Great review Mike, I have the D300 and I like you am loyal to it as it's done me proud but I am now really thinking about the D500 and I believe your review has just tipped me into getting it. Thanks Mike. Terry.
Tested D500 against the D300s with the 17-55. Conditions were sunny. Used low ISO. Holy crap! Only big difference is the resolution when you pixelpeep but ohtherwise, saturation, color etc is with the D300s almost the same. Only at high ISO the D500 shines of course. Bottom line the D300s is a great back up if you have the D500.
Like you I have had a love affair with my D300s for many years. It has always given me outstanding images! I did try FX as an option and have a D3 in my collection. but I always returned to my D300s - maybe because I have so many wonderful DX lenses. Or, maybe because the D300s just handles so well in almost every situation. The D3 is a very heavy camera to drag over hill and dale for an entire day shooting. Which is why I have finally decided to buy the D500. I was starting to lag behind and this seems the perfect camera to get me up to scratch. It is the natural successor to the amazing D300s. I just hope I have made the right decision! Thank you for your video.
Sir, I am pretty much like you, I bought my D300s when it first came out and its the only camera I ever had. I havent used to as much as I like to but I should have...now that D500 is out, i am so interested in getting my hands on one...and still keep D300s. Awesome review....cheers.
Good review Doctor, I considered a 750 for a really long time (and even the 810), but waiting and getting the D500 has been a good call, the quality of the other features - Expeed 5, the AF module, the meter, etc - to me outweigh by far the "gains" of full frame.
I agree with all of this - I grew incredibly loyal to my D300 and it's still a go-to for lower importance pro shoots in good light, but the powerhouse D500 will be with me for a while.
The only d300s / d500 comparison on TH-cam! Thank you. I'm using a D300s and a Sigma 17-50 2.8. What lens are you using right now with the D500? Any standard zoom recommendations for DX?
I like the ISO button on top. On my D7000 the ISO button is on the left back and in the dark I ended up pressing the white balance button above it and some photos came out blue. Not much of a big deal since I shoot RAW but a hassle nevertheless.
Great review buddy, I'm loving crop sensor cameras myself, I use a canon 60d and also I'm in the process of getting a canon 5d mark 2 for landscape shots, I always buy used and I never buy new to market products, price isn't worth the extra gains IMO, I would like a Nikon full frame for landscape, but all my lenses are canon lol
yep have a D300s but will have to wait till they start showing up on the second hand market and a much lower price,i want a car thrown in for the new price plus they drop soo much used
Hi, are you able to post some sample photos of the D500 taken in low light and good with the following ISO: ISO1600, 3200 and 6400 settings. Prefer them to be unedited, processed from NEF (RAW) and with 'Normal' noise reduction setting in camera. Maybe can post at Flickr where i am free to view at full 20.9 MP resolution? Thanks i know it may be a lot to ask.
I've owned and used the D300 since it was released, and after 190k exposures it still works like a champ and looks great, it is buildt like nothing else. How do you feel about the build quality? Is the D500 as good as the D300? While I do want to upgrade to a D500 or D850, for now I decided to buy a proper lens instead. I ordered the new Tamron 24-70mm/2.8 G2, can't wait to get it. Then I can upgrade my camera body later. Maybe buy myself a xmas present...
The build quality of the D500 is great. However, there is just something about the D300/S camera(s). Super solid build, excellent controls and fun to shoot!
did you get it? i've been using mine for about 3 months professionally. i thought that the lower MP count would be an isssue, but i've never loved a camera as much, no problem at all
Hi all, here I am asking for your kind advice or suggestion: as a happy owner of an old d200 I wonder if upgrading to a used D7200,or waiting for the used D500 askings to decrease in the next 6 months.....The 7000/7100 step could be worth at some extent( not so if considering buffer for example) but as I still get eccellent pics with my oldy I´d rather go for a wider gap between the d200 and my future nikon. Thx a lot for your tips.
@@thurgogopro5338 Actually that's what I did ! I traded in my D200 for a preowned D300 by a reliable Nikon dealer. It fully fulfills my actual needs as an amateur user.
I want to ask you, how to replace the DSRL internal clock batteries in nikon? I have Nikon D300s, its been a while since i used it and it seems dead, can you do a video on this topic please, cheers.
The D300s was (and is) an absolutely wonderful camera. In my opinion is it still capable of doing professional work in many situations. It has acceptable low light performance, very good autofocus, and it is built like a tank. The D500 improves on everything. It has much better low light performance, fantastic focusing, and features (like automatic HDR) that didn't exist in earlier cameras. I am convinced that any mid range or above camera that was introduced from the time of the 300S (around 2009) to present is capable of doing MOST professional work. You just have to adapt the particular shoot and use your skills. Naturally, newer cameras make that process easier, but the skill set to take a decent photo isn't complicated, it is all about light and composition.
Hey Doc nice camera ... don't know if your familiar with that new Sigma ART 50-100 f1.8 ART for crop camera's. Its the best portrait lens available for crop camera's. Expensive but worth it.. I am saving up my pennies for it. Looks like you could afford one now. Check it out it would be awesome on that D500
Thank you for replying so quickly. How do you like that lens? I've heard nothing but good things about that lens. Also, I've been watching more of your very entertaining vids. Nice.
+Ray Geary Talking 14 bit losses compressed RAW files. With XQD 440mb/s card, limited to 200 by firmware. Not really a buffer but fast dumping. With 95mb/s SD card, any combination it slows down at around 30-35 images, still awesome. Jpegs the 200 kicks in.
D500 is borderline overkill. D300 beautiful camera to use. Maybe someday I'll get the courage to hand over the cash... Great camera for wildlife which is why I would purchase the d500.
I was watching this and when you showed the images of people walking towards you on the street I thought that looks so naperville haha, and then i saw the cat in the hat statue and i was like WAIT IT IS NAPERVILLE haha small world I live in Naperville too thats why i was laughing
D300 still going strong in 2024 💪🏻

