I'm not pregnant and am nowhere having kids at the moment (aside from furbabies), but I found this super fascinating! I will definitely consider using cloth diapers when I have children
TheJadeDragon you should! I used cloth diapers for all 3 of my kids and I totally recommend it!
Neither am I, but Nikki’s videos are so informative. I’ll be more knowledgeable when I do decide to have children in the future.
I am in the same boat. I don't have a partner, and I am no where near becoming pregnant. My future baby does have a small collection of cloth diapers.
Cloth diapers are a great way to save money and protect the environment! You are saving thousands of dollars and preventing thousands of diapers from being put into landfill. Such a great video 🥰
I’m stuffing and folding my diapers right now so this was PERFECT timing 👌🏼
Love this video and the realness. I feel like cloth diapering gets the same stigma as breastfeeding....in the way that people think it has to be all or nothing. We put cloth ones on my son for daytime and use bamboo based disposable ones just for night and travel. It works for us and is a happy middle ground. And buying them second hand is super affordable. I go back and forth between loving insert diapers and all in one ones. Thanks for bringing awareness to a topic that intimidates so many people!
A great tip for night nappies is little lambs bamboo nappies. They are a 2 in one system. I used a fleece cover as these I found last the best over night. It can be very hit and miss and we sometimes used natural disposables at night too. Wool covers are great for nighttime too.
Sold. I’m ordering them now. Nothing makes me more mad than buying something just to throw it away.
Sarah Barber 👏🏻👏🏻
@@NikkiPhillippi hi nikki... Im from uruguay and ache like u... But here cant fund a doctor that dont want to overload with medicine... Can u pls explain ur pain journey to us? What u have, aches, injuties, meds exercise vitamins u use for pain etc... Thanks
agreed!! do you use tampons or pads?
Once he’s older and needs more absorbency, I really recommend Muslin Flats from Green Mountain Diapers! They work from babyhood through potty training. ❤️ Love that you’re helping cloth become mainstream!
Marisa Anderson I LOVE GMD! 👏🏽👏🏽
We loooooooved cloth diapering our daughter when she was little. We saved all the diapers and are now going to use them on baby sister. We're hoping to use them from birth this time, last time we used them from about week 5.
Have you looked into EC (elimination communication)? We did a lighter/easier version where we sat baby on the potty (from 5 weeks) whenever we changed her diaper, and after a short while she totally caught on and would from then most often go poop on the potty. It saved us a lot of hassle having to deal with poopy diapers. I urge everyone to give it a go, it's easier than having to learn baby's signs and signal (ec at its core) for when they need to go potty.
Pleaseeeee make a video on the reusable wipes ! I just had my 3rd child and since i was pregnant i was looking into using them while I’m home (which is always, cause I’m a stay at home mom 😅, even before the ‘unnameable’ situation) ! Loved this video ! Much love 💗
I'm due in August to have my first and I looked into cloth diapering about 5 years ago when we first decided we wanted kids. Now that we're finally here, I have them in my Amazon cart and I'm so excited to finally get to cloth diaper! Your passion for cloth diapering at the beginning of this vid makes me so happy! I'm glad I'm not the only one excited to do poopy laundry! 😁
I have a 6 month old & he’s started playing with solids recently. We started having a hard time getting the diapers clean & we started storing the dirty diapers in a trash can with water & vinegar. When I throw them in the washer I dump the vinegar water in with them & do a rinse & then heavy wash. This makes them so clean! Before we were doing 2 heavy washes.
Careful that vinegar can wear the elastics and PUL and snaps, just rinse the poo and then do 2 washes cold then warm
Sprayers are great for the poo
A trick for poo diapers is to place a disposable (or fabric/ one reusable wipe) square inside the diaper. If you are using disposable the majority of the poo is simply thrown away. If using fabric these can be separated into a soaking bucket first. I have also seen people reuse and wash the extra over of material if the diaper is just wet, but throw away if soiled! All up to preference but makes a huge difference and means a lot less scrubbing or extra washes equalling the diapers lasting longer!!
I'm 22 weeks pregnant now and have been dabbling with the idea of cloth diapers but thought it would be a lot of work. You changed my mind, this seems to have so many benefits! My baby boy will have some cute cloth diapers :) Thank you!
You look like a legit goddess wow. Im so sorry your neck has not been well at all. This pandemic is giving me the most gratitude for the littlest things like home workouts, and going to the store and not leaving without not getting half of my grocery list. Never ever take anything that’s hard to do right now and go places. Having to hold your baby is the littlest thing and so sad you couldn’t. I want to wish you a Happy Birthday your a Taurus and I’m Gemini so we’re gonna have our first quarantine birthday’s together i hope it’s a great day nonetheless!
