  • In this 2 part video series, we make the cross head. The cross head is used to provide a pivot point for the connecting rod to articulate as it reciprocates back and forth. Later on we will make what is called the cross head GUIDE, which this will ride in.

The part turned out great, good machining.

4:00 No chatter with centre in place - perhaps spindle bearings need tightening a little ?
This discussion was had with Doubleboost and having adjusted bearings, reduced chatter quite a bit.

I think you should be using the end mill as it was designed and feed it in rather than across. Leave a few thou on to take a finishing cut across. The cutter is small with potential flexibility.

Looking good! what kind of cross head guide are you going for? Is it like the one with a track on the bottom, or one with slides on top and bottom, or something else? I don't really know all the guide options, i'm new to learning about steam engines.

Thanks! The guide will be a bore that the cross head will ride in. Similar to how the piston rides inside the engine cylinder. I did it this way because unlike most steam engines, I want this one to be completely enclosed. I also want the oil system to be closed. Namely, having the crank splash oil in all of the necessary locations. A closed cross head guide helps me do that. I will explain more about this in future videos.

Your close up shots are good, but a few wider view shots would be even better. Let us see more of your machines etc. Keep up the good work. How long do you anticipate this project to take?

I will keep that i mind for the next time I shoot video! I always just think people want to see the cutting action up close and personal.

Oh and, I think I got another year at LEAST! Definitely a long term project lol

They do if they're interested in what you're making.

Keep it up, I'll be watching, maybe a steam powered Atlas Lathe. :)
