  • The U.S. Border Patrol Tactical Unit - BORTAC - was originally formed in 1984 to assist with the riots happening inside detention centers operated by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Now, they travel the length of America's borders, catching criminals, busting smuggling rings, and even responding to threats like the Uvalde Elementary shooting. How far does their jurisdiction go? Just ask Jammer.

    Great interview... but, this didn't do them justice. I worked a lot with BORTAC also known as "Zulu's" as the National response units vs Sector response teams. I worked along the SW border from 2009 - 2018 as a contracted ISR special mission air support asset.. I would often "clear and talk these guys on" to targets, objectives, such as DTO smuggling groups, scouts, rip crews, etc. I can and will tell you that these guys (BORTAC'ers) are the High Speed/Low Drag team guys within all of CBP/USBP hands down. BORTAC'ers are the silent professionals of CBP, and they provide support to a multitude of other National events to include Presidential Protection Detail, Dignitary protection, politician protection, Super Bowl Security, etc... many if not most of the BORTAC guys are former Army Rangers, Marines, (MARSOC), Navy (NSW), USAF (JTAC's and TAC P's), that get out of elite Military units, join CBP, and become BORTAC agents.. For anyone that may be living under a rock, USBP BORTAC agent Brian Terry was KIA on 15 Dec 2010 by a cartel Rip Crew in the mountains of Nogales.. I flew 10.5 hrs that night working with Brian Terry's BORTAC team/buddy's trying to capture all 5 individuals involved. Four (4) of the individuals was captured; however one (1) of the individuals absconded and got away. Point being, Brian Terry was a USBP BORTAC Agent that gave his life protecting his Country, which there is no greater honor or sacrifice.. these guys "hang it out" every night/day they go out on a mission, and they are the tier 1 Unit within DHS/CBP/USBP hands down.
    With respect to the individual below that said "tier 1 civilian units are not the same as a tier 1 MIL unit... you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground. Many BORTAC'rs are prior tier 1 team guys when they join CBP/USBP and become BORTAC agents.. in addition, they train "with" tier 1 MIL units routinely, as well as OCONUS tier 1 units around the world. Make no mistake, these guys have been involved in National News events and absolutely got no credit or recognition for their involvement or actions. They don't write books, make movies, and go on podcasts about many of the world and national events they have directly been involved in. BORTAC/Zulu's are one of the best kept secrets with US Federal Agency reaction units.
    They also routinely deploy OCONUS to active combat zones and provide training, tactics, procedures to US and foreign MIL units. They fight along side by side with some of the best tier 1 units on the planet... anyone that says or thinks these guys do not parallel a MIL tier 1 unit is an idiot and moron. That's the equivalent of saying the FBI HRT unit is not equivalent to MIL tier 1 units, when most (if not all) of HRT stems from prior MIL tier 1 units.. same with BORTAC.
    I love these guys, I've personally first hand seen what they are capable of; and, I've first hand seen BORTAC guys such as Brian Terry give his life and pay the ultimate sacrifice fulfilling the job of a BORTAc team guy.
    These guys are the elite of the elite within DHS/CBP/USBP... and they serve along side other Federal Agency tier 1 units to include FBI HRT guys...
    BORTAC units are among the top elite units within the US Federal Agency arsenal.. and make no mistake when I say... these guys are deadly effective at their job.
    Many of the BORTAC guys (2009 - 2019) should remember me talking them on to groups, scouts, rip crews, and various other HVT objectives... I was their eye in the sky.

      Bortac rarely deploys alongside T1 units like delta, devgru, 724th, rrc etc. they hardly fight alongside units outside of the US. Have they in the past yes but it’s not frequent. Bortac also isn’t really the best kept secret in the federal law enforcement space not even close, last thing in terms of national news that’s just bs.

    Oh good ‘ol BORTAC.
    So in RGV BORTAC would assist in areas in the sector that had more drug/human trafficking than regular line agents could handle. They also did high risk ops where the smugglers were likely going to be armed.
    For a while they were the go-to tactical team for state/local LE to call to assist their SWAT teams.
    The national BORTAC team is where it gets really high speed, and some of those guys are in other countries as “advisors” to teach foreign LE/MIL how to do tracking and border ops.
    Those guys you saw in multi-cam stopping rioters from burning down federal buildings in 2020? A lot of those were BORTAC.
    And it’s mentioned but they provide a lot of support for other federal agencies that need doors kicked.

