    When I bought this, I thought I would be using it to exclusively make synth sounds but it didn't work out that way.
    Really, the real strength of this pedal for me, is mixing low levels of synth sounds in with the guitar signal.
    It becomes it's own unidentifiable thing. Sounds like guitar but yet there is something a little strange about the sound of it.

      I think you've discovered the key to using pedals in a way to make you sound unique; If all you go for is out of the box sounds, it might sound good, but It also sounds exactly like everybody else that bought the same pedal.

      Thanks man! I do try, but I really appreciate that.
      I do think that too many others aren’t discussing how to actually apply it to your rig. For me, that’s been the tricky bit.

    Good to see all the More we're going to be able to do with this pedal..Have my 1/8 in.TRS MIDI cable,but waiting for the SY-200.So Glad it has MIDI capabilities now..And Presets..I'll set-up my most used patches,like you did so I don't have to scroll thru all of them..Thanks for That...I Had the SY-1... And was sending my electric guitar to my modeler from the send on the back of it..The Out from SY-1 went to a Sterio NUX Atlantic Delay and Reverb...Made a mono 1/4 in.plug on 1 end of the cable from the SY-1... To a TRS plug going into the Atlantic...Don't know if I was really getting Sterio..But it sure sounded good...Sterio Out from the Atlantic went to the mixer..Not only can you use a expression pedal...Using a Momentary switch -you can Hold a Note or Chord as long as you like...And play your electric guitar over that...Now I'll need to get a Delay with MIDI for the SY-200..Been playing MIDI guitar since I could get my hands on 1..Now You can use Any guitar you want ...AND NO Tracking Delays either ..It Doesn't get Better than That...

    Hi Dave. Nice demo. One thing I´d like to know is the signal-routing. If you have a signal chain of overdrives, wah etc, and would like to have a separate effects "pool" only for the sy-200.

    • @DaveWebbMusic
      @DaveWebbMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate.
      That’s totally doable. They’ve designed it to integrate.
      Basically you can route your direct guitar through the sy200 and into your overdrives etc. and send the effect level to your seperate effects.
      But that’s where it’s left to suggestion. I’m still playing with it myself, but I think this is what you could try.
      You could send the effect to a second amp or whatever.
      You could route the effect into a combiner.
      I think (will have to try) you can put your overdrives etc in the sy200 loop and change that to your direct level, and then blend the 2 together.
      Off the top of my head, that’s a few options you could try. Would love to hear how you go!

    This is why the BOSS SY-300 much more superior over the sy-1 and sy-200 because it has tons more control over your synth sounds, as you can tweak every little thing and it has built in effects to route different ways etc..

    • @DaveWebbMusic
      @DaveWebbMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The SY-300 does look pretty great.
      My only issue with it is that you need the pickup. I’ve not used one, so I don’t have much to back that opinion. Lol
      SY-200 is amazing for what it is, especially at its price.

    • @BrockDavisson
      @BrockDavisson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DaveWebbMusic nah the sy-300 don't use the pickups. The sy-300 is the original, the one that the sy-1 and sy-200 is based off of. It came out in like 2015.

    Thanks. I have a questions.
    Can i use my EV-5 expression pedal in it. In the PDF of the pedal on Boss website it's mention :
    You can connect a footswitch (FS-5U, FS-6 or FS-7, sold separately)
    to the CTL 2, 3/EXP jack, and use it to tap-input the tempo or to
    switch memories.

    Got some questions.
    1- How does the Sound Hold function work? Can I simply play on it while holding a synth or pad sound i.e.? And when the hold mode is active, is it possible to change the preset without breaking that held sound?
    2- Are the factory presets actually created with the settings that are also tweakable by the user? I mean, if I delete a patch, it's gone for good or can I simply create the same with the available settings?

    • @DaveWebbMusic
      @DaveWebbMusic  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good questions!
      1 - Yes, that’s exactly how it works. The effect sound holds and you can play over top with your guitar tone.
      I’ve not tried changing patches while holding, but I’m going to say no it won’t work. The hold function is per patch, so I’d imagine the hold wouldn’t carry over between changes.
      2 - factory presets use the built in settings. You can do whatever you like with them eg. delete, duplicate, overwrite, recreate… etc.

    Hi Dave, thx for your review of the SY-200. I tried out the pedal at my music dealer's today and wasn't really satisfied. Though the D. Level was set to a minimum there was always the guitar sound in the background, too. Is there a way to eliminate the guitar sound completely, e.g. when selecting an organ sound? In your examples I can't hear the guitar.

    • @DaveWebbMusic
      @DaveWebbMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      When you set the direct level to 0, it will be completely gone, and all parameters can be saved for each patch.
      My guess is that the direct level knob was down, but the patch level had been saved with it up. The knobs don’t relate to the level while you’re changing patches.
      Think of the knobs as ‘quick access’ scrolling to set a patch. Then save, and your patch is set! 🤘🏼

    Can the midi jacks send midi note data, to drive external synths (or into Ableton piano roll?) - or can I play sy-200 patches via external keyboard (although not sure why one would do the latter)

      Awesome! How exciting.
      From what I can tell, you can either add effects in the loop such as reverbs and delays to be on the SY200, or you can route either the dry or wet signal out of it, essentially splitting the signal.