I loooved this video, Nikki! Thank you for being so real, and putting this out there even though you don't feel super well versed in the topic yet. I'm cloth diapering my first, and it's been tough (mine have been leaking a lot - but I did get them secondhand). I appreciated that you said you don't do anything special to wash them, as that was a huuuge reason I was afraid to start using cloth diapers. I agree that it feels really good to use them, and that disposables do seem like throwing away money. Thank you for uploading!
Came back to this video right after ordering my cloth diapers for my 10 month old. I’m so excited. Just got a few to try out and make sure it’s for us before buying a plethora...but I’m seriously so excited to start this!
I love how absolutely candid you are about motherhood and everything that goes with it. I am not a mother, but I love seeing the realness in preparation for motherhood.
Love seeing a popular TH-camr talk about this! Our first baby's due 7th July and I've been researching cloth nappies for months and slowly building up my stash ❤️ it's such a lovely thing to be passionate about too, there's so many friendly cloth bum mum's out there! Xx
I started cloth diaper with one to try it out.(blubbery) Immediately loved it. Theres just this feeling about washing and folding my baby's diapers that i can explain. Makes me feel happy. blubbery is a bit pricy for my budget. so i bought the alva baby pack. Been using them for 2 months now and have no complaints. Small tip sunbleach will take off all staings. When poop gets more like poop poop.
There is nothing more satisfying than a line full of clean nappies drying in the sun. I loved it and loved putting them all together when dry.
I’ve cloth diapered 3 babies from infancy to potty train. We use Alva pockets exclusively! What I would say is : yes 18 if fine! BUT if you can have closer to 30, the diapers will get used less per child, and will not need replaced for YEARS. I have the same diapers that I bought for my first baby and they still are in wonderful condition. I don’t baby mine either! We use tide, and dry in the dryer on medium heat! In 2019, I had my 2year old, 1yr old, and newborn ALL in Alva cloth diapers! Saves us thousands. Formula poop is water solvable just like breastmilk poop. :)
Seventh generation is a natural detergent and they have a heavy duty one that works great for cloth diapers! I have a friend who used it on her diapers and I plan on using it once my little one is here.
I tried seventh generation and it made my washing machine smell really bad and mildewy 🙁
Danielle Snow try tide free and clear!
I don’t have a baby. Don’t plan on having a baby but here I am.. watched the whole thing! Love ya Nikki! Lol
thank you for the information. I'm pregnant and i've been tossing the idea of cloth diapering around. I think im at least going to try if it doesnt work its not the end of the world. I love how you always have a realistic approach to life. Random but I live in Nashville too :)
Omg!! Thanks so much for this video! 😍
My baby is born in December, I’m planning on doing cloth diapers. Boom, this video popped up! Love how you explain things! 😅
Thank you! I'm due in October and I was on the fence about cloth diapering....now I'm fully team cloth diaper! xo
I have a 12year old! I have absolutely no need for diapers but watched bc I love you!💙🐘🍑
Me: not even close to being able to have a baby
Also me: ya I’m definitely cloth diapering
I used disposable diapers with my first born. This time around I’m looking i I cloth diapers and this video was so helpful! Thanks Nikki 💕
Arm and hammer is my go to detergent they have a “free & clear” detergent specifically for sensitive skin. I think it’s a good middle ground between natural & like legit detergent. You might want to check it out!
Chelsea Boggs same! Clean and available most places! It’s a win, win!
I’ve tried the arm and hammer free and clear and it does not work nearly as well as seventh generation (regular version, we get lavender scent)
Cloth diapering was never something that I did for my daughters, but I think it’s great that some families do this. You do what is best for you and your family.
Hi there, I’m no where ready to have kids yet but this video was super informative. I have been watching your videos for years and I enjoy every one of them. Keep up the great content.
Cloth Diapers are such a goal for me, and its so nice to see people with a platform promoting them!
I've always wondered about cloth diapers but never really had any good information on how it actually works day to day. I'm currently not pregnant or planning to be any time soon, but I do love the idea of cloth diapers! :D I LOVE these types of videos because things that might seem 'common knowledge' to a lot of mums, are not to people who are planning on having a child but just want to educate themselves some more first :)
Your going to need both Alva baby inserts as he gets older and hemp is AMAZING for when he starts being more of a heavy wetter! We always used hemp at night along with a microfiber insert and it worked great!
I was amazed at how much easier cloth diapering was! I cloth diapered my son from about 2 weeks old til he potty trained at 18 months! I actually miss it a little now!
