Im in my final year studying computer games technology at university. I dont know how it works in canada but It wasn't that difficult, I recommend you start learning the Unity and UDK engines so you're on the right track. Also start learning to code/script - C# in Unity is a good place to start (javascript is the slightly easier one, but use C#). C++ is the mostly used programming language in the industry, if you can learn the basics now that would put you ahead of everyone else your age!
My uni didn't teach this either. I found the solution by fluke/pissing around lol. You're not the only one mate; The learning is up to us, uni's are only good at handing out certificates that will make us employable.
I will say thank you AndyThePinoy for the collision solution :). I've modded quite a bit for Dungeon Defenders, and Unreal and can you believe it I didn't know that trick XD. I will say this to everyone, if you want to get into setting up a specular, normal, or ambient occlusion, just import those into udk and attach them to the material you set up. Simple as that. The challenge is making a good normal map though :P. And that requires a good UV map and not a simple flattened out one.
thanks!. i have got a problem with materials, because the texture was not loading in the preview and either in the mesh, but it is just a matter of mobile materials.. just added the material in the base material for mobile and texture works for both.
Great video! but when I try to import a dialogue box appears and reads: ASE Importer Error: Did you forget to include geometry AND materials in the export? Faces 96: Texture Coordinates(Channel0:) 0: Any advice? Thanks
Could i ask what program you are/were in at college? I am trying to learn UDK and other 3D programs so that i can create video games when i am old enough to enter college (I am 15). Is it difficult to get into a college for 3d design?
Im having problems with the UVmap. Everytime i try to render texture it says "missing map targets" the following elements do not speficy a Target Map Slot: Plane01: Diffuse Map? My model is a western hotel that has all the textures and shit. but still after exporting it to UDK it goes bonkers. Any ideas?
I cant save my project after importing like this... It says "Can't save. Graph is linked to object in external map package.Try to find the chain of refrences to that object (may take some time)?" Any suggestions?
Nice tutorial..pay attention to what he have checked for exporting the .ASE file. and check exactly what he have checked. I had to redo it because my model was coming out grey the coordinates was missing. Once I made my export .ASE window look exactly like he had it I had no problems
Greetings. I export my model as an .ase file (no errors). Then i try to import it to UDK and this message pops up: "Generated/Imported vertex count ratio (533/319) exceeds expected percentage (67.08 percent vs 25.00 percent expected)". What is wrong?
If you followed this tutorial step by step then you right it will give you an error message saying " Can't save...blah blah... try to find chain of references to that object" then rather than importing your lugia into Untitled_1 try making your own package by clicking on 'new' in the content brower then when your package has been given a name, click ok. now save that new package by right clicking on it and saving. then repeat the steps to import the lugia model. it should save the map now.
Very clever and simple and very good tutorial! I'll never be afraid of importing files from 3Ds Max to UDK. Thank you! :D
yeah lol i spent ages looking at forums, quite annoying really but im glad I could be of help mate - thanks for watching :)
Awesome! Thanks dude, this is all I want and all I need right now.

Awesome tutorial! Really well explained.

awsome job man, big thanx
Great tutorial, tnx man.
Your awesome man. Thanks!
Cheer bud, will help with uni work

@meetajhu your welcome mate :)
@ampaholic thanks for watching :)
and everytime before you open that map you must first open the package with the lugia model or it cant load everything the map needs.
This is an ASE error, check your ASE export settings again in 3ds max - Make sure Mapping Cooridnates and Mesh normals are checked.
Cheers man been trying to get some models to work that wouldn't import properly.
THANKS a MILLLION i have been wondering how to map my uvs for ages. Im still a little puzzled on how you can do it for cryengine 3 tho
ho come u can see your textures in the 3d vieport? i have always only grey textures....

are you refering to your udk project or the 3ds max project?

Is this easier than exporting to Cryengine?
thumbs up for the Pokemon!
Thanks :)
@ThatEmoKid92 thank you :)
i love you :)
now all i need help finding is how to export from zbrush to 3dsmax with textures and model
it would be the same.
