  • Zapdos has returned to legendary raid at the beginning of Season of Shared Skies.
Zapdos is a Electric/Flying type Pokemon, which is weak to only Rock and Ice type moves. It has 158 defense, as a raid boss, which is slightly below average in the tier. As a raid boss, it learns Charge Beam as fast move and Drill Peck/Ancient Power/Zap Cannon/Thunder/Thunderbolt as charged moves.
While Zapdos is not a defensive raid boss, it is not easy to be defeated as Duo Raid, because of its low weakness count. Specifically, Shadow Rhyperior, Shadow Rampardos, Shadow Mamoswine, Shadow Tyranitar, Rampardos, Rhyperior, Shadow Mewtwo, Baxcalibur, Shadow Weavile, Mamoswine, Tyrantrum, Shadow Regigigas, Shadow Terrakion, Shadow Golem, Shadow Alolan-Golem, Shadow Aggron, Shadow Aerodactyl can all defeat Zapdos as Duo Raid without weather boost under best friend bonus.
For Mega Evolution, Mega Diancie, Mega Tyranitar, Mega Aerodactyl, Mega Glalie, Mega Rayquaza and Mega Abomasnow can all defeat Zapdos under the same setting by themselves.
Mega Rayquaza is once again an effective counter against the legendary raid boss in rotation, surprising no one. Conveniently, Mega Rayquaza also boost catch candy XL while catching Zapdos.
Since Dragon Ascent is resisted by Zapdos, Mega Rayquaza would use its Dragon-type moveset instead. With Mega Rayquaza's decent defense stats and high DPS, it again does not have any preference on Zapdos moveset.
Mega Rayquaza is challenging Charge Beam/Thunderbolt Zapdos under Rainy weather this time, in which Zapdos has an advantage over Mega Rayquaza by utilizing Weather Boost Damage Bonus. As stated above, Mega Rayquaza has a comfortable margin in both DPS and TDO, as long as it would dodge the charged move, which is the problem in this raid.
Thunderbolt has a fairly slow 1.8s damage window, such that it is usually easy to dodge. However, Mega Rayquaza charged move - Outrage, has a long 3.9s cooldown. Unfortunately, there is no safe timing where Mega Rayquaza can use Outrage without getting hit by Thunderbolt in cooldown. The best Mega Rayquaza can do is to try using Outrage right after dodging a Thunderbolt in order to maximize the change it can dodge the upcoming charged move.
    Pokemon used:
    CP 6535 Mega Rayquaza - Lv50+1 15/15/15 Dragon Tail/Outrage
    CP 6535 Mega Rayquaza - Lv50+1 15/15/15 Dragon Tail/Outrage
