks too!! What! Really??? 🥴 They are most certainly are NOT careful with ANYTHING!!
Now Chelsie!! I LOVED how you said if anyone touched "Patricia"!! 🤣🤣 Your sewing machine I just laughed & laughed!! 🤣🤣 The look on your face was priceless!! I name EVERYTHING in my sewing room!! When I walk into my sewing room to sew I always say.... Wake up girls! It's time to go to work!! 🤣 My machine's name is Black Beauty!! Shes is a Bernina!! Oh she's BEAUTIFUL!! How blessed I've really been! Love all of you!! Thank you for ANOTHER amazing podcast!! ❤ I must admit this has been one of my very favorites!! I needed a good laugh today! Love all your quilts!! ❤❤
P.S. Love your Jersey Billy. 🎉🎉 You do an amazing job! What a wonderful way to bring your family together!! Thank you for everything!! ❤❤

Thank you so much for your podcast! I just love listening. I have a comment regarding PDF patterns vs paper patterns, a topic you discussed a few episodes ago. I think of it every time a new episode comes out and just keep forgetting to post. I prefer PDF patterns for several reasons. As mentioned by others, they do not take up space other than on my computer. On my computer, I keep them organized in a pattern folder and have subfolders within that folder. Some of my subfolders are for types of quilts (baby, Christmas, scrappy, designer, etc..). Other folders are for a specific pattern and within that folder I might have different versions of the quilt, such as different color ways or fabrics. I have a lot more patterns than I'll ever actually make, so having them digitally is very helpful. Because I have all Apple devices, when I am out shopping, I can pull up a pattern on my phone to see the fabric requirements or the photos. Also, as mentioned by others, you can certainly print the pattern if you want. I usually use my iPad, but when it's easier to have paper, I only print the pages I need, such as the cutting page, and I love that I can write all over it and still have the original pattern on my computer. I hope these tips are helpful to others. Thanks, again.

Great stories this episode. Once I got stopped by TSA because I had forgotten my Karen Kay Buckley blue handled scissors were in my quilt project carry on. I cried when they were going to take them away and the supervisor’s grandmother was a Quilter and he let me keep them. I still appreciate him when I cut with them.

I picked up EPP because it’s easy to travel with. I can sew on planes, in the car on long road trips, during my kids swim lessons. It’s such a great hobby. And yes you can bring tiny scissors on the plane.

Do what works for you. Some people pride themselves on not using pins or starch or specialty rulers but don’t let them make you feel like you should be able to do without them too. My folded corner blocks were terrible until I found the corner pop ruler and now they are amazing.

Looked at TH-cam videos and found a scrap quilt one by Sherri that led me to her 2019 block of the month on the blog. It’s so perfect for what I want to do with these. Thank you for all you share.

When we vacation in northern Wisconsin I make sure I have a bin of scraps, cutting mat, rulers and rotary cutter so I can work on that after the grandkids are in bed. When my hubby and I would drive to Florida to spend 2-3 weeks, I cut out and bag projects with the fabrics and patterns included. I try to plan ahead so I have enough projects to last me the 2-3 weeks ❤.

When my daughter went for her first time to the Miss Georgia pageant I stayed by myself in a hotel room (the contestants are in a dorm). Miss Georgia week is six days and is several hours from home. I took a baby quilt to cut out and piece in my hotel room. Each day housekeeping was so interested to see what I had accomplished the day before. It was a fun way to spend my time while the girls were in rehearsals and at events. PS. The town had two quilt shops so I did some shopping, too!

Loved Kelly's story. My siblings & I were lucky to be extremely well taught to sew by our mum. The first thing she taught us was to NEVER be barefooted anywhere near a sewing space. I still adhere to that today, now in my sixties. I have been garment sewing since childhood but only started quilting 4 years ago, thanks to coming across a you tube tutorial by Jenny Doan. I only ever take crochet when traveling- no pins, scissors or needles to worry about & no worries about encroaching on other people's space if in a confined area, and, to top it all off, I can pick it up & put it down as I please or need.

I didn't know Billy was taking a survey on the socks, shoes or barefoot sewing topic. For me I wear flip flops much of the time because I live in Texas and I chuck my right shoe off as soon as I start sewing. I do this at work too and then sometimes it takes me a minute to find that shoe to walk around so I don't look like an idiot! Definitely prefer to feel the pedal with my foot though .

I probably should've sent it to her directly. Billy, just to satisfy your curiosity, you did actually show it once before, but hadn't read the comment yet. I am also a cross stitcher as well as a quilter, so I travel with my cross stitch instead of quilting. Per TSA regulations, you can take scissors in your carry on, they must be less than 4 inches from the pivot point. I carry small snips that have some sort of cover for the points.
Happy 4th of July and enjoy your BBQ.

If we're ever are so lucky to meet I would tell you more... TSA type airport employees only open and inspect bags when required. It's so much more than bombs to be aware of. You would appreciate copyrighted patterns that were duplicated be found, trademarks are big business.

I sew barefoot mostly because I live where it’s soooo hot (central texas), so I only own one-two pairs of wool socks for snow travel 😊. I’m VERY aware of pins and needles tho…!!

Loved Kelly’s sewing journey. And I can relate except that I wasn’t brave like Kelly to ask for help.
I started quilting in 2004 and knew nothing about sewing or the internet. couldn’t afford classes so I borrowed a book from the library. I didn’t understand the terminology at all so needless to say my first attempt at making a quilt for my then 4 year old grandson ended up being a disaster. It stared falling apart a couple of years later. Quarter inch seams? Stitch length? What are those?
He gave it back to me and said fix it. I brought it home and threw it in a box in the closet. A few years later I pulled it out feeling more confident that I could fix it and started ripping and repairing. It turned out perfect and I regifted it to him on his 16th birthday 😂. It’s now a family joke on his birthdays.

Fun episode! For car travel (or life!) I prep my quilts that need binding so they're easy to grab and go. I pack a small ziploc with the binding, a bobbin of thread, a scrap of felt with a couple of needles, travel snips and a few wonderclips, and safety pin the bag to the quilt. :)

The only item that has ever been ruined, is my cutting mat. I had a checked in my luggage bag not sure what happened. I’m thinking TSA went through the luggage and then didn’t repack it safely.

I ALWAYS have shoes on and rarely ever go barefoot. When I was growing up my Dad would not be happy unless we had on our shoes. That's what I got used to so sewing without shoes would be really weird for me. Also, I am terrible about dropping pins on the floor. It's enough that I get stabbed in my fingers with pins/needles now and then, without also dealing with stepping on them. We have a three-story house built in 1925 with hardwood floors and stairs. If I was to walk around in socks I'd probably never survive all the times I go up and down the stairs. A friend was visiting us not terribly long ago. He was walking around in his socks and fell into our family room. Fortunately, it was only three steps but he really hurt himself.

We flew to Oregon last week. I had packed the gift I made for my sons wedding (queen sized camping quilt), and completely forgot my small gingher shears were in a carry on bag with some extra tops! But as long as they were 4” or less blades it was fine!! No problems at all. They are the g7? Size?? I think? I should send the pic of that camping row quilt! It’s sooo cute and perfect for them!

My Daughter is full of fun & spunk like Chelsi and I love her so much, I don’t think you understand how that relationship works or how much a Mother enjoys the spark & joy they bring to Everything!! Silly to be negative when they are obviously having fun ❤

Chelsi was quite talkative today! 😂 She’s been ill, so I think she’s finally feeling better and missed fully participating in the live cast, or maybe with her raising little ones she hasn’t had a chance to talk with adults for the past 2 weeks. Who knows and who cares, they’re both delightful and they’re partners.