    • @DaveWebbMusic
      @DaveWebbMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s amazing isn’t it!
      I think I understand what you’re asking.
      None of the 128 presets are set in stone, you can change effect and dial in something completely different, eg. organ instead arpeggio and save it in that preset position.
      Then, say you have 5 favourites that you always use, put those in slots 1-5, or 25-30, basically wherever you want them, then in settings you can change the ‘extent’ option to scroll through that range effects. So it scroll from 1 to 5, then straight back around to 1 again.
      I hope that helps.

      Hey mate. Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying the videos.
      As far as I am aware, the SY-200 sequences and arpeggios are set. It offers a few variations, but you can’t change them.

    Hi Dave, quick question for you (or anyone else reading this that may have a solution.) If I hold out a note or chord and switch programs there is a short gap where the sound drops out while the next program loads. It's a very short gap, but enough that it is noticeable (and annoying). Is there any way to get rid of the gap (i.e. gapless switching) so that if I switch programs mid song via my midi pedal the guitar doesn't drop out for a split second? You have a section in the video where you demonstrate midi, but you stop playing each time before switching programs so I wasn't able to tell if you had the same issue. Note: the gap is there whether using a midi pedal or manually switching programs via the memory footswitch on the pedal or the memory knob, so it doesn't appear to be an issue with the midi pedal. The pedal is great, but the gap thing is enough to deter me from ever switching programs mid song live, which was a big part of why I bought it. Any help appreciated!

    • @DaveWebbMusic
      @DaveWebbMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man. As far as I can tell, you can’t get rid of the gap. End of the day, it just takes that long to load the next patch.
      If you have effects on, such as delay and reverb, having them spill over into the next patch will help cover it.
      I know that’s not ideal, but unfortunately in this case I don’t think there is a way around it.
      Mess with your guitar sound that’s blended in, mess with the effects, and try to get it as best you can.
      I know the frustration with the gaps in switching, trust me! If you’re changing mid song, change when there’s drum fill, or a big vocal section. It helps.

    Question on the Mem/Ctrl 1 switch. I was reading the manual, and saw the hold function of the switch could be reassigned. Can you reassign both the tap and hold functions? Say I had a 2 button external foot switch for memory up and down, could I assign the tap to a pitch bend, and the hold to the sustain setting? Or would the tap always have to be either memory up or down?

    • @DaveWebbMusic
      @DaveWebbMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I can tell, an external 2 button foot switch, 1 will always be memory up/down, but I think you can reassign the other.
      As for the switch on the pedal, it’s much the same. Memory up/down always, and can reassign the ctl1 button.
      But I did just realise that you can choose to remove the Memory up/down from that button so it will act only as the ctl1 button. Eg. Hold, pitch etc.

      It has heaps of bass effects. Much like the SY1 there a few that sound very bass like.
      Yeah you can create and save you’re own presets, or tweak and save any of the loaded patches. Of course you need to work within the parameters of each sound, but it’s super flexible and customizable.

      I wonder if it's just the connector (mono connector). Like if you took it to a music tech and they swapped out the connector, if it'd play stereo sounds. Because the effects are stereo, right. The same effects on SY300 play stereo. Also, you probably know this, but you have to use a stereo cable (most guitar/mic 1/4 cables are mono)@@DaveWebbMusic

      @@DaveWebbMusic Why is that? Because people will buy it anyway? They have competition that does run in stereo, so I'm not sure why it's a smart business move. I think it probably just didn't allow them to keep the price at $300.

      @DaveWebbMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JeighNeither Firstly I don’t understand why they didn’t make it stereo. Surely it could have been integrated in whilst keeping the cost down.
      And secondly I am of the opinion that most successful companies (this is not directly only at BOSS) hold off on releasing everything at once. Plus they have the SY1000 which has stereo in/out.
      This SY200 is so great I feel like it would pull focus too much if it had everything.
      This is entirely an opinion of course!

    Has anyone tried recording with this pedal in front of a Boss Katana 100 amp via usb in a DAW? I am getting odd results where the dry signal is fading or popping in and out even with the dry signal saved to 0 in the pedal preset. I am new to recording, so that's not helping I'm sure haha, but I was curious. Maybe using an actual audio interface instead of the usb could help?

    I know the sy200 excepts midi note input but does it also SEND midi notes out?

    • @DaveWebbMusic
      @DaveWebbMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      It does send & pass through midi messages, meaning you change presets and CC values on other gear, but you won’t for example be able to record the arpeggiated midi notes into a DAW. It’s just PC & CC values, much like any other midi guitar pedal.

      I’ve definitely tested passing midi through. Works great.
      I haven’t specifically done messages from the SY200, but the option in the pedal is the same as any other BOSS unit.
      As for sending and recording midi notes, I don’t see how it would work. The midi in/out is designed to send messages, not notes. And the main outputs are audio only.

    Hello, I have Boss sy 200. Knob D. The level is saved in all matches automatically depending on the position of the knob. But, knob E.level in all patches is displayed at 50% regardless of the position of the knob. Is this a bug? Or am I doing something wrong? Maybe you need to change something in the menu? Please help!

    • @DaveWebbMusic
      @DaveWebbMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, when you write the patch to the preset, the knob value you set is saved, and will be recalled at that value because it is a preset. The value will change when you turn the knob, but you will need to save it again if you want it to stay that way.
      Think of the knobs as an easy way to adjust the presets you save.