Saw this video and picked one up yesterday! The D300s of course :) Great review, great camera!

D300s is still my go to...
Great review! Sports shooter here. can't wait for the local shop to get a new shipment in of some d 500s.
Great video! Just got a D700, love it! I like it so much I got a D300s, same control layout dx. I will have to wait for D500/D810.
Very good review. Thanks Mike!!!!! I want to buy this awesome camera but it`s out of stock everywhere. All the best!
Receiving mine by the end of the week! Very eager to try....

Hi Doc. Got a used D300s with an 18-105mm Nikkor for MYR 700 yesterday. That's about USD 175! Minor scuffs on body but what a bargain!
Azhar Ahmad fantastic!

What lenses are you using with your D500?
What do you think of the 16-80mm f/2.8-4 “kit” lens that comes with the D500?
Very nice review, well done!

Great video, can you please explain the 4th metering mode in detail(I am familiar with matrix/center-weighted/spot)
Andy Hurtig highlight metering is used when you don’t want to blow out your highlights.
Mike Kuna Thanks, Mike
I'm getting a D300 soon.
did you get it? i've been using mine for about 3 months professionally. i thought that the lower MP count would be an isssue, but i've never loved a camera as much, no problem at all
no, i got the D500 instead. went on sale during holidays.
Very nice review. Thanks a lot.

indigoblue555 both are great but the D500 is awesome.
Mike Kuna Thanks Mike, that was my thought as well, I´m going to wait for D500 getting affordable :)
I personally wouldn't consider a 7200 as an upgrade, cheap plasticky build in my opinion get a 300 or 300s
@@thurgogopro5338 Actually that's what I did !

I am sorry, but I am not a Nikon tech. Your problem may require factory service.
How does the Nikon D300s compare with subsequent Nikons up to the D500?

When the price will go down and I'll be a bit better in photography this is the one I'm going to get!
I think they'll come out with a D500S with a pop-up flash next yr... Have you used the snapbridge feature yet?
+Nexis4Jersey I haven't tried snapbridge, but the reviews of it sound good.
Did you buy the 16-80mm lense?
+Nexis4Jersey No, but I am thinking about it. I read somewhere that the bokeh was so-so, therefore I resisted... However, I'm still considering it.
I would like it if they or sigma or tokina came out with a 14-80mm F2.8 to F4 lense...
+Mike Kuna , according the Angry Phographer, 16-80 is a no no
Good review. Thank you.
happy for you!

Dr. Mike, what lens do you have mounted on your D500 ? Is it the Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 ?
Yes indeed.
Thank you for replying so quickly. How do you like that lens? I've heard nothing but good things about that lens. Also, I've been watching more of your very entertaining vids. Nice.
+SuperLumberjock thanks. The lens is great and a great value.
D300s+sigma18-35f1,8 ART awesome !!!!!!!!
youre a legend!
It's got a great buffer. Endless According. To angry Ken Great or wildlife. Sports and cropping

Ray Geary It’s a 200 RAW picture buffer. And on 10 fps it takes 20 seconds to fill it. That’s with the XQD card. The SD is a little slower.