I’ve always debated over this, and had SO MUCH anxiety over the unknowns of cloth diapering.... but this video has helped so much, I’m sold!
I LOVE your enthusiasm! I literally just bought two sets of the Alva diapers and have been watching TONS of videos about them. Your video is my favorite! Absolutely love the comparison to the postpartum diaper. Oh my gosh! So true! Thank you for the encouragement! It was so needed because, at first, it can be so intimidating (especially if everyone in your family thinks you’re 😜 ). Happy New Year!
A trick for poo diapers when baby starts eating solids is to place a disposable (or fabric/ one reusable wipe) square inside the diaper.
My husband and I are talking about starting to try to have our first baby this year and you make me even more excited! Your enthusiasm about all things mom life is so contagious and I adore it! Sending your beautiful little family all the love 💕
Happy Birthday Nikki!! I hope you have a wonderful day and a wonderful year? 😊👍🌟🎂
I had already bought a bunch of Alvababy diapers. Im due in August so I'm so glad to hear that you are so happy with them. I am very excited as this is my first baby I will be cloth diapering.
I abesolutely LOVE cloth diapering.. It is so amazing! A lot of people in my family and inlaws family don't under stand it but it's great! So happy for you for finding this wonderful thing!
Jennifer Rae yes! All of our family is far from supportive 😂🤷🏽♀️
I love this!! It makes me happy to see people come to these environmentally-friendly choices for a whole host of reasons!! Even if the cost is close between the two, the environmental footprint of cloth diapers is so so so much smaller
So cool to see that cloth diapering has evolved so much over time. My mom used her "old school" cloth ones on us as kids in the 90s. Just square cloths held together by safety pins! Don't know how she did it. These new ones make me excited for starting a family! 🥰
My baby boy is 9 weeks old and I LOVE cloth nappies/diapers. I'm using a mix of muslins, prefolds and wraps, all in ones and pocket nappies. Pocket nappies are my favourite so far.
Anyone UK based and like the look of these Alva pocket nappies...I really recommend Little Lamb. They're good value, made in the UK and the quality is amazing.
I loved little lambs. Although I didn’t rate the covers. The elastic on the legs was very harsh as it’s a double gusset. I don’t think I tried their pocket nappies. Just the bamboo nappies with a cover. I preferred fleece or minky covers
I'm really glad you went through with making the video even though feeling embarrassed. This has been the most beneficial cloth diapering video I've watched and there's been many!
I worked full time outside the house and I was lucky enough to find a daycare that would use the cloth diapers. So I needed about 30 diapers to be able to make sure I had enough clean and dry every day to send to daycare. I used Alva Baby too though, and bought some of mine second hand. I only paid about $160 for all my diapers plus the pail and diaper sprayer and I never noticed a difference in water or power when I was cloth diapering. Cloth diapering for us was SUCH a money saver!
My finace is playing video games while I watch this video and about halfway through he goes, "I'm convinced!" So good!
Megan Shields Yesss 🙌🏻👏🏻
Cloth diapers are amazing! And you’re 100% right, they are SO much easier to use than you’d expect. There is a price range for everyone, “China cheapies” like Alva, Bumgenius, $30+ for Blueberry or Smartbottoms or $40+ for work at home mom diapers. You want good detergent because you’re washing the dirtiest laundry you’d ever wash - literal poop. As baby gets older you may find the microfiber inserts aren’t cutting it and you get leaks. Prefolds are an awesome and natural fiber to use! Hemp is also great for night time. Be careful ordering Bamboo/Charcoal Bamboo from amazon - be sure to check the fiber content. A lot of times it’s just a very thin layer of of bamboo terry and a microfiber core. We cloth diapers both babies and now I sew them for a business! They’re addicting!
I’m not having babies anytime soon but I couldn’t resist to watch. You’re so real and honest! I love it! Thank you so much ❤️
Great info! I've been cloth diapering for over 5 years for my 3 children and I learned a few new things from your video! Thanks for the content😘
I don’t know why videos about babies are so intriguing to me but this was super informative! When I do decide to start a fam, I think I’ll have to try this! I’ve always wondered about the environmental impact of disposables. Thanks for the video! Hopefully my future fam will be as adorable as yours
Hey Nikki! I’m not a mom but I used to nanny for a wonderful family of three kids and the two year old was wearing hybrid cloth diapers (I believe that’s what they’re called). The “inserts” were directly on the little one’s bottom and it was suuuper soft and comfortable. Plus it was easier to change because most of the time I only had to change the insert and not the whole diaper (unless there was leakage). I also found it easier to clean the poop off since again I was only cleaning the insert and not the whole diaper, which would’ve been very bulky and difficult to do in my opinion. Mind you she was two years old and was eating solids so her poops were completely different from a new born! Just thought I would share my experience. I love you and your wonderful family ❤️
Wow I’m not a mother nor am I even going to be pregnant anytime soon and i loved this video! But I watch all your baby related videos anyway lol mainly because I find everything so fascinating lol and it doesn’t hurt to start researching and becoming more knowledgeable for when that time does come. But I also watch because my only sister is expecting her first baby boy. So I very often share your baby videos with her. I hope she can give cloth diapers a try. At least for a few months. Thanks Nikki! 😊
As someone who cloth diapered for almost two years, the Alva Baby diapers held up the best. I never dried mine in the dryer at least not the shells and I always just used Tide detergent.
