You two & and your whole family are true stewards of the land. I truly admire how your children are learning this from the ground up. No pun intended. Lol Thank you for showing others how they could do it for themselves. It’s a really good example for our future here on earth. 🙏
Sela, if you use a tarp laid out flat on the ground you can rake a good bunch of leaves up onto it real quick, then grab two corners and pull it to where you wanna dump them. No bending over and over. It's lots faster and easier. Give it a try . The tarp just floats over the ground. Just don't pull too fast . I'm old and can't do all that bending stuff. Try it. I bet you'll like it better
@@private15 i know that i bowled right up to day before one child and went to dance clubs (no booze) until they wouldnt let me in cuz they were afraid i would go into labour lol

Chewbacca is my favorite Star Wars character!!! Thanks for another wonderful video. You're one of my favorite families on TH-cam. I wish you all could post more videos. I enjoy your adventures. Please continue to be safe and be blessed 💕💞💕
🤣🤣🤣 LOVED THE INTRO! 👏👏👏 cracked me up! Ain’t nothing like good compost! After resting the garden and this sitting over winter. I can’t wait to see your garden next year! It’s going to be HUGE, GINORMOUSLY AWESOME! 🤣👍 (Mike you should also warn people about Grazon. When buying straw, hay and using manure. People should know where they are getting their resources. And know about the herbicide and how it WILL, not maybe, kill the garden). I’ve seen some aweful disasters!)
Mike I have found the best way to do leaves is with a bagging mower. It chops them up so they break down faster. If you do not have one I think you have a chipper that will also do it.
Looks like those figs are about ready to harvest. When are those new cute little cattle you showed us a couple of videos back due to arrive on the homestead?
I have two compost rings made from wire. I live in an urban area of northern VA so I don't have much room. For these 2 rings I make leaf mold using a cold method and harvest it after more than a year.
The darkside of compost! Those baby African goslings sure got big! I like the first Star Wars Movie the most, "A New Hope". I think it was Chapter 4. It's great that you know how to do this method of making compost. Those turkeys look mighty delicious! Are you eating Mr. Tom for Thanksgiving? Nice job Selah getting all those leaves to put into the compost! Thanks for this Dickson family!
I bought my current home in suburbia 10 years ago and one of the first things I wanted to do was to start working on garden beds so I ordered a truckload of compost from the largest distributor in our area. I used the logic that they wouldn't have become the biggest if they weren't any good. Turned out to be killer compost and killed off the seedlings I planted in the first 3 beds in no time as well as the one established flower bed I had added it to. Before using the rest of it I tried replanting on my original beds. Then it was just a matter of using it in areas I wanted to suppress weeds. Those first 3 beds laid barren for the next 3-4 years without a single weed popping up. After that I tried growing grass on those beds. Some had grown but even after 10 years you can still tell where those beds were by the patchiness. Looking forward to starting my own "chicken worked" compost at my retirement farm.
One word: GRAZON. Have to be careful with straw and manure! It WILL kill your gardens for years! (It’s a herbicide). Horrible. The animals eat the hay, and it goes into the manure. Everyone has to BE SURE they know where they are getting this stuff if they are going to use it! And ASK and be sure. There are plenty of vids to on it on youtube. If you don’t know about it. Look up, “is your compost killing your garden?” That’s why, unfortunately, I quit using straw and manure. Another reason I don’t use free compost you can get from the city. If lawn treated debris is in the piles. Again it will leach into the compost. I only use my own clippings, leaves etc. From my own home and neighbors who I KNOW aren’t using weed and feed or herbicdes on the grass. I use the same methos Mike is showing. It’s black gold.
WOW What a fun way to start off with Darth Vader like that. LOL I loved all of the Star Ward movies. It is really hard to pick 1 of them as my FAVORITE MOVE. I also love the Ewalks movie to. They all where great.
I have three composters. I like the one like yours best. I’m in the city. Thanks to Mike, I will lift the composter off the pile, place it next to the pile & shovel the pile in it , “turning the soil”. Yeah! Will have compost sooner. After Ian hit us sure had enough to fill all 3 of my composters! I think you will like that composter very much. Sure beats my other 2 that have a door on the bottom to take out compost or very hard on an old lady to take from the bottom and put it on the top to turn it. What a job!
Although everyone in my family LOVES Star Wars (kids. Brother, Husband) I've never been a huge fan. In fact, when our parents took us to see The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, I thought it was a baseball movie LOL However, I am a huge fan of compost and The Fit Farmer❤️
Leslie, I just saw you on pantry talk and you were wonderful. Great hearing about you 2 ladies pregnancy and how y'all are coming along well. Pray for you and yours. Big AMEN!!!
That's alot of good info. I have a slow pile, I just add as we mow and clean coops and don't turn. After a few months or so it's nice underneath. Turning isn't as complicated as I thought. I had watched a video that made it seem way more complex. Thank you guys! Such an encouragement.
Hey when are you putting up the other yurt?I’m sure the kids would love their own space plus I think you would like more room to just move around. Just anxious to see one built.
I agree great Vader voice ! I mix in grass clippings with the brown for compost. When you don’t have grass ask a local neighbor or lawn guy if you can get the grass clippings! Carry a big glad bag he can dump them into! 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱😊
Mike- at our place we use a leaf blower with bag to suck up leaves and that crushes them in to bit then we empty it on to my garden and flower meds for the winter. The worms love it and it’s a mulch to protect the soil.
Oh yeah, I definitely do my stretches until I can dance without hurting lol. My little cousin had to have surgery on that tendon under his arm, he tore it. And he is an ex pro rugby player. So I reach up and over with the flat of my hand on the back of my neck, fingers pointing down, stretch to reach between shoulder blades. It was so tight! Much better now. Nice compost! I’m composting directly on my spring garden. Super charging it with compost tea and all kinds of stuff. Not turning it, just letting it cook down and cool on its own. I’ve been trying to get it 2’ deep but it keeps shrinking lol. Still waiting for my first real frost…okra still growing out there and my last yellow squash had a flower this morning lol. I wish I had some of your coop poop!
I loved the 1st 3 original 1st 3 I didn't really care for the new 1st 3 but the last 3 was fantastic and I think the final episode did an amazing job of closure for an incredible series. I really love them all except the 1st 3 but 789 were fabulous and I think 9 was just cherry on top

painters cloth does better. i use it moving small twigs
Exactly what we do. Soooooo much faster and easier.
@@tsaligrass I'd think that wouldn't pull as smoothly?
It's easier on my body to use a blower to get my leaves in a central area, then rake onto the tarp.
I use a bed sheet😊
Are you looking to become entertainer of the Year? What a wonderful way to do a program on composting.
Lacey has to be in the house looking out the window laughing so hard as she watches you and your antics. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
