Twin Fin Propulsion System Delivers Better Performance

  • Through prefabrication, it took just 45 days for Caterpillar to retrofit its new twin fin propulsion system to the Polarcus Naila, a seismic vessel. The innovative twin fin system, made for diesel electric propulsion systems, provides both the increased cargo capacity usually associated with thrusters and the reliability and safety associated with conventional propellers. Add to that higher thrust performance, and reduced fuel consumption and emissions, and you have a sustainable solution that was delivered with limited downtime.

I have watched the whole video and i am still waiting for an explanation about how this new system increase the performance. The only thing i saw is a big new fin that is supposed to increase the drag and give worse performance.

No explanation of the system. Really?

TL;DR The Twin Fin system replaces the 2 existing Azmouthpods with twin stern thrusters, and twin propellers. It keeps the same maneuverability that the pods give, but is much more cost effective and reliable. It also means you can perform almost all of the maintenance while still in the water.

I build repair and service Controllable pitch propeller systems. The benefit of this system is the compact design and ease of disassembly/assembly. If any component may need to be changed, it makes for easy change out. As far as performance goes, it probably isn't much better than any other system except for overall weight. Water borne bearings have to be changed more often with relatively low cost bearing material, it has to be machined though. With oil filled (EAL) vegetable oil filled stern tubes, the bearings are changed less and more run time without servicing. I'm an expert in this field. I have suggestions for this design and the only downfall of this design is draft, they hang pretty low.

Yah, but what is the twin fin system and how does it contrast and compare with what was OEM on the ship? So it's great but WTF is it?

Yeah a lot of waffle but very little information!

The OEM thrusters were higher maintenance which meant more frequent dry-docking. The Twin Fin developed by CAT and partners provides a more efficient propulsion option for this class of vessel.

I hope Caterpillar didn't pay the person who did this video. Seems like it was done by some marketing weenie that has no knowledge of the product or industry. It didn't even define what a 'twin fin' is.
After watching this video I know very little about the product. I feel so irritated at the video I am less inclined to seek out additional info about the product!

    Ok, here are some.
The original ship was build in 2010
This retrofit was done in beginning 2014

Twin fin is tougher. Engine in safer location. More hydrodynamic don’t have bulbous pod. If you know this already the video is nice

When I look above me I see the ceiling in my office--is that supposed to explain the Twin Fin? Reading down through the comments it would seem that I am not the only person needing an eye exam. Your post was just as useful as the video in explaining what the Twin Fin is. I did see another video that advertised itself as being about the Twin Fin, but it had been removed according to You Tube. Thanks for nothing though.
