Thanks very much for watching! Please let me know in the comments what you think; and also what kind of breaks work for you and how you found out. Any other thoughts on this important topic are highly welcome as well!!
Very valuable thoughts that you are sharing. I wish academic culture will incorporate more of these insights and take a step back from the hustle culture.
Thank you so much for speaking out about this vital topic! Over in Sweden at SciLifeLab we have a grassroots movement for mental health in science, the Coaching in Science Initiative (CSI). It was formed by PostDocs and PhD students and we hope to bring more of this thinking into the academic culture in the future. It is very encouraging for us to see more senior faculty speaking on the topic; many thanks to you!
Thank you for the great video! I also get very anxious if I take a long vacation..the mini-vacations are better for me. I wanted to add that having something (other than work) to look forward to in the weekend - pursuing a hobby or any fun activity can possibly help.
Dear Prof., You have served as my offline mentor throughout my academic journey. Although we have never met in person, the influence of your content has profoundly impacted my PhD pursuit. Your insights have guided me on various personal issues related to my research. Today, when I was registering at a university in Potsdam (offline), I was supposed to provide information for a mentor. This led me to reflect on the guidance I have received virtually from you. I am considering listing you as my mentor, as your guidance has been invaluable to me. I opted not to contact you via email, as I have come to know you primarily through your TH-cam channel and, before that, publications. I would appreciate it if you agreed to it. More importantly, I hope it won't be considered offensive to reach you in this public domain. Thank you. Best regards, Jaffer
Thanks so much, that is great for me to hear. I am afraid I am too busy to mentor people elsewhere, since I already have a very large lab group. This is why I do this YT channel. Best of luck to you in Potsdam! Perhaps we will bump into each other.

great point! Taking breaks is very essential. I would say many phd feel shame to have breaks. Thank you for pointing out.
thanks!!
Perfect timing. I badly needed such a motivational video in between the transition period of my Ph.D. and postdoc. Thank you, professor.
Thanks! Glad you found it useful!

Thanks! Yes, I absolutely agree.
Recommend Cal Newport's new book "Slow Productivity" for a long form on this topic, with practical strategies.
Thanks for the book tip!

@mrillig thank you. I can totally understand. It still means a lot.
I strongly recommend napping. Napping is awesome.
I napped all the way through high school, but then dropped it. Probably a mistake. Looking forward to that couch.... :)
My university will kick me out if I take a day off in the middle of the week 🤣.
That's too bad! But there are still other options for taking breaks.
I realize not everything I mentioned is an option for everybody. :)