Did you cloth diaper since birth using the Alva Baby diapers? Or did you buy newborn cloth diapers?
I was stuffing my diapers earlier and I decided to sit here and watch videos I've been cloth diapering my 2 small ones for almost 2 years we love it wish I would of done it with my other 4 but currently pregnant and cloth diapering this one aswell I have some Alva baby ones and babygoal ones aswell as Essembly ones wich my husband dislikes those 😂
I'm looking to cloth diaper this 3rd time around. I really should have gone through with it with my second but its intimidating! This vid is very encouraging though, so I appreciate it.
Also, Jay’s Nest is amazing to go to here on TH-cam for all things cloth diapering!!
Carrie Rey second this! She’s the best!
Awww 🥺 that is so sweet💕 I appreciate you sharing the love
I’ve been cloth diapering 5 months, and we love it! She was 4 days old when we started. If you like dope prints I have several recommendations. I also have a heavy wetter so I’ve got absorbency down to a science lol
Love it. I also add a bamboo sheet liner in the cloth diaper to help with disposing of the pooh. Works like a charm and is organic.
I have a daughter I cloth diaper and tried to breastfeed as long as possible and that is why I subscribed to your channel and I just love how passionate you are. I think you are amazing and cant wait to watch move videos
I’m due with my little one end of November and I really want to cloth diaper! Thanks for sharing! I would love to see an update.
Cloth diapered all my babies..and plan to cloth diaper our foster babes ...😍
I love this video I’m so glad you decided to do it I’m pregnant and going to be a first time mom and was definitely nervous but I definitely feel better about taking on this task❤️
You have convinced me that i will only use cloth nappies (sorry diapers) when i have children! they are so cute too
I love this video!! I'm nowhere near ready to have kids, but I know when I do, I want to cloth diaper. This was so informative!
Currently pregnant with baby no.2 and I'm so excited to venture on this journey!
I've always wanted to be a mom that does cloth diapering and this convinces me to try it once I am one! Thank you :)
Yesss 🙌🏻👏🏻
Not a mom yet, but I found this super interesting and will try it if I become a mom! Thanks Nikki!
Yay.!! I can watch it now, thank you😊 hope you feel completely better🙏🏻
42 mins!! 😍 Watching with a snack, absorbing allllllll the info!!! We did Honest diapers with our first and switching to cloth with baby #2 due in October and I’m loving hearing your experience on this!!
So the diapers don’t stain? Because when my son has blowouts (he’s EBF), it tends to stain the clothes and I usually have to use a special baby stain remover and dry it in direct sunlight to get that yellow colour out. I’d like to cloth diaper, this is actually super encouraging ☺️
Coolbabymama nope. With a proper wash routine they do not stain.
Alva baby also has a newborn hack that can make the diapers tiny for infants !!! Just found your channel love your video! ❤️
This is so fascinating! I never really knew about cloth diapers until now- so glad to know this for the future. Thanks Nikki!
Hey Nikki! I don’t have a baby but I love watching your videos! Lol But seriously when I do have a baby, I’m definitely jumping on the cloth diaper band wagon! I used to babysit a baby girl that was on cloth diapers and she had a laundry canister specially for them. It was sealed tight and was easy to use!
Also sorry about your neck!
BEST. VIDEO. EVER! I’m 7 weeks & I’m so happy you made this! I want to use cloth diapers and was so overwhelmed with the concept. 😅
Thank you for doing this video! I’ve been so interested in learning about cloth diapers recently, so this was perfect timing! ❤️
Love this! Make cloth mainstream! I cloth diapered my three year old. And now I’m cloth diapering my twins. I had all three in diapers at one time it was fun!