      What does it take for regional BORTAC guys to get selected to the national team? Also how different is their funding/mission statement?
      Aren’t they more like USMS SOG rather than Delta or HRT?

    • @rashiro
      @rashiro ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Jackson-gv9xw I’ll answer it like this and caveat, my knowledge is from about seven years ago.
      If you want to be BORTAC you have to join USBP, and do two years post academy in the field. You’re then eligible for selection to BORTAC. Sectors run mentoring programs which have a mini-selection and help get you prepared to pass regional selection. You also work with the team guys you’ll be joining later, so they know if you’re a piece of shit or solid dude. Pieces of shit will be removed.
      Selection for BORTAC changed when I was in USPB to be two parts, with the initial “kick the shit out of you” portion being a couple weeks. That happens in El Paso. Complete everything and you’re probationary on BORTAC.
      You come back to your sector and start a lot of training for a specialty. After that it’s at least once a month you’re traveling for training between doing the job.
      Do regional BORTAC and you can try out for the national team. Keep in mind there’s some SERIOUS fucking dudes there. Like green beret, seals, etc who have been down range and done the things we all gawk at. Dudes like that are on regional teams too, but National pulls the elite from the elite.
      Besides getting to do the coolest parts of USBP work without many of the shit parts (BORTAC dudes ain’t getting stuck doing processing) you also get a tons of points toward promoting should you want to go up the ranks in USBP.
      It’s hard to get an exact comparison to BORTAC because they do so much, and they’re one of the only fedboi teams that operate daily in the environments they do. But they’re on par with big metro full-time SWAT like Vegas/LA, and the National dudes are a level above.
      EDIT: I wanted to be BORSTAR which is the tac med dudes, but I transferred agencies. TAC and STAR were at the same facility and had similar recruitment, I had a half dozen buddies that did the TAC route I got to speak to.

    • @Jackson-gv9xw
      @Jackson-gv9xw ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rashiro thanks for the response. What does the selection process look like for the national team? How hard is it essentially? Also how much better is the training?
      Also how different is their mission statement? Are they mostly going after overseas guys while the regional teams focus on local problems?

      FYI, it was a BORTAC guy who smoked the mass shooter at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX a year and a half ago. If you didn't know, that whole incident was a goat-fuck right up until BORTAC breached the classroom and terminally ended the crisis by putting that piece of shit 6 feet under. I highly recommend you see the analysis and critiques by a former SWAT cop ( www.youtube.com/@DonutOperator ) as well as an Army Special Forces CIF operator ( www.youtube.com/@fieldcraftsurvival ) to get the full picture from a tactical and strategic perspective. Donut Operator's videos are here ( th-cam.com/video/wVBtVFVs8gQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zMy_ZKTegAnPD5k- ) and here ( th-cam.com/users/liveVwqfRpU_91A?si=em5lV_ChcXMGAyac ), and Mike Glover's , AKA Fieldcraft Survival, are here ( th-cam.com/video/u_f6lvwVyfE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=B_jjFd_iFV_gW1sx ) and here ( th-cam.com/video/xrCMWXfvAzU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tplDP7fdUdU_3dq- ).
      TL;DR: in a mass shooting situation, first responders should immediately move to and neutralize the threat. Period. Do not make the same shameful mistakes that were made in Uvalde and delay or stall in your speed, surprise, and violence of action. Immediate, overwhelming force absolutely must be used to the fullest extent possible without further endangering the public in order to prevent further loss of life. I'm embarrassed that many of the cowards that day share my home state and call themselves law enforcement professionals, TBH. Sorry for the soapbox rant, but that situation was like Texas' own 9/11, and it makes my blood boil. Thank God for the brave people of BORTAC! (And all our other brave, upstanding, and professional law enforcement and military personnel.)

      You realize a good number of the guys on the civilian side are former Tier 2, sometimes Tier 1 units (less because.mil Tier 1 guys are generally career .mil) right? Depending on how you are making your point - if you are being a condescending ass than I’d tell you I’ve been with both and there are some civilian teams that are quite equal and even have more real world exposure than some other .mil teams and units.. if you are just stating a point based on mission, then yes, you are 100% correct in that the mission, TTP’s, priority of life and equipment/ support is very much different.
