The problem is that the English style of acting is in the veins of the English. Americans can’t replicate it as it’s not in theirs.
Oh dear no, sorry, , the rhythm is all wrong, the emphasis is on the actors “being funny” and “playing a part” instead of letting the script speak for itself. Look at the Sinden/Sheridan/Watford version and see how Coward should be played.

I love Kevin Kline, but I prefer Donald Sinden.
They should probably have done Peer Gynt instead .....

Painful when compared to the Donald Sinden version. And Kline's my FAVORITE American comedic actor. Ah, well.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched Donald Sinden in Present Laughter. The first time I saw it on stage was with Paul Schofield and Richard Briers as Roland Maule. I took my children, aged 13 and 12, and I thought my son was going to be sick, he laughed so much. Later I saw Donald Sinden - totally different and much more credible. I also absolutely adore Gwen Watford as Monica - unbeatable. I think I’m going to watch it again instead of spring cleaning the kitchen.
@@margueritejohnson6407 I'm avoiding washing my car to see it again, so we're definitely on the same page. And, yeah, Gwen 's brilliant in it, too! I'd LOVED to have seen Brier as Richard Maule, though!
Sublime Music Channel Tell me, do you think that was Gwen Watford’s own hair? From what we saw of her in the intro, I believe it was. I’d absolutely love to have hair like that, or at least her hairdresser! Richard Briers was very good - a bit like Julian Fellows but with more nervous laughter, I think. It was nearly 50 years ago! We were in the front row ( we always did this as the children were still quite short) and my son caught the eye of either Maurice or Henry who enjoyed Alex’s laughter so much he played a lot of Act 2 directly to Alex! I was taken to theatre in the West End regularly from about 9 or 10 years old and we did the same with ours. I loved watching them enjoying whatever we saw.

I saw Albert Finney in the lead at the Royal Exchange in Manchester. He was utterly riveting! Nobody could compare to that performance.
To be honest, if these clips are anything to go by, I much prefer Donald Sinden (the master of farce) and the 1981 London cast.
Why is it that anything Americans try to copy is always overdone. Wouldn't it be easier to have a Completely British cast to play this. after all, mericn actors are often seen on the English Stage.
I saw this production on Broadway and left at intermission. The entire thing felt dead, frozen in aspic. Great actors very funny text but it felt like a museum piece. Search for the Donald Sniden version. looking forward to seeing Andrew Scott's on NTLive.

Andrew Scott's was not as good as Donald Sinden version..
Scott's too much shouting..lacking style,dumbed down..
Donald Sinden’s performance was superb. It’s on TH-cam & should be seen.
I've just watched the Donald Sinden version here on TH-cam twice. It is sublime, hilarious, almost perfectly played. Do watch it! Also, having just read Noel Coward's diaries, he is gently lampooning himself. This is his life-style, his milieu, though some of the genders have been flipped, to preserve English sensibilities back in the early 40s. 😉
Sinden was great!
The English accents are very wobbly.
I guess it’s good that I didn’t see the one before because I thought this was wonderful