Great info! I cloth diapered both of my daughters using the same diaper stash. One tip though - the reason most detergent isn’t good for cloth diapers is because it can cause a buildup that makes the inserts and covers repel liquid. So the pee just pours out the leg holes. We used powdered Tide (only a few tablespoons) which was recommended at the time. And girl - try a BumGenius. OMG.
This is so cute! Watching your mommy videos makes me so excited for this phase of my life in the future ❤️
Happy Birthday Nikki. I hope that your birthday today is special and the best you can have whilst indoors today.
I love how you are the person introducing me to such an eco friendly option!
Yes, definitely do not reuse the shell on pocket diapers. There are different kinds where you can use the shell but pockets aren’t one of them. Awesome video!!
I do not have kids, but I have been working in childcare for years. I have probably changed hundreds of diapers and I can't stand the waste of throwing them all away. Plus, they just gross me out. It's like soggy paper and there's no way it can be comfortable. I am so excited that you put out this video!
We've been using the Alva baby diapers for about 6 months as well and we have 24. We wash them every 2-3 days and we haven't noticed a significant difference in our water or electric bill. Like maybe $5 a month? Sooooo worth it. With disposables we can easily spend $60/month.
Great video. I would totally love one once he starts eating solid food.
As a former CD mom, I loved layering a bamboo insert under a microfiber insert for night time! I’ve cloth diapered two kiddos & this video brought back all the memories. Alva does sell bamboo inserts on their website!
Also- I used regular tide- & followed fluff love university wash instructions ❤️
You done did it Nikki.. you pushed me over the edge! 😂 thanks for sharing your experience! I’m excited to try this out and save some caaaash 💸💸
I was doing some research on cloth diapers for my sister but now I’m convinced myself based on this video
Yessss, I loved this! Thank you, Nikki! We are planning to use cloth diapers and this was so encouraging!
I don’t even have kids yet but I’ve always been interested in trying them, and you totally just sold me!
I've been on the fence about going the cloth diaper route, and this has really opened my eyes and I am so going to try these now! My little boy is due October 4th!!💕💕
Thanks for making this video, Nikki! I got one set of Alva Baby diapers and my baby hasn't been born yet, so not sure yet if I'll like them but this makes me hopeful! I've also seen other brands/non-pocket diapers that have different types of inserts that snap right inside of the covers so you can potentially reuse the covers more than once.
This video was very interesting because you took the fear of cloth diapers away. I'm highly considering them for my daughter. Anything that is a money saver sounds good to me and the family.
Angela Davis I’m so happy to hear that! It can definitely seem intimidating but surprisingly much easier than I expected!!
I have definitely starting cloth diapering and I love it. But I need more! And I need a better rhythm to clean them!
As always, great video. I don’t have kids but very good info. I would definitely consider using cloth diapers in the future.
Thank you soooo much for all this info! I'm so excited to try cloth diapering with my first ❤
Nothing to do with diapers, but your hair is amazing! Hope you and everyone stays healthy and safe during this. Oh and love your shirt!!!!
for the solid-poop state, ive read about the diaper liners. like setting a paper towel piece in the diaper
My mom always just flushed the diapers in the toilet while holding onto them and it worked great!
Great video nikki! If I have kids I want to try these now. Thank you for showing us your life and being transparent. I wish more people would be so honest and candid. 💓 you guys!
Also, "it's like wiping your butt with money" hahaha!!!! You're awesome.
Totally off topic of this video but I just want to ask if I’m the future you could do a full video diary update of your tower garden ? I just purchased one myself and would love to see an update of yours to give me some ideas of what to plant , etc!
Also love this video I don’t have babies YET but when I do I’m making the transition to low waste and was super intrigued by these so Thankyou for doing this video!
Love the video! Very informative. My perspective as an infant "teacher" AKA care taker in a Pennsylvania Daycare: If you plan to use cloth diapers while sending your child into a public childcare center, PLEASE don't forget to have a conversation with the teachers/caretakers of the room. Many preschools/daycares do not offer professional development/training when it comes to cloth diapers. It never hurts to make sure the teachers/caregivers are familiar with them. ALSO- check in with the teachers about the diapering situation as time goes on. I had a child in my care who we used cloth diapers with, and at first they were great! But over time it became quite a nuisance. Despite changing him every hour, trying different brands of diapers, etc. He was just constantly leaking out of them. We were having to change his clothing multiple times a day because of the diaper leakage. Thankfully, his mother was flexible and understood how it was becoming an issue. He also was quite a healthy, but wonderfully chunky baby, so his legs would get severe chaffing from the leg holes. Each baby is different, so this situation could be less common than other cloth diaper users. Hope this helps give some perspective from a teacher/caregiver point of view!
