    Back in 1988 we did family trip with our Wartburg. Bulgaria -> Romania -> Hungary -> Czechoslovakia -> GDR -> Poland and back. Very memorable trip. Saw Berlin wall before to get torn down. Later I had opportunity to get combi for low money and I passed on it. Regrets.

    I had two of those. The last one had a double barrel carburetor. It went like crazy. Had a fairly big problem with the radiator being in the back. It tended to heat up in the summer in the city traffic. I loved the freewheel feature on it. You felt like driving a sled down hill.

    In UK about 1976, the Russian Professor at Durham University had a 2 stroke Wartburg just like this, I just loved the sound from the engine and exhaust, I did note he was always tinkering in the engine compartment with the engine running! These deserve to be kept on the road so we can all hear them again. This even beats my Yamaha 2 stoke for sound!

    This one is from 1984. Black bumpers with small endings, black front grille - but old type without built-in radiator. This is the only year they made it look like this.

    Interesting car. During communist East German times, the Wartburg was a more exclusive car for the "gehobene Schicht" or, as we would say, those a little "more equal" than others. The Trabant was more the car for the masses. I can't get over the radiator being behind the engine!

    Wartburgs were imported into the U.K. from 1960s onwards. 353 was called the "Knight". There is an active IFA Club which has just held its Red Oktober event at the Crich Tramway Village. By the way, your English is excellent. I think that you must have lived over here for a while. Best wishes.

    • @norbertdelamancha

      @@mathiasmustillo Because the sparking plug coming dirty, oil or something, and doesn't make it spark, no ignition in the cylinder.
      I can hear on the sound, it is different, its hard to explain.
      You can hear from 0:40...

    • @tuomashelin555
      @tuomashelin555 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's easy to test whether all cylinders are firing. Remove the wire from spark plug while the engine is running, one at a time, and you'll hear if it makes a difference in the engine.
      Personally, I don't agree with norbertdelamancha.
      That engine sounds ok to me, apart from a slight high pitch clang, that's a sign of piston having been overheated sometime in the past. Usually it's piston in cylinder number one, closest to the radiator, that has had its top stuck in the cylinder. Use a 3% oil-to-fuel mixture, not more or less, and it won't matter.
      Extra tips:
      - the fuel pump tends to stop working properly and floods the cylinder number 3 - this is easily noticable in the lack of power, the engine won't accelerate and you'll reach 80 km/h, barely, with full throttle
      - when driving uphill and the engine starts to work hard, you might hear a tingling sound that's a sign of the ignition advance being timed wrong (too early). Wartburg climbs uphill easier when you just put it in full throttle and keep it there, you'll hear how the engine starts to "breathe" and pull effortlessly with full throttle

    • @johannstockmannday3448
      @johannstockmannday3448 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Norbertdelamancha is right, the engine is changing between running on two and three cylinders. It an easy fix b checking through the ignition system. The car actually has 3 contact breakers. The engine here seams to run on three cylinders after a while, so maybe a plug meeds cleaning. A very nice car too. I love my 1974 Wartburg 353. Mine is right side steering with floor gearchange. 👍

      By 1976, the majority would have been SAAB 95/96 or these Wartburgs, known as Wartburg Knight/Tourist over here. The Wartburgs weren’t huge sellers, but they were a reasonably common sight. I think the premix two-stroke at petrol stations would’ve been more for motorbikes.

      The radiator is behind the engine to make the radiator higher because it was originally intended to be thermosiphon. However the final production was made with a waterpump. The engine is like a DKW, which where fully thermosiphon in their older models.
