Tony was a man of the highest integrity who was always concerned about equal opportunity for everyone. He believed that all human beings were born equal and had no time for inequality in all of its manifestations. He wanted peace for all and hated the evils of war. A wonderful man. Rip Tony Benn if we had more men like this we as the human race would be far better off .....They say socialism never worked, can never work and is destined to fail .....Well let's just look at how capitalism has worked ? Never knew Tony had been on the Late Late. I did my Leaving Cert that year, maybe that's how I missed him because I was busy studying. It's a real gem and I'm proud to be the first to comment.
I was born in 1975. As a young boy, I remember the fences between the houses on my estate a rabbit could hop over. By the end of the 80s they were all 6 foot fences

George Galloway reckons that if Tony Benn and Bob Crowe had lived to see the Brexit referendum that they would have added between one and two million votes to the vote for Brexit.
Tony Benn was my first political hero back in 1968 when I was 15 years old and in 2023 I find myself thinking how did we let stands fall so low, we need better
I wrote to Tony back in the 1980s explaining how unemployment, mental health and poverty was dragging myself and my family down. Within a week I received his reply. He encouraged me not to give up. He said I should exploit what little was available to me and finally, he told me to join the Labour party. Amazingly, he added to include the letter of reply and my membership would be taken care of. The thing is, I was so touched, I wanted to keep his reply forever so I never did join the party officially.
I wouldn't necessarily have agreed with everything he said, but he was that rare thing, a politician with integrity, who wouldn't compromise his views, no matter his audience. Parliament needs more honest people like him.
I was wondering the other day where all the great statesmen were, then watching this I realised they have all gone, people of compassion, understanding, and a sense of duty, Tony had it all and must have sickened by brash politicians looking only for self advancement.
Im on the far right, i make thatcher look like a communist, but i always loved tony benn because on certain subjects im interested in he told the truth.
Which is the best way too be, far too many people are either strictly right or strictly left and cant admit or even listen too anything the other party has too say even if it could be logical
Sorry to rain of the parade but Tony Benn was bad for Labour. He failed to see where the prevailing winds was blowing and his programme largely doomed Labour in the late 70s and 1980s.
+Time No you didn't. If you listen again he described Thatcher's ideas using the adjective 'evil' and then used 'clambering over each other' as a metaphor. He did not say this was an idea. Tony Benn was an intelligent man who was educated at Westminster School and Oxford University and would not use a metaphor as a noun.
It's not 'basic A Level economics'. It's basic A level neoliberalism. It's a philosophy; a theory that is certainly not objective. Anyone with half a brain will look at it and witness the immense destruction to humanity that this theory has had; hundreds of millions living in starvation, half the world living on slave-wages, trampled under the boot of the rich and powerful, Third World nations enslaving their population for the benefit of the rich West. It doesn't take a genius to realise that capitalism doesn't work. It might work well for the wealthy, Western middle-classes, the lucky few, but it fucks everyone else over in its path.
Tony Benn was very principled, but he didn’t understand economics. All the faults he laid at capitalism were actually the fault of corporatism and government meddling/corruption.
Never have we needed another Tony Benn than now 2022 Named my son after this great man
Wow he was and is his my hero.

the poor? are you referring to old people or people not working?
@nickjupp6868
Yes. The poor can be old people, the unemployed, and people holding down two jobs on zero hour contracts. What’s your point?
A great man who didn't want to be a hero, but just wanted others to be able to determine their own lives and peacefully co-exist with others.
100% spot on. no empathy, no society.
he was a great man with great reasoning.
He always stood up for the underdog when nobody else would. A true socialist and an inspiration to everyone.
