I think the biggest factor in this being so believable initially is that WoW is no stranger to having strange and creepy easter eggs and glitches. I've never played WoW myself, but I've heard of plenty of the creepy secrets you could find in the game's early years, including children NPCs that led players to demonic symbols, a cut dungeon featuring corpses and torture devices that could still be found in-game through clipping out of bounds. Not to mention Blizzard doing similarly weird Easter eggs in their other games. If you go into the video with that context in mind, it's not hard to imagine that such a dark and obscure Easter egg could exist in the game somewhere that people just didn't find until now.
My favourite thing about the demonic children eater egg is that when they form a pentagram you hear a voice line from C'thun, one of wow's lovecraftian old gods, telling you your death is close.
also one of the end game bosses being an abomination of slaughtered woman and children that were stitched together and resureccted and you can hear their screams in the background ambience of the raid (search "thaddius ambience" on youtube if you want to hear for yourself)

I've played WoW since 2007, and I fell for it too. From the start I found it suspicious as fuck. Stonetalon isn't such an abandoned zone that everyone (in certain areas) dying would be missed. I often played in those hours and went to those zones. My first thought when he brought up randomly dying was that either a mob/player got him, or he was lying. A GM wouldn't bother, a glitch like that wouldn't exist, a repeating easter egg like that wouldn't exist. After that I felt the same as Pyro. For references in names, it'd be a bit suspicious if they went unnoticed, but tying it to the dev being a murderer is an omega-reach.
theres a dev tool that they can use to auto kill some characters they were suspecting to be botting without outright banning them. i did also did something similar when i was working as a game master and customer service guy for an mmo before.
